¹After these things, when the wrath of king Ahasuerus was pacified, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her.

¹Après ces choses, lorsque la colère du roi Assuérus se fut calmée, il pensa à Vasthi, à ce qu'elle avait fait, et à la décision qui avait été prise à son sujet.

¹אחר הדברים האלה כשך חמת המלך אחשורוש זכר את ושתי ואת אשר עשתה ואת אשר נגזר עליה׃

²Then said the king's servants that ministered unto him, Let there be fair young virgins sought for the king:

²Alors ceux qui servaient le roi dirent: Qu'on cherche pour le roi des jeunes filles, vierges et belles de figure;

²ויאמרו נערי המלך משרתיו יבקשו למלך נערות בתולות טובות מראה׃

³and let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather together all the fair young virgins unto Shushan the palace, to the house of the women, unto the custody of Hegai the king's chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their things for purification be given them;

³que le roi établisse dans toutes les provinces de son royaume des commissaires chargés de rassembler toutes les jeunes filles, vierges et belles de figure, à Suse, la capitale, dans la maison des femmes, sous la surveillance d'Hégué, eunuque du roi et gardien des femmes, qui leur donnera les choses nécessaires pour leur toilette;

³ויפקד המלך פקידים בכל מדינות מלכותו ויקבצו את כל נערה בתולה טובת מראה אל שושן הבירה אל בית הנשים אל יד הגא סריס המלך שמר הנשים ונתון תמרוקיהן׃

⁴and let the maiden that pleaseth the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so.

⁴et que la jeune fille qui plaira au roi devienne reine à la place de Vasthi. Cet avis eut l'approbation du roi, et il fit ainsi.

⁴והנערה אשר תיטב בעיני המלך תמלך תחת ושתי וייטב הדבר בעיני המלך ויעש כן׃

⁵There was a certain Jew in Shushan the palace, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite,

⁵Il y avait dans Suse, la capitale, un Juif nommé Mardochée, fils de Jaïr, fils de Schimeï, fils de Kis, homme de Benjamin,

⁵איש יהודי היה בשושן הבירה ושמו מרדכי בן יאיר בן שמעי בן קיש איש ימיני׃

⁶who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captives that had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.

⁶qui avait été emmené de Jérusalem parmi les captifs déportés avec Jeconia, roi de Juda, par Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone.

⁶אשר הגלה מירושלים עם הגלה אשר הגלתה עם יכניה מלך יהודה אשר הגלה נבוכדנאצר מלך בבל׃

⁷And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle's daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maiden was fair and beautiful; and when her father and mother were dead, Mordecai took her for his own daughter.

⁷Il élevait Hadassa, qui est Esther, fille de son oncle; car elle n'avait ni père ni mère. La jeune fille était belle de taille et belle de figure. A la mort de son père et de sa mère, Mardochée l'avait adoptée pour fille.

⁷ויהי אמן את הדסה היא אסתר בת דדו כי אין לה אב ואם והנערה יפת תאר וטובת מראה ובמות אביה ואמה לקחה מרדכי לו לבת׃

⁸So it came to pass, when the king's commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the palace, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was taken into the king's house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.

⁸Lorsqu'on eut publié l'ordre du roi et son édit, et qu'un grand nombre de jeunes filles furent rassemblées à Suse, la capitale, sous la surveillance d'Hégaï, Esther fut aussi prise et conduite dans la maison du roi, sous la surveillance d'Hégaï, gardien des femmes.

⁸ויהי בהשמע דבר המלך ודתו ובהקבץ נערות רבות אל שושן הבירה אל יד הגי ותלקח אסתר אל בית המלך אל יד הגי שמר הנשים׃

⁹And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for purification, with her portions, and the seven maidens who were meet to be given her out of the king's house: and he removed her and her maidens to the best place of the house of the women.

⁹La jeune fille lui plut, et trouva grâce devant lui; il s'empressa de lui fournir les choses nécessaires pour sa toilette et pour sa subsistance, lui donna sept jeunes filles choisies dans la maison du roi, et la plaça avec ses jeunes filles dans le meilleur appartement de la maison des femmes.

⁹ותיטב הנערה בעיניו ותשא חסד לפניו ויבהל את תמרוקיה ואת מנותה לתת לה ואת שבע הנערות הראיות לתת לה מבית המלך וישנה ואת נערותיה לטוב בית הנשים׃

¹⁰Esther had not made known her people nor her kindred; for Mordecai had charged her that she should not make it known.

¹⁰Esther ne fit connaître ni son peuple ni sa naissance, car Mardochée lui avait défendu d'en parler.

¹⁰לא הגידה אסתר את עמה ואת מולדתה כי מרדכי צוה עליה אשר לא תגיד׃

¹¹And Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women's house, to know how Esther did, and what would become of her.

¹¹Et chaque jour Mardochée allait et venait devant la cour de la maison des femmes, pour savoir comment se portait Esther et comment on la traitait.

¹¹ובכל יום ויום מרדכי מתהלך לפני חצר בית הנשים לדעת את שלום אסתר ומה יעשה בה׃

¹²Now when the turn of every maiden was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that it had been done to her according to the law for the women twelve months (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, [to wit], six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odors and with the things for the purifying of the women),

¹²Chaque jeune fille allait à son tour vers le roi Assuérus, après avoir employé douze mois à s'acquitter de ce qui était prescrit aux femmes; pendant ce temps, elles prenaient soin de leur toilette, six mois avec de l'huile de myrrhe, et six mois avec des aromates et des parfums en usage parmi les femmes.

¹²ובהגיע תר נערה ונערה לבוא אל המלך אחשורוש מקץ היות לה כדת הנשים שנים עשר חדש כי כן ימלאו ימי מרוקיהן ששה חדשים בשמן המר וששה חדשים בבשמים ובתמרוקי הנשים׃

¹³then in this wise came the maiden unto the king: whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king's house.

¹³C'est ainsi que chaque jeune fille allait vers le roi; et, quand elle passait de la maison des femmes dans la maison du roi, on lui laissait prendre avec elle tout ce qu'elle voulait.

¹³ובזה הנערה באה אל המלך את כל אשר תאמר ינתן לה לבוא עמה מבית הנשים עד בית המלך׃

¹⁴In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king's chamberlain, who kept the concubines: she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and she were called by name.

¹⁴Elle y allait le soir; et le lendemain matin elle passait dans la seconde maison des femmes, sous la surveillance de Schaaschgaz, eunuque du roi et gardien des concubines. Elle ne retournait plus vers le roi, à moins que le roi n'en eût le désir et qu'elle ne fût appelée par son nom.

¹⁴בערב היא באה ובבקר היא שבה אל בית הנשים שני אל יד שעשגז סריס המלך שמר הפילגשים לא תבוא עוד אל המלך כי אם חפץ בה המלך ונקראה בשם׃

¹⁵Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king's chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained favor in the sight of all them that looked upon her.

¹⁵Lorsque son tour d'aller vers le roi fut arrivé, Esther, fille d'Abichaïl, oncle de Mardochée qui l'avait adoptée pour fille, ne demanda que ce qui fut désigné par Hégaï, eunuque du roi et gardien des femmes. Esther trouvait grâce aux yeux de tous ceux qui la voyaient.

¹⁵ובהגיע תר אסתר בת אביחיל דד מרדכי אשר לקח לו לבת לבוא אל המלך לא בקשה דבר כי אם את אשר יאמר הגי סריס המלך שמר הנשים ותהי אסתר נשאת חן בעיני כל ראיה׃

¹⁶So Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.

¹⁶Esther fut conduite auprès du roi Assuérus, dans sa maison royale, le dixième mois, qui est le mois de Tébeth, la septième année de son règne.

¹⁶ותלקח אסתר אל המלך אחשורוש אל בית מלכותו בחדש העשירי הוא חדש טבת בשנת שבע למלכותו׃

¹⁷And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained favor and kindness in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.

¹⁷Le roi aima Esther plus que toutes les autres femmes, et elle obtint grâce et faveur devant lui plus que toutes les autres jeunes filles. Il mit la couronne royale sur sa tête, et la fit reine à la place de Vasthi.

¹⁷ויאהב המלך את אסתר מכל הנשים ותשא חן וחסד לפניו מכל הבתולת וישם כתר מלכות בראשה וימליכה תחת ושתי׃

¹⁸Then the king made a great feast unto all his princes and his servants, even Esther's feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the bounty of the king.

¹⁸Le roi donna un grand festin à tous ses princes et à ses serviteurs, un festin en l'honneur d'Esther; il accorda du repos aux provinces, et fit des présents avec une libéralité royale.

¹⁸ויעש המלך משתה גדול לכל שריו ועבדיו את משתה אסתר והנחה למדינות עשה ויתן משאת כיד המלך׃

¹⁹And when the virgins were gathered together the second time, then Mordecai was sitting in the king's gate.

¹⁹La seconde fois qu'on assembla les jeunes filles, Mardochée était assis à la porte du roi.

¹⁹ובהקבץ בתולות שנית ומרדכי ישב בשער המלך׃

²⁰Esther had not yet made known her kindred nor her people; as Mordecai had charged her: for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with him.

²⁰Esther n'avait fait connaître ni sa naissance ni son peuple, car Mardochée le lui avait défendu, et elle suivait les ordres de Mardochée aussi fidèlement qu'à l'époque où elle était sous sa tutelle.

²⁰אין אסתר מגדת מולדתה ואת עמה כאשר צוה עליה מרדכי ואת מאמר מרדכי אסתר עשה כאשר היתה באמנה אתו׃

²¹In those days, while Mordecai was sitting in the king's gate, two of the king's chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those that kept the threshold, were wroth, and sought to lay hands on the king Ahasuerus.

²¹Dans ce même temps, comme Mardochée était assis à la porte du roi, Bigthan et Théresch, deux eunuques du roi, gardes du seuil, cédèrent à un mouvement d'irritation et voulurent porter la main sur le roi Assuérus.

²¹בימים ההם ומרדכי ישב בשער המלך קצף בגתן ותרש שני סריסי המלך משמרי הסף ויבקשו לשלח יד במלך אחשורש׃

²²And the thing became known to Mordecai, who showed it unto Esther the queen; and Esther told the king [thereof] in Mordecai's name.

²²Mardochée eut connaissance de la chose et en informa la reine Esther, qui la redit au roi de la part de Mardochée.

²²ויודע הדבר למרדכי ויגד לאסתר המלכה ותאמר אסתר למלך בשם מרדכי׃

²³And when inquisition was made of the matter, and it was found to be so, they were both hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.

²³Le fait ayant été vérifié et trouvé exact, les deux eunuques furent pendus à un bois. Et cela fut écrit dans le livre des Chroniques en présence du roi.

²³ויבקש הדבר וימצא ויתלו שניהם על עץ ויכתב בספר דברי הימים לפני המלך׃
