1And after these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Judaea, because the Jews sought to kill him.
1そののち、イエスはガリラヤを巡回しておられた。ユダヤ人たちが自分を殺そうとしていたので、ユダヤを巡回しようとはされなかった。
2Now the feast of the Jews, the feast of tabernacles, was at hand.
2時に、ユダヤ人の仮庵の祭が近づいていた。
3His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may behold thy works which thou doest.
3そこで、イエスの兄弟たちがイエスに言った、「あなたがしておられるわざを弟子たちにも見せるために、ここを去りユダヤに行ってはいかがです。
4For no man doeth anything in secret, and himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou doest these things, manifest thyself to the world.
4自分を公けにあらわそうと思っている人で、隠れて仕事をするものはありません。あなたがこれらのことをするからには、自分をはっきりと世にあらわしなさい」。
5For even his brethren did not believe on him.
5こう言ったのは、兄弟たちもイエスを信じていなかったからである。
6Jesus therefore saith unto them, My time is not yet come; but your time is always ready.
6そこでイエスは彼らに言われた、「わたしの時はまだきていない。しかし、あなたがたの時はいつも備わっている。
7The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that its works are evil.
7世はあなたがたを憎み得ないが、わたしを憎んでいる。わたしが世のおこないの悪いことを、あかししているからである。
8Go ye up unto the feast: I go not up unto this feast; because my time is not yet fulfilled.
8あなたがたこそ祭に行きなさい。わたしはこの祭には行かない。わたしの時はまだ満ちていないから」。
9And having said these things unto them, he abode [still] in Galilee.
9彼らにこう言って、イエスはガリラヤにとどまっておられた。
10But when his brethren were gone up unto the feast, then went he also up, not publicly, but as it were in secret.
10しかし、兄弟たちが祭に行ったあとで、イエスも人目にたたぬように、ひそかに行かれた。
11The Jews therefore sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?
11ユダヤ人らは祭の時に、「あの人はどこにいるのか」と言って、イエスを捜していた。
12And there was much murmuring among the multitudes concerning him: some said, He is a good man; others said, Not so, but he leadeth the multitude astray.
12群衆の中に、イエスについていろいろとうわさが立った。ある人々は、「あれはよい人だ」と言い、他の人々は、「いや、あれは群衆を惑わしている」と言った。
13Yet no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.
13しかし、ユダヤ人らを恐れて、イエスのことを公然と口にする者はいなかった。
14But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.
14祭も半ばになってから、イエスは宮に上って教え始められた。
15The Jews therefore marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?
15すると、ユダヤ人たちは驚いて言った、「この人は学問をしたこともないのに、どうして律法の知識をもっているのだろう」。
16Jesus therefore answered them and said, My teaching is not mine, but his that sent me.
16そこでイエスは彼らに答えて言われた、「わたしの教はわたし自身の教ではなく、わたしをつかわされたかたの教である。
17If any man willeth to do his will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is of God, or [whether] I speak from myself.
17神のみこころを行おうと思う者であれば、だれでも、わたしの語っているこの教が神からのものか、それとも、わたし自身から出たものか、わかるであろう。
18He that speaketh from himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
18自分から出たことを語る者は、自分の栄光を求めるが、自分をつかわされたかたの栄光を求める者は真実であって、その人の内には偽りがない。
19Did not Moses give you the law, and [yet] none of you doeth the law? Why seek ye to kill me?
19モーセはあなたがたに律法を与えたではないか。それだのに、あなたがたのうちには、その律法を行う者がひとりもない。あなたがたは、なぜわたしを殺そうと思っているのか」。
20The multitude answered, Thou hast a demon: who seeketh to kill thee?
20群衆は答えた、「あなたは悪霊に取りつかれている。だれがあなたを殺そうと思っているものか」。
21Jesus answered and said unto them, I did one work, and ye all marvel because thereof.
21イエスは彼らに答えて言われた、「わたしが一つのわざをしたところ、あなたがたは皆それを見て驚いている。
22Moses hath given you circumcision (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers); and on the sabbath ye circumcise a man.
22モーセはあなたがたに割礼を命じたので、（これは、実は、モーセから始まったのではなく、先祖たちから始まったものである）あなたがたは安息日にも人に割礼を施している。
23If a man receiveth circumcision on the sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be broken; are ye wroth with me, because I made a man every whit whole on the sabbath?
23もし、モーセの律法が破られないように、安息日であっても割礼を受けるのなら、安息日に人の全身を丈夫にしてやったからといって、どうして、そんなにおこるのか。
24Judge not according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
24うわべで人をさばかないで、正しいさばきをするがよい」。
25Some therefore of them of Jerusalem said, Is not this he whom they seek to kill?
25さて、エルサレムのある人たちが言った、「この人は人々が殺そうと思っている者ではないか。
26And lo, he speaketh openly, and they say nothing unto him. Can it be that the rulers indeed know that this is the Christ?
26見よ、彼は公然と語っているのに、人々はこれに対して何も言わない。役人たちは、この人がキリストであることを、ほんとうに知っているのではなかろうか。
27Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when the Christ cometh, no one knoweth whence he is.
27わたしたちはこの人がどこからきたのか知っている。しかし、キリストが現れる時には、どこから来るのか知っている者は、ひとりもいない」。
28Jesus therefore cried in the temple, teaching and saying, Ye both know me, and know whence I am; and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.
28イエスは宮の内で教えながら、叫んで言われた、「あなたがたは、わたしを知っており、また、わたしがどこからきたかも知っている。しかし、わたしは自分からきたのではない。わたしをつかわされたかたは真実であるが、あなたがたは、そのかたを知らない。
29I know him; because I am from him, and he sent me.
29わたしは、そのかたを知っている。わたしはそのかたのもとからきた者で、そのかたがわたしをつかわされたのである」。
30They sought therefore to take him: and no man laid his hand on him, because his hour was not yet come.
30そこで人々はイエスを捕えようと計ったが、だれひとり手をかける者はなかった。イエスの時が、まだきていなかったからである。
31But of the multitude many believed on him; and they said, When the Christ shall come, will he do more signs than those which this man hath done?
31しかし、群衆の中の多くの者が、イエスを信じて言った、「キリストがきても、この人が行ったよりも多くのしるしを行うだろうか」。
32The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things concerning him; and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to take him.
32群衆がイエスについてこのようなうわさをしているのを、パリサイ人たちは耳にした。そこで、祭司長たちやパリサイ人たちは、イエスを捕えようとして、下役どもをつかわした。
33Jesus therefore said, Yet a little while am I with you, and I go unto him that sent me.
33イエスは言われた、「今しばらくの間、わたしはあなたがたと一緒にいて、それから、わたしをおつかわしになったかたのみもとに行く。
34Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, ye cannot come.
34あなたがたはわたしを捜すであろうが、見つけることはできない。そしてわたしのいる所に、あなたがたは来ることができない」。
35The Jews therefore said among themselves, Whither will this man go that we shall not find him? will he go unto the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?
35そこでユダヤ人たちは互に言った、「わたしたちが見つけることができないというのは、どこへ行こうとしているのだろう。ギリシヤ人の中に離散している人たちのところにでも行って、ギリシヤ人を教えようというのだろうか。
36What is this word that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me; and where I am, ye cannot come?
36また、『わたしを捜すが、見つけることはできない。そしてわたしのいる所には来ることができないだろう』と言ったその言葉は、どういう意味だろう」。
37Now on the last day, the great [day] of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink.
37祭の終りの大事な日に、イエスは立って、叫んで言われた、「だれでもかわく者は、わたしのところにきて飲むがよい。
38He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, from within him shall flow rivers of living water.
38わたしを信じる者は、聖書に書いてあるとおり、その腹から生ける水が川となって流れ出るであろう」。
39But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believed on him were to receive: for the Spirit was not yet [given]; because Jesus was not yet glorified.
39これは、イエスを信じる人々が受けようとしている御霊をさして言われたのである。すなわち、イエスはまだ栄光を受けておられなかったので、御霊がまだ下っていなかったのである。
40[Some] of the multitude therefore, when they heard these words, said, This is of a truth the prophet.
40群衆のある者がこれらの言葉を聞いて、「このかたは、ほんとうに、あの預言者である」と言い、
41Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, What, doth the Christ come out of Galilee?
41ほかの人たちは「このかたはキリストである」と言い、また、ある人々は、「キリストはまさか、ガリラヤからは出てこないだろう。
42Hath not the scripture said that the Christ cometh of the seed of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?
42キリストは、ダビデの子孫から、またダビデのいたベツレヘムの村から出ると、聖書に書いてあるではないか」と言った。
43So there arose a division in the multitude because of him.
43こうして、群衆の間にイエスのことで分争が生じた。
44And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.
44彼らのうちのある人々は、イエスを捕えようと思ったが、だれひとり手をかける者はなかった。
45The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why did ye not bring him?
45さて、下役どもが祭司長たちやパリサイ人たちのところに帰ってきたので、彼らはその下役どもに言った、「なぜ、あの人を連れてこなかったのか」。
46The officers answered, Never man so spake.
46下役どもは答えた、「この人の語るように語った者は、これまでにありませんでした」。
47The Pharisees therefore answered them, Are ye also led astray?
47パリサイ人たちが彼らに答えた、「あなたがたまでが、だまされているのではないか。
48Hath any of the rulers believed on him, or of the Pharisees?
48役人たちやパリサイ人たちの中で、ひとりでも彼を信じた者があっただろうか。
49But this multitude that knoweth not the law are accursed.
49律法をわきまえないこの群衆は、のろわれている」。
50Nicodemus saith unto them (he that came to him before, being one of them),
50彼らの中のひとりで、以前にイエスに会いにきたことのあるニコデモが、彼らに言った、
51Doth our law judge a man, except it first hear from himself and know what he doeth?
51「わたしたちの律法によれば、まずその人の言い分を聞き、その人のしたことを知った上でなければ、さばくことをしないのではないか」。
52They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and see that out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.
52彼らは答えて言った、「あなたもガリラヤ出なのか。よく調べてみなさい、ガリラヤからは預言者が出るものではないことが、わかるだろう」。〔そして、人々はおのおの家に帰って行った。
53And they went every man unto his own house:
53そして、人々はおのおの家に帰って行った。
