1The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father; But a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.
1Inilah petuah-petuah Salomo: Anak yang bijaksana adalah kebanggaan ayahnya; anak yang bodoh menyusahkan hati ibunya.
2Treasures of wickedness profit nothing; But righteousness delivereth from death.
2Kekayaan yang didapat dengan curang tidak memberi keuntungan; sebaliknya, kejujuran akan menyelamatkan.
3Jehovah will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish; But he thrusteth away the desire of the wicked.
3TUHAN tak akan membiarkan orang baik kelaparan; tetapi Ia menghalang-halangi orang jahat supaya orang itu tidak memperoleh yang diinginkannya.
4He becometh poor that worketh with a slack hand; But the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
4Orang malas akan jatuh miskin; orang yang rajin akan menjadi kaya.
5He that gathereth in summer is a wise son; [But] he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.
5Orang bijaksana mengumpulkan panen pada musimnya, tapi orang yang tidur saja pada musim panen, mendatangkan malu pada dirinya.
6Blessings are upon the head of the righteous; But violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.
6Orang baik akan mendapat berkat. Kekejaman tersembunyi di balik kata-kata orang jahat.
7The memory of the righteous is blessed; But the name of the wicked shall rot.
7Kenangan akan orang baik merupakan berkat, tetapi orang jahat segera dilupakan.
8The wise in heart will receive commandments; But a prating fool shall fall.
8Orang yang pandai, suka menerima nasihat; orang yang bicaranya bodoh akan sesat.
9He that walketh uprightly walketh surely; But he that perverteth his ways shall be known.
9Orang jujur, hidupnya aman; orang yang menipu akan ketahuan.
10He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow; But a prating fool shall fall.
10Siapa menyembunyikan kebenaran, menimbulkan kesusahan; siapa yang mengeritik dengan terang-terangan, mengusahakan kesejahteraan.
11The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life; But violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.
11Tutur kata orang baik membuat hidup bahagia, tetapi di balik kata-kata orang jahat tersembunyi hati yang keji.
12Hatred stirreth up strifes; But love covereth all transgressions.
12Kebencian menimbulkan pertengkaran; cinta kasih mengampuni semua kesalahan.
13In the lips of him that hath discernment wisdom is found; But a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.
13Orang yang pikirannya tajam mengucapkan kata-kata bijaksana; orang bodoh perlu didera.
14Wise men lay up knowledge; But the mouth of the foolish is a present destruction.
14Orang bijaksana menghimpun pengetahuan; jika orang bodoh berbicara, ia memancing kecelakaan.
15The rich man's wealth is his strong city: The destruction of the poor is their poverty.
15Kekayaan melindungi si kaya, kemelaratan menghancurkan orang miskin.
16The labor of the righteous [tendeth] to life; The increase of the wicked, to sin.
16Kalau berbuat baik, upahnya ialah hidup bahagia; kalau berbuat dosa, akibatnya lebih banyak dosa.
17He is in the way of life that heedeth correction; But he that forsaketh reproof erreth.
17Siapa mengindahkan teguran akan hidup sejahtera, siapa enggan mengakui kesalahan berada dalam bahaya.
18He that hideth hatred is of lying lips; And he that uttereth a slander is a fool.
18Orang yang menyembunyikan kebencian adalah penipu. Orang yang menyebarkan fitnah adalah dungu.
19In the multitude of words there wanteth not transgression; But he that refraineth his lips doeth wisely.
19Makin banyak bicara, makin banyak kemungkinan berdosa; orang yang dapat mengendalikan lidahnya adalah bijaksana.
20The tongue of the righteous is [as] choice silver: The heart of the wicked is little worth.
20Perkataan orang yang baik bagaikan perak asli; buah pikiran orang yang jahat tidak berarti.
21The lips of the righteous feed many; But the foolish die for lack of understanding.
21Perkataan orang yang baik, merupakan berkat bagi banyak orang; kebodohan orang bodoh membunuh dirinya sendiri.
22The blessing of Jehovah, it maketh rich; And he addeth no sorrow therewith.
22Karena berkat TUHAN sajalah orang menjadi kaya; kerja keras tak dapat menambah harta.
23It is as sport to a fool to do wickedness; And [so is] wisdom to a man of understanding.
23Orang bodoh senang berbuat salah; orang bijaksana gemar mencari hikmat.
24The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him; And the desire of the righteous shall be granted.
24Orang tulus mendapat apa yang diinginkannya; orang jahat mendapat apa yang paling ditakutinya.
25When the whirlwind passeth, the wicked is no more; But the righteous is an everlasting foundation.
25Jika topan melanda, lenyaplah orang jahat; tetapi orang jujur tetap teguh selamanya.
26As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, So is the sluggard to them that send him.
26Jangan menyuruh orang malas, ia hanya menjengkelkan saja, seperti cuka melinukan gigi atau asap memedihkan mata.
27The fear of Jehovah prolongeth days; But the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
27Hormatilah TUHAN, maka engkau akan hidup lama; orang jahat mati sebelum waktunya.
28The hope of the righteous [shall be] gladness; But the expectation of the wicked shall perish.
28Harapan orang baik menjadikan dia bahagia; harapan orang jahat kosong belaka.
29The way of Jehovah is a stronghold to the upright; But it is a destruction to the workers of iniquity.
29TUHAN melindungi orang jujur, tetapi membinasakan orang yang berbuat jahat.
30The righteous shall never be removed; But the wicked shall not dwell in the land.
30Orang tulus akan hidup aman sejahtera; orang jahat tidak akan tinggal di tanah pusaka.
31The mouth of the righteous bringeth forth wisdom; But the perverse tongue shall be cut off.
31Orang tulus menuturkan kata-kata bijaksana; orang jahat akan dibungkamkan mulutnya.
32The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable; But the mouth of the wicked [speaketh] perverseness.
32Kata-kata orang tulus menyenangkan hati; kata-kata orang jahat selalu menyakiti.
