¹And the ark of Jehovah was in the country of the Philistines seven months.

¹Setelah Peti Perjanjian TUHAN berada di Filistin tujuh bulan lamanya,

²And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do with the ark of Jehovah? show us wherewith we shall sent it to its place.

²orang Filistin memanggil para imam dan para tukang sihir lalu bertanya, "Peti Perjanjian TUHAN itu harus kita apakan? Jika kita kembalikan ke tempatnya, bagaimana caranya?"

³And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but by all means return him a trespass-offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.

³Lalu jawab mereka, "Peti Perjanjian Allah Israel itu jangan kamu kembalikan begitu saja, tetapi harus disertai hadiah untuk tebusan dosamu. Dengan demikian kamu akan disembuhkan, dan kamu akan tahu mengapa Allah Israel itu terus-menerus menghukum kamu."

⁴Then said they, What shall be the trespass-offering which we shall return to him? And they said, Five golden tumors, and five golden mice, [according to] the number of the lords of the Philistines; for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.

⁴"Tebusan apa yang harus kita berikan kepada-Nya?" tanya orang-orang itu. Jawab para imam itu, "Lima benjolan emas dan lima tikus emas, sesuai dengan jumlah raja-raja Filistin. Bukankah bencana berupa benjol-benjol dan tikus juga yang telah menimpa kamu semua, baik rakyat maupun raja?

⁵Wherefore ye shall make images of your tumors, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.

⁵Jadi, kamu harus membuat tiruan dari benjol-benjol dan dari tikus yang sedang mengganas di negerimu. Dengan demikian kamu memberi penghormatan kepada Allah Israel. Mungkin Dia akan berhenti menghukum kamu, dan dewa-dewa serta tanahmu.

⁶Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? When he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?

⁶Apa gunanya kamu berkeras kepala seperti raja dan orang Mesir dahulu? Jangan lupa bagaimana Allah mempermain-mainkan mereka, sampai mereka jera dan orang Israel itu mereka biarkan meninggalkan Mesir.

⁷Now therefore take and prepare you a new cart, and two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke; and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them;

⁷Sebab itu, siapkanlah sebuah pedati yang baru dengan dua ekor sapi yang sedang menyusui, dan yang belum pernah dipakai untuk menarik pedati. Pasanglah kedua sapi itu pada pedati, dan giringlah anak-anak sapi itu kembali ke dalam kandang.

⁸and take the ark of Jehovah, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass-offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.

⁸Kemudian, ambillah Peti Perjanjian TUHAN, naikkanlah ke atas pedati, dan letakkan di sebelahnya kotak yang berisi benda-benda emas yang harus kamu persembahkan kepada-Nya sebagai tebusan dosamu. Biarlah pedati dan sapi itu berjalan dengan sendirinya.

⁹And see; if it goeth up by the way of its own border to Beth-shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us; it was a chance that happened to us.

⁹Perhatikanlah jalannya; jika Peti Perjanjian itu dibawa ke arah negerinya sendiri, yaitu kota Bet-Semes, itu berarti bahwa Allah orang Israellah yang telah mendatangkan celaka yang hebat itu kepada kita. Tetapi jika pedati itu tidak menuju ke sana, kita akan tahu bahwa musibah itu bukan dari Allah Israel, melainkan kebetulan saja."

¹⁰And the men did so, and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home;

¹⁰Orang-orang itu menurut; mereka mengambil dua ekor sapi yang sedang menyusui, lalu dipasang pada pedati, sedangkan anak-anak sapi itu dikurung di dalam kandang.

¹¹and they put the ark of Jehovah upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their tumors.

¹¹Lalu Peti Perjanjian itu dinaikkan ke atas pedati, juga kotak yang berisi tikus emas dan tiruan benjol-benjol itu.

¹²And the kine took the straight way by the way to Beth-shemesh; they went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth-shemesh.

¹²Sapi-sapi itu berjalan langsung ke arah Bet-Semes; binatang itu melenguh sambil berjalan terus, tanpa menyimpang ke kiri atau ke kanan dari jalan raya. Kelima raja Filistin itu terus mengikutinya sampai ke perbatasan Bet-Semes.

¹³And they of Beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley; and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.

¹³Pada waktu itu penduduk Bet-Semes sedang panen gandum di lembah. Ketika mereka melihat Peti Perjanjian itu, dengan gembira mereka menyongsongnya.

¹⁴And the cart came into the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered up the kine for a burnt-offering unto Jehovah.

¹⁴Pedati itu berhenti di dekat sebuah batu besar di ladang Yosua, seorang penduduk Bet-Semes. Penduduk kota itu membelah-belah kayu pedati itu lalu memotong kedua ekor sapi itu untuk kurban bakaran kepada TUHAN.

¹⁵And the Levites took down the ark of Jehovah, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt-offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto Jehovah.

¹⁵Kemudian orang-orang Lewi menurunkan Peti Perjanjian TUHAN dan kotak yang berisi benda-benda emas itu, lalu meletakkannya di atas batu besar itu. Sesudah itu penduduk Bet-Semes mempersembahkan kurban bakaran dan kurban-kurban lainnya kepada TUHAN.

¹⁶And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.

¹⁶Ketika kelima raja Filistin itu melihat semuanya itu pulanglah mereka ke Ekron pada hari itu juga.

¹⁷And these are the golden tumors which the Philistines returned for a trespass-offering unto Jehovah: for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Ashkelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one;

¹⁷Dengan demikian orang Filistin sudah mengirim kepada TUHAN persembahan penebus dosa untuk penduduk lima kota yang diperintah oleh lima raja Filistin. Kota-kota itu ialah: Asdod, Gaza, Askelon, Gat dan Ekron. Di antaranya ada yang berbenteng, ada yang tidak. Setiap kota itu mengirim satu benjolan emas dan satu tikus emas. Bukti dari kejadian itu ialah batu besar tempat mereka meletakkan Peti Perjanjian TUHAN. Sampai hari ini pun batu itu masih ada di ladang Yosua, orang Bet-Semes itu.

¹⁸and the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fortified cities and of country villages, even unto the great stone, whereon they set down the ark of Jehovah, [which stone remaineth] unto this day in the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite.

¹⁸(6:17)

¹⁹And he smote of the men of Beth-shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of Jehovah, he smote of the people seventy men, [and] fifty thousand men; and the people mourned, because Jehovah had smitten the people with a great slaughter.

¹⁹Tetapi karena orang-orang Bet-Semes itu menjenguk ke dalam Peti Perjanjian TUHAN, tujuh puluh orang di antara mereka dibunuh oleh TUHAN. Lalu rakyat berkabung sebab TUHAN menimpa mereka dengan musibah yang begitu besar.

²⁰And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before Jehovah, this holy God? and to whom shall he go up from us?

²⁰Lalu penduduk Bet-Semes berkata, "Siapakah yang bisa tahan di hadapan TUHAN, Allah Yang Suci itu? Ke manakah peti itu harus kita antarkan supaya jauh dari kita?"

²¹And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim, saying, The Philistines have brought back the ark of Jehovah; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.

²¹Lalu mereka mengirim utusan kepada penduduk Kiryat-Yearim dengan pesan sebagai berikut, "Orang Filistin telah mengembalikan Peti Perjanjian TUHAN. Datanglah dan bawalah peti itu ke tempatmu."
