¹Now the Philistines gathered together all their hosts to Aphek: and the Israelites encamped by the fountain which is in Jezreel.

¹Filistrene samlet alle sine hærer i Afek; men Israel leiret sig ved kilden i Jisre'el.

²And the lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds, and by thousands; and David and his men passed on in the rearward with Achish.

²Da nu filistrenes høvdinger drog frem med sine hundreder og tusener, drog også David og hans menn frem sammen med Akis; de var bakerst i hæren.

³Then said the princes of the Philistines, What [do] these Hebrews [here]? And Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, who hath been with me these days, or [rather] these years, and I have found no fault in him since he fell away [unto me] unto this day?

³Da sa filistrenes høvdinger: Hvad skal disse hebreere her? Akis svarte: Det er jo David, en av Sauls, Israels konges, tjenere, som nu har vært hos mig et år eller mere, og jeg har ikke funnet noget ondt hos ham fra den dag han gikk over til mig, og til denne dag.

⁴But he princes of the Philistines were wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make the man return, that he may go back to his place where thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he become an adversary to us: for wherewith should this [fellow] reconcile himself unto his lord? should it not be with the heads of these men?

⁴Men filistrenes høvdinger blev vrede på ham og sa til ham: Send mannen hjem og la ham vende tilbake til det sted som du har anvist ham! Han skal ikke dra med oss i striden; for da kunde han vende sig mot oss i slaget. Hvorledes skulde han vel kunne bedre gjenvinne sin herres yndest enn ved å komme til ham med disse menns hoder?

⁵Is not this David, of whom they sang one to another in dances, saying, Saul hath slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands?

⁵Er det ikke den samme David som de sang således om under dansen: Saul har slått sine tusener, men David sine titusener?

⁶Then Achish called David, and said unto him, As Jehovah liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight; for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords favor thee not.

⁶Da kalte Akis David til sig og sa til ham: Så sant Herren lever: Du er en ærlig mann, og jeg ser gjerne at du går ut og inn hos mig i leiren; for jeg har ikke funnet noget ondt hos dig fra den dag du kom til mig, og til denne dag. Men høvdingene synes ikke om dig.

⁷Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thou displease not the lords of the Philistines.

⁷Så vend nu tilbake og dra bort i fred, så du ikke gjør noget som filistrenes høvdinger ikke synes om!

⁸And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant so long as I have been before thee unto this day, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?

⁸Da sa David til Akis: Hvad har jeg gjort, og hvad ondt har du funnet hos din tjener fra den dag jeg kom i din tjeneste, like til denne dag, siden jeg ikke må dra med og stride mot min herre kongens fiender?

⁹And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle.

⁹Akis svarte David: Jeg vet at du i mine øine er god som en Guds engel; men filistrenes høvdinger sier: Han skal ikke dra med oss i striden.

¹⁰Wherefore now rise up early in the morning with the servants of thy lord that are come with thee; and as soon as ye are up early in the morning, and have light, depart.

¹⁰Så stå nu tidlig op imorgen, både du og din herres tjenere som er kommet hit med dig - gjør eder tidlig ferdige imorgen og dra bort så snart det blir lyst!

¹¹So David rose up early, he and his men, to depart in the morning, to return into the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

¹¹Så stod David tidlig op med sine menn og gav sig samme morgen på hjemveien til filistrenes land; men filistrene drog op til Jisre'el.
