¹It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom a hundred and twenty satraps, who should be throughout the whole kingdom;

¹Darius trouva bon d'établir sur le royaume cent vingt satrapes, qui devaient être dans tout le royaume.

¹שפר קדם דריוש והקים על מלכותא לאחשדרפניא מאה ועשרין די להון בכל מלכותא׃

²and over them three presidents, of whom Daniel was one; that these satraps might give account unto them, and that the king should have no damage.

²Il mit à leur tête trois chefs, au nombre desquels était Daniel, afin que ces satrapes leur rendissent compte, et que le roi ne souffrît aucun dommage.

²ועלא מנהון סרכין תלתא די דניאל חד מנהון די להון אחשדרפניא אלין יהבין להון טעמא ומלכא לא להוא נזק׃

³Then this Daniel was distinguished above the presidents and the satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.

³Daniel surpassait les chefs et les satrapes, parce qu'il y avait en lui un esprit supérieur; et le roi pensait à l'établir sur tout le royaume.

³אדין דניאל דנה הוא מתנצח על סרכיא ואחשדרפניא כל קבל די רוח יתירא בה ומלכא עשית להקמותה על כל מלכותא׃

⁴Then the presidents and the satraps sought to find occasion against Daniel as touching the kingdom; but they could find no occasion nor fault, forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.

⁴Alors les chefs et les satrapes cherchèrent une occasion d'accuser Daniel en ce qui concernait les affaires du royaume. Mais ils ne purent trouver aucune occasion, ni aucune chose à reprendre, parce qu'il était fidèle, et qu'on n'apercevait chez lui ni faute, ni rien de mauvais.

⁴אדין סרכיא ואחשדרפניא הוו בעין עלה להשכחה לדניאל מצד מלכותא וכל עלה ושחיתה לא יכלין להשכחה כל קבל די מהימן הוא וכל שלו ושחיתה לא השתכחת עלוהי׃

⁵Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.

⁵Et ces hommes dirent: Nous ne trouverons aucune occasion contre ce Daniel, à moins que nous n'en trouvions une dans la loi de son Dieu.

⁵אדין גבריא אלך אמרין די לא נהשכח לדניאל דנה כל עלא להן השכחנה עלוהי בדת אלהה׃

⁶Then these presidents and satraps assembled together to the king, and said thus unto him, King Darius, live for ever.

⁶Puis ces chefs et ces satrapes se rendirent tumultueusement auprès du roi, et lui parlèrent ainsi: Roi Darius, vis éternellement!

⁶אדין סרכיא ואחשדרפניא אלן הרגשו על מלכא וכן אמרין לה דריוש מלכא לעלמין חיי׃

⁷All the presidents of the kingdom, the deputies and the satraps, the counsellors and the governors, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a strong interdict, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.

⁷Tous les chefs du royaume, les intendants, les satrapes, les conseillers, et les gouverneurs sont d'avis qu'il soit publié un édit royal, avec une défense sévère, portant que quiconque, dans l'espace de trente jours, adressera des prières à quelque dieu ou à quelque homme, excepté à toi, ô roi, sera jeté dans la fosse aux lions.

⁷אתיעטו כל סרכי מלכותא סגניא ואחשדרפניא הדבריא ופחותא לקימה קים מלכא ולתקפה אסר די כל די יבעה בעו מן כל אלה ואנש עד יומין תלתין להן מנך מלכא יתרמא לגב אריותא׃

⁸Now, O king, establish the interdict, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.

⁸Maintenant, ô roi, confirme la défense, et écris le décret, afin qu'il soit irrévocable, selon la loi des Mèdes et des Perses, qui est immuable.

⁸כען מלכא תקים אסרא ותרשם כתבא די לא להשניה כדת מדי ופרס די לא תעדא׃

⁹Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the interdict.

⁹Là-dessus le roi Darius écrivit le décret et la défense.

⁹כל קבל דנה מלכא דריוש רשם כתבא ואסרא׃

¹⁰And when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house (now his windows were open in his chamber toward Jerusalem) and he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.

¹⁰Lorsque Daniel sut que le décret était écrit, il se retira dans sa maison, où les fenêtres de la chambre supérieure étaient ouvertes dans la direction de Jérusalem; et trois fois le jour il se mettait à genoux, il priait, et il louait son Dieu, comme il le faisait auparavant.

¹⁰ודניאל כדי ידע די רשים כתבא על לביתה וכוין פתיחן לה בעליתה נגד ירושלם וזמנין תלתה ביומא הוא ברך על ברכוהי ומצלא ומודא קדם אלהה כל קבל די הוא עבד מן קדמת דנה׃

¹¹Then these men assembled together, and found Daniel making petition and supplication before his God.

¹¹Alors ces hommes entrèrent tumultueusement, et ils trouvèrent Daniel qui priait et invoquait son Dieu.

¹¹אדין גבריא אלך הרגשו והשכחו לדניאל בעא ומתחנן קדם אלהה׃

¹²Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king's interdict: Hast thou not signed an interdict, that every man that shall make petition unto any god or man within thirty days, save unto thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.

¹²Puis ils se présentèrent devant le roi, et lui dirent au sujet de la défense royale: N'as-tu pas écrit une défense portant que quiconque dans l'espace de trente jours adresserait des prières à quelque dieu ou à quelque homme, excepté à toi, ô roi, serait jeté dans la fosse aux lions? Le roi répondit: La chose est certaine, selon la loi des Mèdes et des Perses, qui est immuable.

¹²באדין קריבו ואמרין קדם מלכא על אסר מלכא הלא אסר רשמת די כל אנש די יבעה מן כל אלה ואנש עד יומין תלתין להן מנך מלכא יתרמא לגוב אריותא ענה מלכא ואמר יציבא מלתא כדת מדי ופרס די לא תעדא׃

¹³Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, who is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the interdict that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.

¹³Ils prirent de nouveau la parole et dirent au roi: Daniel, l'un des captifs de Juda, n'a tenu aucun compte de toi, ô roi, ni de la défense que tu as écrite, et il fait sa prière trois fois le jour.

¹³באדין ענו ואמרין קדם מלכא די דניאל די מן בני גלותא די יהוד לא שם עליך מלכא טעם ועל אסרא די רשמת וזמנין תלתה ביומא בעא בעותה׃

¹⁴Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore displeased, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him; and he labored till the going down of the sun to rescue him.

¹⁴Le roi fut très affligé quand il entendit cela; il prit à coeur de délivrer Daniel, et jusqu'au coucher du soleil il s'efforça de le sauver.

¹⁴אדין מלכא כדי מלתא שמע שגיא באש עלוהי ועל דניאל שם בל לשיזבותה ועד מעלי שמשא הוא משתדר להצלותה׃

¹⁵Then these men assembled together unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that it is a law of the Medes and Persians, that no interdict nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed.

¹⁵Mais ces hommes insistèrent auprès du roi, et lui dirent: Sache, ô roi, que la loi des Mèdes et des Perses exige que toute défense ou tout décret confirmé par le roi soit irrévocable.

¹⁵באדין גבריא אלך הרגשו על מלכא ואמרין למלכא דע מלכא די דת למדי ופרס די כל אסר וקים די מלכא יהקים לא להשניה׃

¹⁶Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. [Now] the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee.

¹⁶Alors le roi donna l'ordre qu'on amenât Daniel, et qu'on le jetât dans la fosse aux lions. Le roi prit la parole et dit à Daniel: Puisse ton Dieu, que tu sers avec persévérance, te délivrer!

¹⁶באדין מלכא אמר והיתיו לדניאל ורמו לגבא די אריותא ענה מלכא ואמר לדניאל אלהך די אנתה פלח לה בתדירא הוא ישיזבנך׃

¹⁷And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that nothing might be changed concerning Daniel.

¹⁷On apporta une pierre, et on la mit sur l'ouverture de la fosse; le roi la scella de son anneau et de l'anneau de ses grands, afin que rien ne fût changé à l'égard de Daniel.

¹⁷והיתית אבן חדה ושמת על פם גבא וחתמה מלכא בעזקתה ובעזקת רברבנוהי די לא תשנא צבו בדניאל׃

¹⁸Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting; neither were instruments of music brought before him: and his sleep fled from him.

¹⁸Le roi se rendit ensuite dans son palais; il passa la nuit à jeun, il ne fit point venir de concubine auprès de lui, et il ne put se livrer au sommeil.

¹⁸אדין אזל מלכא להיכלה ובת טות ודחון לא הנעל קדמוהי ושנתה נדת עלוהי׃

¹⁹Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions.

¹⁹Le roi se leva au point du jour, avec l'aurore, et il alla précipitamment à la fosse aux lions.

¹⁹באדין מלכא בשפרפרא יקום בנגהא ובהתבהלה לגבא די אריותא אזל׃

²⁰And when he came near unto the den to Daniel, he cried with a lamentable voice; the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions?

²⁰En s'approchant de la fosse, il appela Daniel d'une voix triste. Le roi prit la parole et dit à Daniel: Daniel, serviteur du Dieu vivant, ton Dieu, que tu sers avec persévérance, a-t-il pu te délivrer des lions?

²⁰וכמקרבה לגבא לדניאל בקל עציב זעק ענה מלכא ואמר לדניאל דניאל עבד אלהא חיא אלהך די אנתה פלח לה בתדירא היכל לשיזבותך מן אריותא׃

²¹Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever.

²¹Et Daniel dit au roi: Roi, vis éternellement?

²¹אדין דניאל עם מלכא מלל מלכא לעלמין חיי׃

²²My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, and they have not hurt me; forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.

²²Mon Dieu a envoyé son ange et fermé la gueule des lions, qui ne m'ont fait aucun mal, parce que j'ai été trouvé innocent devant lui; et devant toi non plus, ô roi, je n'ai rien fait de mauvais.

²²אלהי שלח מלאכה וסגר פם אריותא ולא חבלוני כל קבל די קדמוהי זכו השתכחת לי ואף קדמיך מלכא חבולה לא עבדת׃

²³Then was the king exceeding glad, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he had trusted in his God.

²³Alors le roi fut très joyeux, et il ordonna qu'on fît sortir Daniel de la fosse. Daniel fut retiré de la fosse, et on ne trouva sur lui aucune blessure, parce qu'il avait eu confiance en son Dieu.

²³באדין מלכא שגיא טאב עלוהי ולדניאל אמר להנסקה מן גבא והסק דניאל מן גבא וכל חבל לא השתכח בה די הימן באלהה׃

²⁴And the king commanded, and they brought those men that had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and brake all their bones in pieces, before they came to the bottom of the den.

²⁴Le roi ordonna que ces hommes qui avaient accusé Daniel fussent amenés et jetés dans la fosse aux lions, eux, leurs enfants et leurs femmes; et avant qu'ils fussent parvenus au fond de la fosse, les lions les saisirent et brisèrent tous leurs os.

²⁴ואמר מלכא והיתיו גבריא אלך די אכלו קרצוהי די דניאל ולגב אריותא רמו אנון בניהון ונשיהון ולא מטו לארעית גבא עד די שלטו בהון אריותא וכל גרמיהון הדקו׃

²⁵Then king Darius wrote unto all the peoples, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied unto you.

²⁵Après cela, le roi Darius écrivit à tous les peuples, à toutes les nations, aux hommes de toutes langues, qui habitaient sur toute la terre: Que la paix vous soit donnée avec abondance!

²⁵באדין דריוש מלכא כתב לכל עממיא אמיא ולשניא די דארין בכל ארעא שלמכון ישגא׃

²⁶I make a decree, that in all the dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel; for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, And his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed; and his dominion shall be even unto the end.

²⁶J'ordonne que, dans toute l'étendue de mon royaume, on ait de la crainte et de la frayeur pour le Dieu de Daniel. Car il est le Dieu vivant, et il subsiste éternellement; son royaume ne sera jamais détruit, et sa domination durera jusqu'à la fin.

²⁶מן קדמי שים טעם די בכל שלטן מלכותי להון זאעין ודחלין מן קדם אלהה די דניאל די הוא אלהא חיא וקים לעלמין ומלכותה די לא תתחבל ושלטנה עד סופא׃

²⁷He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.

²⁷C'est lui qui délivre et qui sauve, qui opère des signes et des prodiges dans les cieux et sur la terre. C'est lui qui a délivré Daniel de la puissance des lions.

²⁷משיזב ומצל ועבד אתין ותמהין בשמיא ובארעא די שיזיב לדניאל מן יד אריותא׃

²⁸So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

²⁸Daniel prospéra sous le règne de Darius, et sous le règne de Cyrus, le Perse.

²⁸ודניאל דנה הצלח במלכות דריוש ובמלכות כורש פרסיא׃
