¹Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.

¹La troisième année d'Osée, fils d'Ela, roi d'Israël, Ezéchias, fils d'Achaz, roi de Juda, régna.

¹ויהי בשנת שלש להושע בן אלה מלך ישראל מלך חזקיה בן אחז מלך יהודה׃

²Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Abi the daughter of Zechariah.

²Il avait vingt-cinq ans lorsqu'il devint roi, et il régna vingt-neuf ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s'appelait Abi, fille de Zacharie.

²בן עשרים וחמש שנה היה במלכו ועשרים ותשע שנה מלך בירושלם ושם אמו אבי בת זכריה׃

³And he did that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah, according to all that David his father had done.

³Il fit ce qui est droit aux yeux de l'Eternel, entièrement comme avait fait David, son père.

³ויעש הישר בעיני יהוה ככל אשר עשה דוד אביו׃

⁴He removed the high places, and brake the pillars, and cut down the Asherah: and he brake in pieces the brazen serpent that Moses had made; for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it; and he called it Nehushtan.

⁴Il fit disparaître les hauts lieux, brisa les statues, abattit les idoles, et mit en pièces le serpent d'airain que Moïse avait fait, car les enfants d'Israël avaient jusqu'alors brûlé des parfums devant lui: on l'appelait Nehuschtan.

⁴הוא הסיר את הבמות ושבר את המצבת וכרת את האשרה וכתת נחש הנחשת אשר עשה משה כי עד הימים ההמה היו בני ישראל מקטרים לו ויקרא לו נחשתן׃

⁵He trusted in Jehovah, the God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor [among them] that were before him.

⁵Il mit sa confiance en l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël; et parmi tous les rois de Juda qui vinrent après lui ou qui le précédèrent, il n'y en eut point de semblable à lui.

⁵ביהוה אלהי ישראל בטח ואחריו לא היה כמהו בכל מלכי יהודה ואשר היו לפניו׃

⁶For he clave to Jehovah; he departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which Jehovah commanded Moses.

⁶Il fut attaché à l'Eternel, il ne se détourna point de lui, et il observa les commandements que l'Eternel avait prescrits à Moïse.

⁶וידבק ביהוה לא סר מאחריו וישמר מצותיו אשר צוה יהוה את משה׃

⁷And Jehovah was with him; whithersoever he went forth he prospered: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.

⁷Et l'Eternel fut avec Ezéchias, qui réussit dans toutes ses entreprises. Il se révolta contre le roi d'Assyrie, et ne lui fut plus assujetti.

⁷והיה יהוה עמו בכל אשר יצא ישכיל וימרד במלך אשור ולא עבדו׃

⁸He smote the Philistines unto Gaza and the borders thereof, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city.

⁸Il battit les Philistins jusqu'à Gaza, et ravagea leur territoire depuis les tours des gardes jusqu'aux villes fortes.

⁸הוא הכה את פלשתים עד עזה ואת גבוליה ממגדל נוצרים עד עיר מבצר׃

⁹And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it.

⁹La quatrième année du roi Ezéchias, qui était la septième année d'Osée, fils d'Ela, roi d'Israël, Salmanasar, roi d'Assyrie, monta contre Samarie et l'assiégea.

⁹ויהי בשנה הרביעית למלך חזקיהו היא השנה השביעית להושע בן אלה מלך ישראל עלה שלמנאסר מלך אשור על שמרון ויצר עליה׃

¹⁰And at the end of three years they took it: in the sixth year of Hezekiah, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken.

¹⁰Il la prit au bout de trois ans, la sixième année d'Ezéchias, qui était la neuvième année d'Osée, roi d'Israël: alors Samarie fut prise.

¹⁰וילכדה מקצה שלש שנים בשנת שש לחזקיה היא שנת תשע להושע מלך ישראל נלכדה שמרון׃

¹¹And the king of Assyria carried Israel away unto Assyria, and put them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes,

¹¹Le roi d'Assyrie emmena Israël captif en Assyrie, et il les établit à Chalach, et sur le Chabor, fleuve de Gozan, et dans les villes des Mèdes,

¹¹ויגל מלך אשור את ישראל אשורה וינחם בחלח ובחבור נהר גוזן וערי מדי׃

¹²because they obeyed not the voice of Jehovah their God, but transgressed his covenant, even all that Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded, and would not hear it, nor do it.

¹²parce qu'ils n'avaient point écouté la voix de l'Eternel, leur Dieu, et qu'ils avaient transgressé son alliance, parce qu'ils n'avaient ni écouté ni mis en pratique tout ce qu'avait ordonné Moïse, serviteur de l'Eternel.

¹²על אשר לא שמעו בקול יהוה אלהיהם ויעברו את בריתו את כל אשר צוה משה עבד יהוה ולא שמעו ולא עשו׃

¹³Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah did Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fortified cities of Judah, and took them.

¹³La quatorzième année du roi Ezéchias, Sanchérib, roi d'Assyrie, monta contre toutes les villes fortes de Juda, et s'en empara.

¹³ובארבע עשרה שנה למלך חזקיה עלה סנחריב מלך אשור על כל ערי יהודה הבצרות ויתפשם׃

¹⁴And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.

¹⁴Ezéchias, roi de Juda, envoya dire au roi d'Assyrie à Lakis: J'ai commis une faute! Eloigne-toi de moi. Ce que tu m'imposeras, je le supporterai. Et le roi d'Assyrie imposa à Ezéchias, roi de Juda, trois cents talents d'argent et trente talents d'or.

¹⁴וישלח חזקיה מלך יהודה אל מלך אשור לכישה לאמר חטאתי שוב מעלי את אשר תתן עלי אשא וישם מלך אשור על חזקיה מלך יהודה שלש מאות ככר כסף ושלשים ככר זהב׃

¹⁵And Hezekiah gave [him] all the silver that was found in the house of Jehovah, and in the treasures of the king's house.

¹⁵Ezéchias donna tout l'argent qui se trouvait dans la maison de l'Eternel et dans les trésors de la maison du roi.

¹⁵ויתן חזקיה את כל הכסף הנמצא בית יהוה ובאצרות בית המלך׃

¹⁶At that time did Hezekiah cut off [the gold from] the doors of the temple of Jehovah, and [from] the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.

¹⁶Ce fut alors qu'Ezéchias, roi de Juda, enleva, pour les livrer au roi d'Assyrie, les lames d'or dont il avait couvert les portes et les linteaux du temple de l'Eternel.

¹⁶בעת ההיא קצץ חזקיה את דלתות היכל יהוה ואת האמנות אשר צפה חזקיה מלך יהודה ויתנם למלך אשור׃

¹⁷And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rab-saris and Rabshakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great army unto Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller's field.

¹⁷Le roi d'Assyrie envoya de Lakis à Jérusalem, vers le roi Ezéchias, Tharthan, Rab-Saris et Rabschaké avec une puissante armée. Ils montèrent, et ils arrivèrent à Jérusalem. Lorsqu'ils furent montés et arrivés, ils s'arrêtèrent à l'aqueduc de l'étang supérieur, sur le chemin du champ du foulon.

¹⁷וישלח מלך אשור את תרתן ואת רב סריס ואת רב שקה מן לכיש אל המלך חזקיהו בחיל כבד ירושלם ויעלו ויבאו ירושלם ויעלו ויבאו ויעמדו בתעלת הברכה העליונה אשר במסלת שדה כובס׃

¹⁸And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebnah the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.

¹⁸Ils appelèrent le roi; et Eliakim, fils de Hilkija, chef de la maison du roi, se rendit auprès d'eux, avec Schebna, le secrétaire, et Joach, fils d'Asaph, l'archiviste.

¹⁸ויקראו אל המלך ויצא אלהם אליקים בן חלקיהו אשר על הבית ושבנה הספר ויואח בן אסף המזכיר׃

¹⁹And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?

¹⁹Rabschaké leur dit: Dites à Ezéchias: Ainsi parle le grand roi, le roi d'Assyrie: Quelle est cette confiance, sur laquelle tu t'appuies?

¹⁹ויאמר אלהם רב שקה אמרו נא אל חזקיהו כה אמר המלך הגדול מלך אשור מה הבטחון הזה אשר בטחת׃

²⁰Thou sayest (but they are but vain words), [There is] counsel and strength for the war. Now on whom dost thou trust, that thou hast rebelled against me?

²⁰Tu as dit: Il faut pour la guerre de la prudence et de la force. Mais ce ne sont que des paroles en l'air. En qui donc as-tu placé ta confiance, pour t'être révolté contre moi?

²⁰אמרת אך דבר שפתים עצה וגבורה למלחמה עתה על מי בטחת כי מרדת בי׃

²¹Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him.

²¹Voici, tu l'as placée dans l'Egypte, tu as pris pour soutien ce roseau cassé, qui pénètre et perce la main de quiconque s'appuie dessus: tel est Pharaon, roi d'Egypte, pour tous ceux qui se confient en lui.

²¹עתה הנה בטחת לך על משענת הקנה הרצוץ הזה על מצרים אשר יסמך איש עליו ובא בכפו ונקבה כן פרעה מלך מצרים לכל הבטחים עליו׃

²²But if ye say unto me, We trust in Jehovah our God; is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?

²²Peut-être me direz-vous: C'est en l'Eternel, notre Dieu, que nous nous confions. Mais n'est-ce pas lui dont Ezéchias a fait disparaître les hauts lieux et les autels, en disant à Juda et à Jérusalem: Vous vous prosternerez devant cet autel à Jérusalem?

²²וכי תאמרון אלי אל יהוה אלהינו בטחנו הלוא הוא אשר הסיר חזקיהו את במתיו ואת מזבחתיו ויאמר ליהודה ולירושלם לפני המזבח הזה תשתחוו בירושלם׃

²³Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.

²³Maintenant, fais une convention avec mon maître, le roi d'Assyrie, et je te donnerai deux mille chevaux, si tu peux fournir des cavaliers pour les monter.

²³ועתה התערב נא את אדני את מלך אשור ואתנה לך אלפים סוסים אם תוכל לתת לך רכבים עליהם׃

²⁴How then canst thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

²⁴Comment repousserais-tu un seul chef d'entre les moindres serviteurs de mon maître? Tu mets ta confiance dans l'Egypte pour les chars et pour les cavaliers.

²⁴ואיך תשיב את פני פחת אחד עבדי אדני הקטנים ותבטח לך על מצרים לרכב ולפרשים׃

²⁵Am I now come up without Jehovah against this place to destroy it? Jehovah said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.

²⁵D'ailleurs, est-ce sans la volonté de l'Eternel que je suis monté contre ce lieu, pour le détruire? L'Eternel m'a dit: Monte contre ce pays, et détruis-le.

²⁵עתה המבלעדי יהוה עליתי על המקום הזה להשחתו יהוה אמר אלי עלה על הארץ הזאת והשחיתה׃

²⁶Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebnah, and Joah, unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not with us in the Jews' language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.

²⁶Eliakim, fils de Hilkija, Schebna et Joach, dirent à Rabschaké: Parle à tes serviteurs en araméen, car nous le comprenons; et ne nous parle pas en langue judaïque, aux oreilles du peuple qui est sur la muraille.

²⁶ויאמר אליקים בן חלקיהו ושבנה ויואח אל רב שקה דבר נא אל עבדיך ארמית כי שמעים אנחנו ואל תדבר עמנו יהודית באזני העם אשר על החמה׃

²⁷But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? [hath he] not [sent me] to the men that sit on the wall, to eat their own dung, and to drink their own water with you?

²⁷Rabschaké leur répondit: Est-ce à ton maître et à toi que mon maître m'a envoyé dire ces paroles? N'est-ce pas à ces hommes assis sur la muraille pour manger leurs excréments et pour boire leur urine avec vous?

²⁷ויאמר אליהם רב שקה העל אדניך ואליך שלחני אדני לדבר את הדברים האלה הלא על האנשים הישבים על החמה לאכל את חריהם ולשתות את שיניהם עמכם׃

²⁸Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and spake, saying, Hear ye the word of the great king, the king of Assyria.

²⁸Alors Rabschaké, s'étant avancé, cria à haute voix en langue judaïque, et dit: Ecoutez la parole du grand roi, du roi d'Assyrie!

²⁸ויעמד רב שקה ויקרא בקול גדול יהודית וידבר ויאמר שמעו דבר המלך הגדול מלך אשור׃

²⁹Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you out of his hand:

²⁹Ainsi parle le roi: Qu'Ezéchias ne vous abuse point, car il ne pourra vous délivrer de ma main.

²⁹כה אמר המלך אל ישיא לכם חזקיהו כי לא יוכל להציל אתכם מידו׃

³⁰neither let Hezekiah make you trust in Jehovah, saying, Jehovah will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

³⁰Qu'Ezéchias ne vous amène point à vous confier en l'Eternel, en disant: L'Eternel nous délivrera, et cette ville ne sera pas livrée entre les mains du roi d'Assyrie.

³⁰ואל יבטח אתכם חזקיהו אל יהוה לאמר הצל יצילנו יהוה ולא תנתן את העיר הזאת ביד מלך אשור׃

³¹Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig-tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;

³¹N'écoutez point Ezéchias; car ainsi parle le roi d'Assyrie: Faites la paix avec moi, rendez-vous à moi, et chacun de vous mangera de sa vigne et de son figuier, et chacun boira de l'eau de sa citerne,

³¹אל תשמעו אל חזקיהו כי כה אמר מלך אשור עשו אתי ברכה וצאו אלי ואכלו איש גפנו ואיש תאנתו ושתו איש מי בורו׃

³²Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive-trees and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, Jehovah will deliver us.

³²jusqu'à ce que je vienne, et que je vous emmène dans un pays comme le vôtre, dans un pays de blé et de vin, un pays de pain et de vignes, un pays d'oliviers à huile et de miel, et vous vivrez et vous ne mourrez point. N'écoutez donc point Ezéchias; car il pourrait vous séduire en disant: L'Eternel nous délivrera.

³²עד באי ולקחתי אתכם אל ארץ כארצכם ארץ דגן ותירוש ארץ לחם וכרמים ארץ זית יצהר ודבש וחיו ולא תמתו ואל תשמעו אל חזקיהו כי יסית אתכם לאמר יהוה יצילנו׃

³³Hath any of the gods of the nations ever delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

³³Les dieux des nations ont-ils délivré chacun son pays de la main du roi d'Assyrie?

³³ההצל הצילו אלהי הגוים איש את ארצו מיד מלך אשור׃

³⁴Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah? have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?

³⁴Où sont les dieux de Hamath et d'Arpad? Où sont les dieux de Sepharvaïm, d'Héna et d'Ivva? Ont-ils délivré Samarie de ma main?

³⁴איה אלהי חמת וארפד איה אלהי ספרוים הנע ועוה כי הצילו את שמרון מידי׃

³⁵Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of my hand, that Jehovah should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?

³⁵Parmi tous les dieux de ces pays, quels sont ceux qui ont délivré leur pays de ma main, pour que l'Eternel délivre Jérusalem de ma main?

³⁵מי בכל אלהי הארצות אשר הצילו את ארצם מידי כי יציל יהוה את ירושלם מידי׃

³⁶But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word; for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.

³⁶Le peuple se tut, et ne lui répondit pas un mot; car le roi avait donné cet ordre: Vous ne lui répondrez pas.

³⁶והחרישו העם ולא ענו אתו דבר כי מצות המלך היא לאמר לא תענהו׃

³⁷Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

³⁷Et Eliakim, fils de Hilkija, chef de la maison du roi, Schebna, le secrétaire, et Joach, fils d'Asaph, l'archiviste, vinrent auprès d'Ezéchias, les vêtements déchirés, et lui rapportèrent les paroles de Rabschaké.

³⁷ויבא אליקים בן חלקיה אשר על הבית ושבנא הספר ויואח בן אסף המזכיר אל חזקיהו קרועי בגדים ויגדו לו דברי רב שקה׃
