¹And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha, Behold now, the place where we dwell before thee is too strait for us.

¹Les fils des prophètes dirent à Elisée: Voici, le lieu où nous sommes assis devant toi est trop étroit pour nous.

¹ויאמרו בני הנביאים אל אלישע הנה נא המקום אשר אנחנו ישבים שם לפניך צר ממנו׃

²Let us go, we pray thee, unto the Jordan, and take thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell. And he answered, Go ye.

²Allons jusqu'au Jourdain; nous prendrons là chacun une poutre, et nous nous y ferons un lieu d'habitation. Elisée répondit: Allez.

²נלכה נא עד הירדן ונקחה משם איש קורה אחת ונעשה לנו שם מקום לשבת שם ויאמר לכו׃

³And one said, Be pleased, I pray thee, to go with thy servants. And he answered, I will go.

³Et l'un d'eux dit: Consens à venir avec tes serviteurs. Il répondit: J'irai.

³ויאמר האחד הואל נא ולך את עבדיך ויאמר אני אלך׃

⁴So he went with them. And when they came to the Jordan, they cut down wood.

⁴Il partit donc avec eux. Arrivés au Jourdain, ils coupèrent du bois.

⁴וילך אתם ויבאו הירדנה ויגזרו העצים׃

⁵But as one was felling a beam, the axe-head fell into the water; and he cried, and said, Alas, my master! for it was borrowed.

⁵Et comme l'un d'eux abattait une poutre, le fer tomba dans l'eau. Il s'écria: Ah! mon seigneur, il était emprunté!

⁵ויהי האחד מפיל הקורה ואת הברזל נפל אל המים ויצעק ויאמר אהה אדני והוא שאול׃

⁶And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he showed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither, and made the iron to swim.

⁶L'homme de Dieu dit: Où est-il tombé? Et il lui montra la place. Alors Elisée coupa un morceau de bois, le jeta à la même place, et fit surnager le fer.

⁶ויאמר איש האלהים אנה נפל ויראהו את המקום ויקצב עץ וישלך שמה ויצף הברזל׃

⁷And he said, Take it up to thee. So he put out his hand, and took it.

⁷Puis il dit: Enlève-le! Et il avança la main, et le prit.

⁷ויאמר הרם לך וישלח ידו ויקחהו׃

⁸Now the king of Syria was warring against Israel; and he took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place shall be my camp.

⁸Le roi de Syrie était en guerre avec Israël, et, dans un conseil qu'il tint avec ses serviteurs, il dit: Mon camp sera dans un tel lieu.

⁸ומלך ארם היה נלחם בישראל ויועץ אל עבדיו לאמר אל מקום פלני אלמני תחנתי׃

⁹And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel, saying, Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the Syrians are coming down.

⁹Mais l'homme de Dieu fit dire au roi d'Israël: Garde-toi de passer dans ce lieu, car les Syriens y descendent.

⁹וישלח איש האלהים אל מלך ישראל לאמר השמר מעבר המקום הזה כי שם ארם נחתים׃

¹⁰And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of; and he saved himself there, not once nor twice.

¹⁰Et le roi d'Israël envoya des gens, pour s'y tenir en observation, vers le lieu que lui avait mentionné et signalé l'homme de Dieu. Cela arriva non pas une fois ni deux fois.

¹⁰וישלח מלך ישראל אל המקום אשר אמר לו איש האלהים והזהירה ונשמר שם לא אחת ולא שתים׃

¹¹And the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not show me which of us is for the king of Israel?

¹¹Le roi de Syrie en eut le coeur agité; il appela ses serviteurs, et leur dit: Ne voulez-vous pas me déclarer lequel de nous est pour le roi d'Israël?

¹¹ויסער לב מלך ארם על הדבר הזה ויקרא אל עבדיו ויאמר אליהם הלוא תגידו לי מי משלנו אל מלך ישראל׃

¹²And one of his servants said, Nay, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber.

¹²L'un de ses serviteurs répondit: Personne! ô roi mon seigneur; mais Elisée, le prophète, qui est en Israël, rapporte au roi d'Israël les paroles que tu prononces dans ta chambre à coucher.

¹²ויאמר אחד מעבדיו לוא אדני המלך כי אלישע הנביא אשר בישראל יגיד למלך ישראל את הדברים אשר תדבר בחדר משכבך׃

¹³And he said, Go and see where he is, that I may send and fetch him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan.

¹³Et le roi dit: Allez et voyez où il est, et je le ferai prendre. On vint lui dire: Voici, il est à Dothan.

¹³ויאמר לכו וראו איכה הוא ואשלח ואקחהו ויגד לו לאמר הנה בדתן׃

¹⁴Therefore sent he thither horses, and chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about.

¹⁴Il y envoya des chevaux, des chars et une forte troupe, qui arrivèrent de nuit et qui enveloppèrent la ville.

¹⁴וישלח שמה סוסים ורכב וחיל כבד ויבאו לילה ויקפו על העיר׃

¹⁵And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, a host with horses and chariots was round about the city. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?

¹⁵Le serviteur de l'homme de Dieu se leva de bon matin et sortit; et voici, une troupe entourait la ville, avec des chevaux et des chars. Et le serviteur dit à l'homme de Dieu: Ah! mon seigneur, comment ferons-nous?

¹⁵וישכם משרת איש האלהים לקום ויצא והנה חיל סובב את העיר וסוס ורכב ויאמר נערו אליו אהה אדני איכה נעשה׃

¹⁶And he answered, Fear not; for they that are with us are more than they that are with them.

¹⁶Il répondit: Ne crains point, car ceux qui sont avec nous sont en plus grand nombre que ceux qui sont avec eux.

¹⁶ויאמר אל תירא כי רבים אשר אתנו מאשר אותם׃

¹⁷And Elisha prayed, and said, Jehovah, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And Jehovah opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

¹⁷Elisée pria, et dit: Eternel, ouvre ses yeux, pour qu'il voie. Et l'Eternel ouvrit les yeux du serviteur, qui vit la montagne pleine de chevaux et de chars de feu autour d'Elisée.

¹⁷ויתפלל אלישע ויאמר יהוה פקח נא את עיניו ויראה ויפקח יהוה את עיני הנער וירא והנה ההר מלא סוסים ורכב אש סביבת אלישע׃

¹⁸And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto Jehovah, and said, Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.

¹⁸Les Syriens descendirent vers Elisée. Il adressa alors cette prière à l'Eternel: Daigne frapper d'aveuglement cette nation! Et l'Eternel les frappa d'aveuglement, selon la parole d'Elisée.

¹⁸וירדו אליו ויתפלל אלישע אל יהוה ויאמר הך נא את הגוי הזה בסנורים ויכם בסנורים כדבר אלישע׃

¹⁹And Elisha said unto them, This is not the way, neither is this the city: follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek. And he led them to Samaria.

¹⁹Elisée leur dit: Ce n'est pas ici le chemin, et ce n'est pas ici la ville; suivez-moi, et je vous conduirai vers l'homme que vous cherchez. Et il les conduisit à Samarie.

¹⁹ויאמר אלהם אלישע לא זה הדרך ולא זה העיר לכו אחרי ואוליכה אתכם אל האיש אשר תבקשון וילך אותם שמרונה׃

²⁰And it came to pass, when they were come into Samaria, that Elisha said, Jehovah, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And Jehovah opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.

²⁰Lorsqu'ils furent entrés dans Samarie, Elisée dit: Eternel, ouvre les yeux de ces gens, pour qu'ils voient! Et l'Eternel ouvrit leurs yeux, et ils virent qu'ils étaient au milieu de Samarie.

²⁰ויהי כבאם שמרון ויאמר אלישע יהוה פקח את עיני אלה ויראו ויפקח יהוה את עיניהם ויראו והנה בתוך שמרון׃

²¹And the king of Israel said unto Elisha, when he saw them, My father, shall I smite them? shall I smite them?

²¹Le roi d'Israël, en les voyant, dit à Elisée: Frapperai-je, frapperai-je, mon père?

²¹ויאמר מלך ישראל אל אלישע כראתו אותם האכה אכה אבי׃

²²And he answered, Thou shalt not smite them: wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.

²²Tu ne frapperas point, répondit Elisée; est-ce que tu frappes ceux que tu fais prisonniers avec ton épée et avec ton arc? Donne-leur du pain et de l'eau, afin qu'ils mangent et boivent; et qu'ils s'en aillent ensuite vers leur maître.

²²ויאמר לא תכה האשר שבית בחרבך ובקשתך אתה מכה שים לחם ומים לפניהם ויאכלו וישתו וילכו אל אדניהם׃

²³And he prepared great provision for them; and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. And the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.

²³Le roi d'Israël leur fit servir un grand repas, et ils mangèrent et burent; puis il les renvoya, et ils s'en allèrent vers leur maître. Et les troupes des Syriens ne revinrent plus sur le territoire d'Israël.

²³ויכרה להם כרה גדולה ויאכלו וישתו וישלחם וילכו אל אדניהם ולא יספו עוד גדודי ארם לבוא בארץ ישראל׃

²⁴And it came to pass after this, that Benhadad king of Syria gathered all his host, and went up, and besieged Samaria.

²⁴Après cela, Ben-Hadad, roi de Syrie, ayant rassemblé toute son armée, monta et assiégea Samarie.

²⁴ויהי אחרי כן ויקבץ בן הדד מלך ארם את כל מחנהו ויעל ויצר על שמרון׃

²⁵And there was a great famine in Samaria: and, behold, they besieged it, until an ass's head was sold for fourscore [pieces] of silver, and the fourth part of a kab of dove's dung for five [pieces] of silver.

²⁵Il y eut une grande famine dans Samarie; et ils la serrèrent tellement qu'une tête d'âne valait quatre-vingts sicles d'argent, et le quart d'un kab de fiente de pigeon cinq sicles d'argent.

²⁵ויהי רעב גדול בשמרון והנה צרים עליה עד היות ראש חמור בשמנים כסף ורבע הקב חרייונים בחמשה כסף׃

²⁶And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, there cried a woman unto him, saying, Help, my lord, O king.

²⁶Et comme le roi passait sur la muraille, une femme lui cria: Sauve-moi, ô roi, mon seigneur!

²⁶ויהי מלך ישראל עבר על החמה ואשה צעקה אליו לאמר הושיעה אדני המלך׃

²⁷And he said, If Jehovah do not help thee, whence shall I help thee? out of the threshing-floor, or out of the winepress?

²⁷Il répondit: Si l'Eternel ne te sauve pas, avec quoi te sauverais-je? avec le produit de l'aire ou du pressoir?

²⁷ויאמר אל יושעך יהוה מאין אושיעך המן הגרן או מן היקב׃

²⁸And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, This woman said unto me, Give thy son, that we may eat him to-day, and we will eat my son to-morrow.

²⁸Et le roi lui dit: Qu'as-tu? Elle répondit: Cette femme-là m'a dit: Donne ton fils! nous le mangerons aujourd'hui, et demain nous mangerons mon fils.

²⁸ויאמר לה המלך מה לך ותאמר האשה הזאת אמרה אלי תני את בנך ונאכלנו היום ואת בני נאכל מחר׃

²⁹So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him; and she hath hid her son.

²⁹Nous avons fait cuire mon fils, et nous l'avons mangé. Et le jour suivant, je lui ai dit: Donne ton fils, et nous le mangerons. Mais elle a caché son fils.

²⁹ונבשל את בני ונאכלהו ואמר אליה ביום האחר תני את בנך ונאכלנו ותחבא את בנה׃

³⁰And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the woman, that he rent his clothes (now he was passing by upon the wall); and the people looked, and, behold, he had sackcloth within upon his flesh.

³⁰Lorsque le roi entendit les paroles de cette femme, il déchira ses vêtements, en passant sur la muraille; et le peuple vit qu'il avait en dedans un sac sur son corps.

³⁰ויהי כשמע המלך את דברי האשה ויקרע את בגדיו והוא עבר על החמה וירא העם והנה השק על בשרו מבית׃

³¹Then he said, God do so to me, and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day.

³¹Le roi dit: Que Dieu me punisse dans toute sa rigueur, si la tête d'Elisée, fils de Schaphath, reste aujourd'hui sur lui!

³¹ויאמר כה יעשה לי אלהים וכה יוסף אם יעמד ראש אלישע בן שפט עליו היום׃

³²But Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him; and [the king] sent a man from before him: but ere the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away my head? look, when the messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold the door fast against him: is not the sound of his master's feet behind him?

³²Or Elisée était assis dans sa maison, et les anciens étaient assis auprès de lui. Le roi envoya quelqu'un devant lui. Mais avant que le messager soit arrivé, Elisée dit aux anciens: Voyez-vous que ce fils d'assassin envoie quelqu'un pour m'ôter la tête? Ecoutez! quand le messager viendra, fermez la porte, et repoussez-le avec la porte: le bruit des pas de son maître ne se fait-il pas entendre derrière lui?

³²ואלישע ישב בביתו והזקנים ישבים אתו וישלח איש מלפניו בטרם יבא המלאך אליו והוא אמר אל הזקנים הראיתם כי שלח בן המרצח הזה להסיר את ראשי ראו כבא המלאך סגרו הדלת ולחצתם אתו בדלת הלוא קול רגלי אדניו אחריו׃

³³And while he was yet talking with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of Jehovah; why should I wait for Jehovah any longer?

³³Il leur parlait encore, et déjà le messager était descendu vers lui, et disait: Voici, ce mal vient de l'Eternel; qu'ai-je à espérer encore de l'Eternel?

³³עודנו מדבר עמם והנה המלאך ירד אליו ויאמר הנה זאת הרעה מאת יהוה מה אוחיל ליהוה עוד׃
