¹And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men as spies secretly, saying, Go, view the land, and Jericho. And they went and came into the house of a harlot whose name was Rahab, and lay there.

¹Josué, fils de Nun, fit partir secrètement de Sittim deux espions, en leur disant: Allez, examinez le pays, et en particulier Jéricho. Ils partirent, et ils arrivèrent dans la maison d'une prostituée, qui se nommait Rahab, et ils y couchèrent.

¹וישלח יהושע בן נון מן השטים שנים אנשים מרגלים חרש לאמר לכו ראו את הארץ ואת יריחו וילכו ויבאו בית אשה זונה ושמה רחב וישכבו שמה׃

²And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to-night of the children of Israel to search out the land.

²On dit au roi de Jéricho: Voici, des hommes d'entre les enfants d'Israël sont arrivés ici, cette nuit, pour explorer le pays.

²ויאמר למלך יריחו לאמר הנה אנשים באו הנה הלילה מבני ישראל לחפר את הארץ׃

³And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, that are entered into thy house; for they are come to search out all the land.

³Le roi de Jéricho envoya dire à Rahab: Fais sortir les hommes qui sont venus chez toi, qui sont entrés dans ta maison; car c'est pour explorer tout le pays qu'ils sont venus.

³וישלח מלך יריחו אל רחב לאמר הוציאי האנשים הבאים אליך אשר באו לביתך כי לחפר את כל הארץ באו׃

⁴And the woman took the two men, and hid them; and she said, Yea, the men came unto me, but I knew not whence they were:

⁴La femme prit les deux hommes, et les cacha; et elle dit: Il est vrai que ces hommes sont arrivés chez moi, mais je ne savais pas d'où ils étaient;

⁴ותקח האשה את שני האנשים ותצפנו ותאמר כן באו אלי האנשים ולא ידעתי מאין המה׃

⁵and it came to pass about the time of the shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out; whither the men went I know not: pursue after them quickly; for ye will overtake them.

⁵et, comme la porte a dû se fermer de nuit, ces hommes sont sortis; j'ignore où ils sont allés: hâtez-vous de les poursuivre et vous les atteindrez.

⁵ויהי השער לסגור בחשך והאנשים יצאו לא ידעתי אנה הלכו האנשים רדפו מהר אחריהם כי תשיגום׃

⁶But she had brought them up to the roof, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.

⁶Elle les avait fait monter sur le toit, et les avait cachés sous des tiges de lin, qu'elle avait arrangées sur le toit.

⁶והיא העלתם הגגה ותטמנם בפשתי העץ הערכות לה על הגג׃

⁷And the men pursued after them the way to the Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they that pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.

⁷Ces gens les poursuivirent par le chemin qui mène au gué du Jourdain, et l'on ferma la porte après qu'ils furent sortis.

⁷והאנשים רדפו אחריהם דרך הירדן על המעברות והשער סגרו אחרי כאשר יצאו הרדפים אחריהם׃

⁸And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;

⁸Avant que les espions se couchassent, Rahab monta vers eux sur le toit

⁸והמה טרם ישכבון והיא עלתה עליהם על הגג׃

⁹and she said unto the men, I know that Jehovah hath given you the land, and that the fear of you is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.

⁹et leur dit: L'Eternel, je le sais, vous a donné ce pays, la terreur que vous inspirez nous a saisis, et tous les habitants du pays tremblent devant vous.

⁹ותאמר אל האנשים ידעתי כי נתן יהוה לכם את הארץ וכי נפלה אימתכם עלינו וכי נמגו כל ישבי הארץ מפניכם׃

¹⁰For we have heard how Jehovah dried up the water of the Red Sea before you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond the Jordan, unto Sihon and to Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.

¹⁰Car nous avons appris comment, à votre sortie d'Egypte, l'Eternel a mis à sec devant vous les eaux de la mer Rouge, et comment vous avez traité les deux rois des Amoréens au delà du Jourdain, Sihon et Og, que vous avez dévoués par interdit.

¹⁰כי שמענו את אשר הוביש יהוה את מי ים סוף מפניכם בצאתכם ממצרים ואשר עשיתם לשני מלכי האמרי אשר בעבר הירדן לסיחן ולעוג אשר החרמתם אותם׃

¹¹And as soon as we had heard it, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Jehovah your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.

¹¹Nous l'avons appris, et nous avons perdu courage, et tous nos esprits sont abattus à votre aspect; car c'est l'Eternel, votre Dieu, qui est Dieu en haut dans les cieux et en bas sur la terre.

¹¹ונשמע וימס לבבנו ולא קמה עוד רוח באיש מפניכם כי יהוה אלהיכם הוא אלהים בשמים ממעל ועל הארץ מתחת׃

¹²Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by Jehovah, since I have dealt kindly with you, that ye also will deal kindly with my father's house, and give me a true token;

¹²Et maintenant, je vous prie, jurez-moi par l'Eternel que vous aurez pour la maison de mon père la même bonté que j'ai eue pour vous. Donnez-moi l'assurance

¹²ועתה השבעו נא לי ביהוה כי עשיתי עמכם חסד ועשיתם גם אתם עם בית אבי חסד ונתתם לי אות אמת׃

¹³and that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and will deliver our lives from death.

¹³que vous laisserez vivre mon père, ma mère, mes frères, mes soeurs, et tous ceux qui leur appartiennent, et que vous nous sauverez de la mort.

¹³והחיתם את אבי ואת אמי ואת אחי ואת אחותי ואת כל אשר להם והצלתם את נפשתינו ממות׃

¹⁴And the men said unto her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business; and it shall be, when Jehovah giveth us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.

¹⁴Ces hommes lui répondirent: Nous sommes prêts à mourir pour vous, si vous ne divulguez pas ce qui nous concerne; et quand l'Eternel nous donnera le pays, nous agirons envers toi avec bonté et fidélité.

¹⁴ויאמרו לה האנשים נפשנו תחתיכם למות אם לא תגידו את דברנו זה והיה בתת יהוה לנו את הארץ ועשינו עמך חסד ואמת׃

¹⁵Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the side of the wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.

¹⁵Elle les fit descendre avec une corde par la fenêtre, car la maison qu'elle habitait était sur la muraille de la ville.

¹⁵ותורדם בחבל בעד החלון כי ביתה בקיר החומה ובחומה היא יושבת׃

¹⁶And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers light upon you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.

¹⁶Elle leur dit: Allez du côté de la montagne, de peur que ceux qui vous poursuivent ne vous rencontrent; cachez-vous là pendant trois jours, jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient de retour; après cela, vous suivrez votre chemin.

¹⁶ותאמר להם ההרה לכו פן יפגעו בכם הרדפים ונחבתם שמה שלשת ימים עד שוב הרדפים ואחר תלכו לדרככם׃

¹⁷And the men said unto her, We will be guiltless of this thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.

¹⁷Ces hommes lui dirent: Voici de quelle manière nous serons quittes du serment que tu nous as fait faire.

¹⁷ויאמרו אליה האנשים נקים אנחנו משבעתך הזה אשר השבעתנו׃

¹⁸Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt gather unto thee into the house thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household.

¹⁸A notre entrée dans le pays, attache ce cordon de fil cramoisi à la fenêtre par laquelle tu nous fais descendre, et recueille auprès de toi dans la maison ton père, ta mère, tes frères, et toute la famille de ton père.

¹⁸הנה אנחנו באים בארץ את תקות חוט השני הזה תקשרי בחלון אשר הורדתנו בו ואת אביך ואת אמך ואת אחיך ואת כל בית אביך תאספי אליך הביתה׃

¹⁹And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we shall be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.

¹⁹Si quelqu'un d'eux sort de la porte de ta maison pour aller dehors, son sang retombera sur sa tête, et nous en serons innocents; mais si on met la main sur l'un quelconque de ceux qui seront avec toi dans la maison, son sang retombera sur notre tête.

¹⁹והיה כל אשר יצא מדלתי ביתך החוצה דמו בראשו ואנחנו נקים וכל אשר יהיה אתך בבית דמו בראשנו אם יד תהיה בו׃

²⁰But if thou utter this our business, then we shall be guiltless of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.

²⁰Et si tu divulgues ce qui nous concerne, nous serons quittes du serment que tu nous as fait faire.

²⁰ואם תגידי את דברנו זה והיינו נקים משבעתך אשר השבעתנו׃

²¹And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

²¹Elle répondit: Qu'il en soit selon vos paroles. Elle prit ainsi congé d'eux, et ils s'en allèrent. Et elle attacha le cordon de cramoisi à la fenêtre.

²¹ותאמר כדבריכם כן הוא ותשלחם וילכו ותקשר את תקות השני בחלון׃

²²And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.

²²Ils partirent, et arrivèrent à la montagne, où ils restèrent trois jours, jusqu'à ce que ceux qui les poursuivaient fussent de retour. Ceux qui les poursuivaient les cherchèrent par tout le chemin, mais ils ne les trouvèrent pas.

²²וילכו ויבאו ההרה וישבו שם שלשת ימים עד שבו הרדפים ויבקשו הרדפים בכל הדרך ולא מצאו׃

²³Then the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun; and they told him all that had befallen them.

²³Les deux hommes s'en retournèrent, descendirent de la montagne, et passèrent le Jourdain. Ils vinrent auprès de Josué, fils de Nun, et lui racontèrent tout ce qui leur était arrivé.

²³וישבו שני האנשים וירדו מההר ויעברו ויבאו אל יהושע בן נון ויספרו לו את כל המצאות אותם׃

²⁴And they said unto Joshua, Truly Jehovah hath delivered into our hands all the land; and moreover all the inhabitants of the land do melt away before us.

²⁴Ils dirent à Josué: Certainement, l'Eternel a livré tout le pays entre nos mains, et même tous les habitants du pays tremblent devant nous.

²⁴ויאמרו אל יהושע כי נתן יהוה בידנו את כל הארץ וגם נמגו כל ישבי הארץ מפנינו׃
