¹The word that Jehovah spake concerning Babylon, concerning the land of the Chaldeans, by Jeremiah the prophet.

¹主が預言者エレミヤによって語られたバビロンとカルデヤびとの地の事についての言葉。

²Declare ye among the nations and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is put to shame, Merodach is dismayed; her images are put to shame, her idols are dismayed.

²「国々のうちに告げ、また触れ示せよ、旗を立てて、隠すことなく触れ示して言え、『バビロンは取られ、ベルははずかしめられ、メロダクは砕かれ、その像ははずかしめられ、その偶像は砕かれる』と。

³For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they are fled, they are gone, both man and beast.

³それは、北の方から一つの国民がきて、これを攻め、その地を荒して、住む人もないようにするからである。人も獣もみな逃げ去ってしまう。

⁴In those days, and in that time, saith Jehovah, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together; they shall go on their way weeping, and shall seek Jehovah their God.

⁴主は言われる、その日その時、イスラエルの民とユダの民は共に帰ってくる。彼らは嘆きながら帰ってくる。そしてその神、主を求める。

⁵They shall inquire concerning Zion with their faces thitherward, [saying], Come ye, and join yourselves to Jehovah in an everlasting covenant that shall not be forgotten.

⁵彼らは顔をシオンに向けて、その道を問い、『さあ、われわれは、永遠に忘れられることのない契約を結んで主に連なろう』と言う。

⁶My people have been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray; they have turned them away on the mountains; they have gone from mountain to hill; they have forgotten their resting-place.

⁶わたしの民は迷える羊の群れである、その牧者がこれをいざなって、山に踏み迷わせたので、山から丘へと行きめぐり、その休む所を忘れた。

⁷All that found them have devoured them; and their adversaries said, We are not guilty, because they have sinned against Jehovah, the habitation of righteousness, even Jehovah, the hope of their fathers.

⁷これに会う者はみなこれを食べた。その敵は言った、『われわれに罪はない。彼らがそのまことのすみかである主、先祖たちの希望であった主に対して罪を犯したのだ』と。

⁸Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the he-goats before the flocks.

⁸バビロンのうちから逃げよ。カルデヤびとの地から出よ。群れの前に行く雄やぎのようにせよ。

⁹For, lo, I will stir up and cause to come up against Babylon a company of great nations from the north country; and they shall set themselves in array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of an expert mighty man; none shall return in vain.

⁹見よ、わたしは大きい国々を起し集めて、北の地からバビロンに攻めこさせる。彼らはこれに向かって勢ぞろいをし、これをその所から取る。彼らの矢はむなしく帰らない老練な勇士のようである。

¹⁰And Chaldea shall be a prey: all that prey upon her shall be satisfied, saith Jehovah.

¹⁰カルデヤは人にかすめられる。これをかすめる者はみな飽くことができると、主は言われる。

¹¹Because ye are glad, because ye rejoice, O ye that plunder my heritage, because ye are wanton as a heifer that treadeth out [the grain], and neigh as strong horses;

¹¹わたしの嗣業をかすめる者どもよ、あなたがたは喜び楽しみ、雌の子牛のように草に戯れ、雄馬のように、いなないているが、

¹²your mother shall be utterly put to shame; she that bare you shall be confounded: behold, she shall be the hindermost of the nations, a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.

¹²あなたがたの母はいたくはずかしめられ、あなたがたを産んだ者は恥をこうむる。見よ、彼女は国々のうちの最もあとなるものとなり、かわいた砂原の荒野となる。

¹³Because of the wrath of Jehovah she shall not be inhabited, but she shall be wholly desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues.

¹³主の怒りによって、ここに住む者はなく、完全に荒れ地となる。バビロンのかたわらを通る者は、みなその傷を見て驚き、かつあざ笑う。

¹⁴Set yourselves in array against Babylon round about, all ye that bend the bow; shoot at her, spare no arrows: for she hath sinned against Jehovah.

¹⁴あなたがたすべて弓を張る者よ、バビロンの周囲に勢ぞろいして、これを攻め、矢を惜しまずに、これを射よ、彼女が主に罪を犯したからだ。

¹⁵Shout against her round about: she hath submitted herself; her bulwarks are fallen, her walls are thrown down; for it is the vengeance of Jehovah: take vengeance upon her; as she hath done, do unto her.

¹⁵その周囲に叫び声をあげよ、彼女は降伏した。そのとりでは倒れ、その城壁はくずれた、主があだをかえされたからだ。彼女に報復せよ、彼女がおこなったように、これに行え。

¹⁶Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him that handleth the sickle in the time of harvest: for fear of the oppressing sword they shall turn every one to his people, and they shall flee every one to his own land.

¹⁶種まく者と、刈入れどきに、かまを取る者をバビロンに絶やせ。滅ぼす者のつるぎを恐れて、人はおのおの自分の民の所に帰り、そのふるさとに逃げて行く。

¹⁷Israel is a hunted sheep; the lions have driven him away: first, the king of Assyria devoured him; and now at last Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones.

¹⁷イスラエルは、ししに追われて散った羊である。初めにアッスリヤの王がこれを食い、そして今はついにバビロンの王ネブカデレザルがその骨をかじった。

¹⁸Therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I have punished the king of Assyria.

¹⁸それゆえ万軍の主、イスラエルの神は、こう言われる、見よ、わたしはアッスリヤの王を罰したように、バビロンの王とその国に罰を下す。

¹⁹And I will bring Israel again to his pasture, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied upon the hills of Ephraim and in Gilead.

¹⁹わたしはイスラエルを再びその牧場に帰らせる。彼はカルメルとバシャンで草を食べる。またエフライムの山とギレアデでその望みが満たされる。

²⁰In those days, and in that time, saith Jehovah, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I leave as a remnant.

²⁰主は言われる、その日その時には、イスラエルのとがを探しても見当らず、ユダの罪を探してもない。それはわたしが残しておく人々を、ゆるすからである。

²¹Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: slay and utterly destroy after them, saith Jehovah, and do according to all that I have commanded thee.

²¹主は言われる、上って行って、メラタイムの地を攻め、ペコデの民を攻め、彼らを殺して全く滅ぼし、わたしがあなたがたに命じたことを皆、行いなさい。

²²A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction.

²²その地に、いくさの叫びと、大いなる滅びがある。

²³How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations!

²³ああ、全地を砕いた鎚はついに折れ砕ける。ああ、バビロンはついに国々のうちの恐るべき見ものとなる。

²⁴I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast striven against Jehovah.

²⁴バビロンよ、わたしは、おまえを捕えるためにわなをかけたが、おまえはそれにかかった。そしておまえはそれを知らなかった。おまえは主に敵したので、尋ね出され、捕えられた。

²⁵Jehovah hath opened his armory, and hath brought forth the weapons of his indignation; for the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, hath a work [to do] in the land of the Chaldeans.

²⁵主は武器の倉を開いてその怒りの武器を取り出された。主なる万軍の神が、カルデヤびとの地に事を行われるからである。

²⁶Come against her from the utmost border; open her store-houses; cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly; let nothing of her be left.

²⁶あらゆる方面からきて、これを攻め、その穀倉を開き、これを穀物の山のように積み上げ、完全に滅ぼし尽し、そこに残る者のないようにせよ。

²⁷Slay all her bullocks; let them go down to the slaughter: woe unto them! for their day is come, the time of their visitation.

²⁷その雄牛をことごとく殺せ、それを、ほふり場に下らせよ。それらのものはわざわいだ、その日、その罰を受ける時がきたからだ。

²⁸The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of Jehovah our God, the vengeance of his temple.

²⁸聞けよ、バビロンの地から逃げ、のがれてきた者の声がする。われわれの神、主の報復、その宮の報復の事をシオンに告げ示す。

²⁹Call together the archers against Babylon, all them that bend the bow; encamp against her round about; let none thereof escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her; for she hath been proud against Jehovah, against the Holy One of Israel.

²⁹弓を張る射手をことごとく呼び集めて、バビロンを攻めよ。その周囲に陣を敷け。ひとりも逃がすな。そのしわざにしたがってバビロンに報い、これがおこなった所にしたがってこれに行え。彼がイスラエルの聖者である主に向かって高慢にふるまったからだ。

³⁰Therefore shall her young men fall in her streets, and all her men of war shall be brought to silence in that day, saith Jehovah.

³⁰それゆえ、その日、若い者は、広場に倒れ、兵士はみな絶やされると主は言われる。

³¹Behold, I am against thee, O thou proud one, saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts; for thy day is come, the time that I will visit thee.

³¹主なる万軍の神は言われる、高ぶる者よ、見よ、わたしはおまえの敵となる、あなたの日、わたしがおまえを罰する時が来た。

³²And the proud one shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up; and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all that are round about him.

³²高ぶる者はつまずき倒れる、これを助け起すものはない。わたしはその町々に火を燃やして、その周囲の者をことごとく焼き尽す。

³³Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: The children of Israel and the children of Judah are oppressed together; and all that took them captive hold them fast; they refuse to let them go.

³³万軍の主はこう言われる、イスラエルの民とユダの民は共にしえたげられている。彼らをとりこにした者はみな彼らを固く守って釈放することを拒む。

³⁴Their Redeemer is strong; Jehovah of hosts is his name: he will thoroughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the earth, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.

³⁴彼らをあがなう者は強く、その名は万軍の主といわれる。彼は必ず彼らの訴えをただし、この地に安きを与えるが、バビロンに住む者には不安を与えられる。

³⁵A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith Jehovah, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men.

³⁵主は言われる、カルデヤびとの上とバビロンに住む者の上、そのつかさたち、その知者たちの上につるぎが臨む。

³⁶A sword is upon the boasters, and they shall become fools; a sword is upon her mighty men, and they shall be dismayed.

³⁶占い師の上につるぎが臨み、彼らは愚か者となる。その勇士の上につるぎが臨み、彼らは滅ぼされる。

³⁷A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures, and they shall be robbed.

³⁷その馬の上と、その車の上につるぎが臨み、またそのうちにあるすべての雇兵の上に臨み、彼らは女のようになる。その財宝の上につるぎが臨み、それはかすめられる。

³⁸A drought is upon her waters, and they shall be dried up; for it is a land of graven images, and they are mad over idols.

³⁸その水の上に、ひでりが来て、それはかわく。それは、この地が偶像の地であって、人々が偶像に心が狂っているからだ。

³⁹Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wolves shall dwell there, and the ostriches shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation.

³⁹それゆえ、野の獣と山犬とは共にバビロンにおり、だちょうもそこに住む。しかし、いつまでもその地に住む人はなく、世々ここに住む人はない。

⁴⁰As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbor cities thereof, saith Jehovah, so shall no man dwell there, neither shall any son of man sojourn therein.

⁴⁰主は言われる、神がソドムとゴモラと、その隣の町々を滅ぼされたように、そこに住む人はなく、そこに宿る人の子はない。

⁴¹Behold, a people cometh from the north; and a great nation and many kings shall be stirred up from the uttermost parts of the earth.

⁴¹見よ、一つの民が北の方から来る。大いなる国と多くの王が地の果から立ち上がっている。

⁴²They lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roareth like the sea; and they ride upon horses, every one set in array, as a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon.

⁴²彼らは弓と、やりを取る。残忍で、あわれみがなく、その響きは海の鳴りとどろくようである。バビロンの娘よ、彼らは馬に乗り、いくさびとのように身をよろって、あなたを攻める。

⁴³The king of Babylon hath heard the tidings of them, and his hands wax feeble: anguish hath taken hold of him, [and] pangs as of a woman in travail.

⁴³バビロンの王はそのうわさを聞いて、その手は弱り、子を産む女に臨むような痛みと苦しみに迫られた。

⁴⁴Behold, [the enemy] shall come up like a lion from the pride of the Jordan against the strong habitation: for I will suddenly make them run away from it; and whoso is chosen, him will I appoint over it: for who is like me? and who will appoint me a time? and who is the shepherd that can stand before me?

⁴⁴見よ、ししがヨルダンの密林から上ってきて、じょうぶな羊のおりを襲うように、わたしは、たちまち彼らをそこから逃げ去らせる。そしてわたしの選ぶ者をその上に立てる。だれかわたしのような者があるであろうか。だれがわたしを呼びつけることができようか。どの牧者がわたしの前に立つことができようか。

⁴⁵Therefore hear ye the counsel of Jehovah, that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely they shall drag them away, [even] the little ones of the flock; surely he shall make their habitation desolate over them.

⁴⁵それゆえ、バビロンに対して主が立てた計りごとと、カルデヤびとの地に対してしようとする事を聞くがよい。彼らの群れのうちの小さい者は、かならず引かれて行く。彼らのおりのものも必ずその終りを見て恐れる。バビロンが取られたとの声によって地は震い、その叫びは国々のうちに聞える」。

⁴⁶At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth trembleth, and the cry is heard among the nations.
