¹Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night:

¹Achitophel dit à Absalom: Laisse-moi choisir douze mille hommes! Je me lèverai, et je poursuivrai David cette nuit même.

¹ויאמר אחיתפל אל אבשלם אבחרה נא שנים עשר אלף איש ואקומה וארדפה אחרי דוד הלילה׃

²and I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed, and will make him afraid; and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only;

²Je le surprendrai pendant qu'il est fatigué et que ses mains sont affaiblies, je l'épouvanterai, et tout le peuple qui est avec lui s'enfuira. Je frapperai le roi seul,

²ואבוא עליו והוא יגע ורפה ידים והחרדתי אתו ונס כל העם אשר אתו והכיתי את המלך לבדו׃

³and I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: [so] all the people shall be in peace.

³et je ramènerai à toi tout le peuple; la mort de l'homme à qui tu en veux assurera le retour de tous, et tout le peuple sera en paix.

³ואשיבה כל העם אליך כשוב הכל האיש אשר אתה מבקש כל העם יהיה שלום׃

⁴And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.

⁴Cette parole plut à Absalom et à tous les anciens d'Israël.

⁴ויישר הדבר בעיני אבשלם ובעיני כל זקני ישראל׃

⁵Then said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith.

⁵Cependant Absalom dit: Appelez encore Huschaï, l'Arkien, et que nous entendions aussi ce qu'il dira.

⁵ויאמר אבשלום קרא נא גם לחושי הארכי ונשמעה מה בפיו גם הוא׃

⁶And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do [after] his saying? if not, speak thou.

⁶Huschaï vint auprès d'Absalom, et Absalom lui dit: Voici comment a parlé Achitophel: devons-nous faire ce qu'il a dit, ou non? Parle, toi!

⁶ויבא חושי אל אבשלום ויאמר אבשלום אליו לאמר כדבר הזה דבר אחיתפל הנעשה את דברו אם אין אתה דבר׃

⁷And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given this time is not good.

⁷Huschaï répondit à Absalom: Pour cette fois le conseil qu'a donné Achitophel n'est pas bon.

⁷ויאמר חושי אל אבשלום לא טובה העצה אשר יעץ אחיתפל בפעם הזאת׃

⁸Hushai said moreover, Thou knowest thy father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field; and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.

⁸Et Huschaï dit: Tu connais la bravoure de ton père et de ses gens, ils sont furieux comme le serait dans les champs une ourse à qui l'on aurait enlevé ses petits. Ton père est un homme de guerre, et il ne passera pas la nuit avec le peuple;

⁸ויאמר חושי אתה ידעת את אביך ואת אנשיו כי גברים המה ומרי נפש המה כדב שכול בשדה ואביך איש מלחמה ולא ילין את העם׃

⁹Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some [other] place: and it will come to pass, when some of them are fallen at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom.

⁹voici maintenant, il est caché dans quelque fosse ou dans quelque autre lieu. Et si, dès le commencement, il en est qui tombent sous leurs coups, on ne tardera pas à l'apprendre et l'on dira: Il y a une défaite parmi le peuple qui suit Absalom!

⁹הנה עתה הוא נחבא באחת הפחתים או באחד המקומת והיה כנפל בהם בתחלה ושמע השמע ואמר היתה מגפה בעם אשר אחרי אבשלם׃

¹⁰And even he that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, will utterly melt; for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they that are with him are valiant men.

¹⁰Alors le plus vaillant, eût-il un coeur de lion, sera saisi d'épouvante; car tout Israël sait que ton père est un héros et qu'il a des braves avec lui.

¹⁰והוא גם בן חיל אשר לבו כלב האריה המס ימס כי ידע כל ישראל כי גבור אביך ובני חיל אשר אתו׃

¹¹But I counsel that all Israel be gathered together unto thee, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person.

¹¹Je conseille donc que tout Israël se rassemble auprès de toi, depuis Dan jusqu'à Beer-Schéba, multitude pareille au sable qui est sur le bord de la mer. Tu marcheras en personne au combat.

¹¹כי יעצתי האסף יאסף עליך כל ישראל מדן ועד באר שבע כחול אשר על הים לרב ופניך הלכים בקרב׃

¹²So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground; and of him and of all the men that are with him we will not leave so much as one.

¹²Nous arriverons à lui en quelque lieu que nous le trouvions, et nous tomberons sur lui comme la rosée tombe sur le sol; et pas un n'échappera, ni lui ni aucun des hommes qui sont avec lui.

¹²ובאנו אליו באחת המקומת אשר נמצא שם ונחנו עליו כאשר יפל הטל על האדמה ולא נותר בו ובכל האנשים אשר אתו גם אחד׃

¹³Moreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there.

¹³S'il se retire dans une ville, tout Israël portera des cordes vers cette ville, et nous la traînerons au torrent, jusqu'à ce qu'on n'en trouve plus une pierre.

¹³ואם אל עיר יאסף והשיאו כל ישראל אל העיר ההיא חבלים וסחבנו אתו עד הנחל עד אשר לא נמצא שם גם צרור׃

¹⁴And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For Jehovah had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that Jehovah might bring evil upon Absalom.

¹⁴Absalom et tous les gens d'Israël dirent: Le conseil de Huschaï, l'Arkien, vaut mieux que le conseil d'Achitophel. Or l'Eternel avait résolu d'anéantir le bon conseil d'Achitophel, afin d'amener le malheur sur Absalom.

¹⁴ויאמר אבשלום וכל איש ישראל טובה עצת חושי הארכי מעצת אחיתפל ויהוה צוה להפר את עצת אחיתפל הטובה לבעבור הביא יהוה אל אבשלום את הרעה׃

¹⁵Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled.

¹⁵Huschaï dit aux sacrificateurs Tsadok et Abiathar: Achitophel a donné tel et tel conseil à Absalom et aux anciens d'Israël; et moi, j'ai conseillé telle et telle chose.

¹⁵ויאמר חושי אל צדוק ואל אביתר הכהנים כזאת וכזאת יעץ אחיתפל את אבשלם ואת זקני ישראל וכזאת וכזאת יעצתי אני׃

¹⁶Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, Lodge not this night at the fords of the wilderness, but by all means pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.

¹⁶Maintenant, envoyez tout de suite informer David et faites-lui dire: Ne passe point la nuit dans les plaines du désert, mais va plus loin, de peur que le roi et tout le peuple qui est avec lui ne soient exposés à périr.

¹⁶ועתה שלחו מהרה והגידו לדוד לאמר אל תלן הלילה בערבות המדבר וגם עבור תעבור פן יבלע למלך ולכל העם אשר אתו׃

¹⁷Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying by En-rogel; and a maid-servant used to go and tell them; and they went and told king David: for they might not be seen to come into the city.

¹⁷Jonathan et Achimaats se tenaient à En-Roguel. Une servante vint leur dire d'aller informer le roi David; car ils n'osaient pas se montrer et entrer dans la ville.

¹⁷ויהונתן ואחימעץ עמדים בעין רגל והלכה השפחה והגידה להם והם ילכו והגידו למלך דוד כי לא יוכלו להראות לבוא העירה׃

¹⁸But a lad saw them, and told Absalom: and they went both of them away quickly, and came to the house of a man in Bahurim, who had a well in his court; and they went down thither.

¹⁸Un jeune homme les aperçut, et le rapporta à Absalom. Mais ils partirent tous deux en hâte, et ils arrivèrent à Bachurim à la maison d'un homme qui avait un puits dans sa cour, et ils y descendirent.

¹⁸וירא אתם נער ויגד לאבשלם וילכו שניהם מהרה ויבאו אל בית איש בבחורים ולו באר בחצרו וירדו שם׃

¹⁹And the woman took and spread the covering over the well's mouth, and strewed bruised grain thereon; and nothing was known.

¹⁹La femme prit une couverture qu'elle étendit sur l'ouverture du puits, et elle y répandit du grain pilé pour qu'on ne se doutât de rien.

¹⁹ותקח האשה ותפרש את המסך על פני הבאר ותשטח עליו הרפות ולא נודע דבר׃

²⁰And Absalom's servants came to the woman to the house; and they said, Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They are gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.

²⁰Les serviteurs d'Absalom entrèrent dans la maison auprès de cette femme, et dirent: Où sont Achimaats et Jonathan? La femme leur répondit: Ils ont passé le ruisseau. Ils cherchèrent, et ne les trouvant pas, ils retournèrent à Jérusalem.

²⁰ויבאו עבדי אבשלום אל האשה הביתה ויאמרו איה אחימעץ ויהונתן ותאמר להם האשה עברו מיכל המים ויבקשו ולא מצאו וישבו ירושלם׃

²¹And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David; and they said unto David, Arise ye, and pass quickly over the water; for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you.

²¹Après leur départ, Achimaats et Jonathan remontèrent du puits et allèrent informer le roi David. Ils dirent à David: Levez-vous et hâtez-vous de passer l'eau, car Achitophel a conseillé contre vous telle chose.

²¹ויהי אחרי לכתם ויעלו מהבאר וילכו ויגדו למלך דוד ויאמרו אל דוד קומו ועברו מהרה את המים כי ככה יעץ עליכם אחיתפל׃

²²Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over the Jordan: by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over the Jordan.

²²David et tout le peuple qui était avec lui se levèrent et ils passèrent le Jourdain; à la lumière du matin, il n'y en avait pas un qui fût resté à l'écart, pas un qui n'eût passé le Jourdain.

²²ויקם דוד וכל העם אשר אתו ויעברו את הירדן עד אור הבקר עד אחד לא נעדר אשר לא עבר את הירדן׃

²³And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home, unto his city, and set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.

²³Achitophel, voyant que son conseil n'était pas suivi, sella son âne et partit pour s'en aller chez lui dans sa ville. Il donna ses ordres à sa maison, et il s'étrangla. C'est ainsi qu'il mourut, et on l'enterra dans le sépulcre de son père.

²³ואחיתפל ראה כי לא נעשתה עצתו ויחבש את החמור ויקם וילך אל ביתו אל עירו ויצו אל ביתו ויחנק וימת ויקבר בקבר אביו׃

²⁴Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.

²⁴David arriva à Mahanaïm. Et Absalom passa le Jourdain, lui et tous les hommes d'Israël avec lui.

²⁴ודוד בא מחנימה ואבשלם עבר את הירדן הוא וכל איש ישראל עמו׃

²⁵And Absalom set Amasa over the host instead of Joab. Now Amasa was the son of a man, whose name was Ithra the Israelite, that went in to Abigal the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah, Joab's mother.

²⁵Absalom mit Amasa à la tête de l'armée, en remplacement de Joab; Amasa était fils d'un homme appelé Jithra, l'Israélite, qui était allé vers Abigal, fille de Nachasch et soeur de Tseruja, mère de Joab.

²⁵ואת עמשא שם אבשלם תחת יואב על הצבא ועמשא בן איש ושמו יתרא הישראלי אשר בא אל אביגל בת נחש אחות צרויה אם יואב׃

²⁶And Israel and Absalom encamped in the land of Gilead.

²⁶Israël et Absalom campèrent dans le pays de Galaad.

²⁶ויחן ישראל ואבשלם ארץ הגלעד׃

²⁷And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim,

²⁷Lorsque David fut arrivé à Mahanaïm, Schobi, fils de Nachasch, de Rabba des fils d'Ammon, Makir, fils d'Ammiel, de Lodebar, et Barzillaï, le Galaadite, de Roguelim,

²⁷ויהי כבוא דוד מחנימה ושבי בן נחש מרבת בני עמון ומכיר בן עמיאל מלא דבר וברזלי הגלעדי מרגלים׃

²⁸brought beds, and basins, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and meal, and parched [grain], and beans, and lentils, and parched [pulse],

²⁸apportèrent des lits, des bassins, des vases de terre, du froment, de l'orge, de la farine, du grain rôti, des fèves, des lentilles, des pois rôtis,

²⁸משכב וספות וכלי יוצר וחטים ושערים וקמח וקלי ופול ועדשים וקלי׃

²⁹and honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of the herd, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people are hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.

²⁹du miel, de la crème, des brebis, et des fromages de vache. Ils apportèrent ces choses à David et au peuple qui était avec lui, afin qu'ils mangeassent; car ils disaient: Ce peuple a dû souffrir de la faim, de la fatigue et de la soif, dans le désert.

²⁹ודבש וחמאה וצאן ושפות בקר הגישו לדוד ולעם אשר אתו לאכול כי אמרו העם רעב ועיף וצמא במדבר׃
