¹And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the sojourners of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As Jehovah, the God of Israel, liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

¹Da sa tisbitten Elias, en av dem som var flyttet inn i Gilead, til Akab: Så sant Herren, Israels Gud, lever, han hvis tjener jeg er: Det skal i disse år ikke komme dugg eller regn uten efter mitt ord.

²And the word of Jehovah came unto him, saying,

²Og Herrens ord kom til ham, og det lød således:

³Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.

³Gå herfra og ta veien mot øst og skjul dig ved bekken Krit østenfor Jordan!

⁴And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.

⁴Du skal drikke av bekken, og jeg har befalt ravnene å forsørge dig der.

⁵So he went and did according unto the word of Jehovah; for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.

⁵Så gikk han og gjorde som Herren hadde sagt; han gikk til bekken Krit østenfor Jordan og opholdt sig der,

⁶And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

⁶og ravnene kom til ham med brød og kjøtt om morgenen og med brød og kjøtt om aftenen, og han drakk av bekken.

⁷And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.

⁷Men da det var gått en tid, blev bekken uttørret; for det kom ikke regn i landet.

⁸And the word of Jehovah came unto him, saying,

⁸Da kom Herrens ord til ham, og det lød således:

⁹Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Sidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain thee.

⁹Stå op og gå til Sarepta, som hører til Sidon, og bli der! Jeg har befalt en enke der å forsørge dig.

¹⁰So he arose and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

¹⁰Han stod op og gikk til Sarepta, og da han kom til byporten, fikk han se en enke som gikk og sanket ved; han ropte på henne og sa: Hent mig litt vann i en skål, så jeg kan få drikke!

¹¹And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand.

¹¹Da hun nu gikk for å hente det, ropte han efter henne og sa: Ta med et stykke brød til mig!

¹²And she said, As Jehovah thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but a handful of meal in the jar, and a little oil in the cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

¹²Da sa hun: Så sant Herren din Gud lever: Jeg eier ikke en brødskive, men har bare en håndfull mel i krukken og litt olje i kruset, og nu går jeg her og sanker et par stykker ved for å gå hjem og lage det til for mig og min sønn, så vi kan ete det og så dø.

¹³And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said; but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it forth unto me, and afterward make for thee and for thy son.

¹³Men Elias sa til henne: Frykt ikke! Gå hjem og lag det til, som du har sagt! Lag bare først et lite brød til mig av det og kom ut til mig med det! Siden kan du så lage til noget for dig og din sønn.

¹⁴For thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, The jar of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that Jehovah sendeth rain upon the earth.

¹⁴For så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Melkrukken skal ikke bli tom og oljekruset ikke fattes olje like til den dag Herren sender regn over jorden.

¹⁵And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat [many] days.

¹⁵Og hun gikk og gjorde som Elias hadde sagt, og de hadde mat, både han og hun og hennes hus, i lang tid;

¹⁶The jar of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of Jehovah, which he spake by Elijah.

¹⁶melkrukken blev ikke tom, og oljekrukken fattedes ikke olje, efter det ord som Herren hadde talt gjennem Elias.

¹⁷And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him.

¹⁷Men nogen tid efter hendte det at sønn til konen som eide huset, blev syk; og hans sykdom blev så svær at det til slutt ikke mere var livsånde i ham.

¹⁸And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? thou art come unto me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son!

¹⁸Da sa hun til Elias: Hvad har jeg med dig å gjøre, du Guds mann? Du er kommet til mig for å minne mig om min synd og la min sønn dø.

¹⁹And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into the chamber, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.

¹⁹Han svarte henne: Gi mig din sønn hit! Så tok han ham fra hennes fang og bar ham op på loftet, hvor han bodde, og la ham på sin seng.

²⁰And he cried unto Jehovah, and said, O Jehovah my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?

²⁰Og han ropte til Herren og sa: Herre min Gud! Har du da også ført ulykke over denne enke hos hvem jeg bor som gjest, ved å la hennes sønn dø?

²¹And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto Jehovah, and said, O Jehovah my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again.

²¹Så strakte han sig tre ganger bortover barnet og ropte til Herren og sa: Herre min Gud! La dette barns sjel vende tilbake til det!

²²And Jehovah hearkened unto the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

²²Og Herren hørte Elias' bønn, og barnets sjel vendte tilbake, så det blev levende igjen.

²³And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother; and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.

²³Og Elias tok barnet og bar det fra loftet ned i huset og gav det til dets mor; og han sa: Se, din sønn lever.

²⁴And the woman said to Elijah, Now I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of Jehovah in thy mouth is truth.

²⁴Da sa kvinnen til Elias: Nu vet jeg at du er en Guds mann, og at Herrens ord i din munn er sannhet.
