²The noise of the whip, and the noise of the rattling of wheels, and prancing horses, and bounding chariots,

²On entend le bruit du fouet, Le bruit des roues, Le galop des chevaux, Le roulement des chars.

²קול שוט וקול רעש אופן וסוס דהר ומרכבה מרקדה׃

³the horseman mounting, and the flashing sword, and the glittering spear, and a multitude of slain, and a great heap of corpses, and there is no end of the bodies; they stumble upon their bodies;-

³Les cavaliers s'élancent, l'épée étincelle, la lance brille... Une multitude de blessés!... une foule de cadavres!... Des morts à l'infini!... On tombe sur les morts!...

³פרש מעלה ולהב חרב וברק חנית ורב חלל וכבד פגר ואין קצה לגויה יכשלו בגויתם׃

⁴because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the well-favored harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts.

⁴C'est à cause des nombreuses prostitutions de la prostituée, Pleine d'attraits, habile enchanteresse, Qui vendait les nations par ses prostitutions Et les peuples par ses enchantements.

⁴מרב זנוני זונה טובת חן בעלת כשפים המכרת גוים בזנוניה ומשפחות בכשפיה׃

⁵Behold, I am against thee, saith Jehovah of hosts, and I will uncover thy skirts upon thy face; and I will show the nations thy nakedness, and the kingdoms thy shame.

⁵Voici, j'en veux à toi, dit l'Eternel des armées, Je relèverai tes pans jusque sur ton visage, Je montrerai ta nudité aux nations, Et ta honte aux royaumes.

⁵הנני אליך נאם יהוה צבאות וגליתי שוליך על פניך והראיתי גוים מערך וממלכות קלונך׃

⁶And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and will set thee as a gazing-stock.

⁶Je jetterai sur toi des impuretés, je t'avilirai, Et je te donnerai en spectacle.

⁶והשלכתי עליך שקצים ונבלתיך ושמתיך כראי׃

⁷And it shall come to pass, that all they that look upon thee shall flee from thee, and say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for thee?

⁷Tous ceux qui te verront fuiront loin de toi, Et l'on dira: Ninive est détruite! Qui la plaindra? Où te chercherai-je des consolateurs?

⁷והיה כל ראיך ידוד ממך ואמר שדדה נינוה מי ינוד לה מאין אבקש מנחמים לך׃

⁸Art thou better than No-amon, that was situate among the rivers, that had the waters round about her; whose rampart was the sea, [and] her wall was of the sea?

⁸Es-tu meilleure que No-Amon, Qui était assise au milieu des fleuves, Entourée par les eaux, Ayant la mer pour rempart, La mer pour murailles?

⁸התיטבי מנא אמון הישבה ביארים מים סביב לה אשר חיל ים מים חומתה׃

¹⁰גם היא לגלה הלכה בשבי גם עלליה ירטשו בראש כל חוצות ועל נכבדיה ידו גורל וכל גדוליה רתקו בזקים׃

¹¹Thou also shalt be drunken; thou shalt be hid; thou also shalt seek a stronghold because of the enemy.

¹¹Toi aussi, tu seras enivrée, tu te cacheras; Toi aussi, tu chercheras un refuge contre l'ennemi.

¹¹גם את תשכרי תהי נעלמה גם את תבקשי מעוז מאויב׃

¹²All thy fortresses shall be [like] fig-trees with the first-ripe figs: if they be shaken, they fall into the mouth of the eater.

¹²Toutes tes forteresses Sont des figuiers avec les primeurs; Quand on les secoue, Elles tombent dans la bouche de qui veut les manger.

¹²כל מבצריך תאנים עם בכורים אם ינועו ונפלו על פי אוכל׃

¹³Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are women; the gates of thy land are set wide open unto thine enemies: the fire hath devoured thy bars.

¹³Voici, ton peuple, ce sont des femmes au milieu de toi; Les portes de ton pays s'ouvrent à tes ennemis; Le feu consume tes verrous.

¹³הנה עמך נשים בקרבך לאיביך פתוח נפתחו שערי ארצך אכלה אש בריחיך׃

¹⁴Draw thee water for the siege; strengthen thy fortresses; go into the clay, and tread the mortar; make strong the brickkiln.

¹⁴Puise de l'eau pour le siège! Répare tes forteresses! Entre dans la boue, foule l'argile! Rétablis le four à briques!

¹⁴מי מצור שאבי לך חזקי מבצריך באי בטיט ורמסי בחמר החזיקי מלבן׃

¹⁵There shall the fire devour thee; the sword shall cut thee off; it shall devour thee like the canker-worm: make thyself many as the canker-worm; make thyself many as the locust.

¹⁵Là, le feu te dévorera, L'épée t'exterminera, Te dévorera comme des sauterelles. Entasse-toi comme les sauterelles! Entasse-toi comme les sauterelles!

¹⁵שם תאכלך אש תכריתך חרב תאכלך כילק התכבד כילק התכבדי כארבה׃

¹⁶Thou hast multiplied thy merchants above the stars of heaven: the canker-worm ravageth, and fleeth away.

¹⁶Tes marchands, plus nombreux Que les étoiles du ciel, Sont comme la sauterelle qui ouvre les ailes et s'envole.

¹⁶הרבית רכליך מכוכבי השמים ילק פשט ויעף׃

¹⁷Thy princes are as the locusts, and thy marshals as the swarms of grasshoppers, which encamp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.

¹⁷Tes princes sont comme les sauterelles, Tes chefs comme une multitude de sauterelles, Qui se posent sur les haies au temps de la froidure: Le soleil paraît, elles s'envolent, Et l'on ne connaît plus le lieu où elles étaient.

¹⁷מנזריך כארבה וטפסריך כגוב גבי החונים בגדרות ביום קרה שמש זרחה ונודד ולא נודע מקומו אים׃

¹⁸Thy shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria; thy nobles are at rest; thy people are scattered upon the mountains, and there is none to gather them.

¹⁸Tes bergers sommeillent, roi d'Assyrie, Tes vaillants hommes reposent; Ton peuple est dispersé sur les montagnes, Et nul ne le rassemble.

¹⁸נמו רעיך מלך אשור ישכנו אדיריך נפשו עמך על ההרים ואין מקבץ׃

¹⁹There is no assuaging of thy hurt: thy wound is grievous: all that hear the report of thee clap their hands over thee; for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?

¹⁹Il n'y a point de remède à ta blessure, Ta plaie est mortelle. Tous ceux qui entendront parler de toi Battront des mains sur toi; Car quel est celui que ta méchanceté n'a pas atteint?

¹⁹אין כהה לשברך נחלה מכתך כל שמעי שמעך תקעו כף עליך כי על מי לא עברה רעתך תמיד׃
