¹And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of Jehovah.

¹Da kong Esekias hørte det, sønderrev han sine klær og klædde sig i sekk og gikk inn i Herrens hus.

²And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

²Og han sendte slottshøvdingen Eljakim og statsskriveren Sebna og de eldste blandt prestene, klædd i sekk, til profeten Esaias, Amos' sønn.

³And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of contumely; for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.

³Og de sa til ham: Så sier Esekias: En nødens og tuktelsens og vanærens dag er denne dag; barnet er kommet til modermunnen, men det er ingen kraft til å føde.

⁴It may be Jehovah thy God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which Jehovah thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is left.

⁴Kanskje Herren din Gud vil høre det Rabsake har sagt, han som hans herre, kongen i Assyria, har sendt for å håne den levende Gud, så at han straffer ham for de ord Herren din Gud har hørt. Opsend da en bønn for den levning som ennu er igjen!

⁵So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

⁵Da kong Esekias' tjenere kom til Esaias,

⁶And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus saith Jehovah, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

⁶sa Esaias til dem: Så skal I si til eders herre: Så sier Herren: Frykt ikke for de ord du hørte, de som assyrerkongens tjenere hånte mig med!

⁷Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he shall hear tidings, and shall return unto his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.

⁷Se, jeg vil inngi ham et sådant sinn at han for et rykte han får høre, vender tilbake til sitt land; og jeg vil la ham falle for sverdet i sitt land.

⁸So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.

⁸Da Rabsake vendte tilbake, fant han assyrerkongen i ferd med å stride mot Libna; for han hadde hørt at han hadde brutt op fra Lakis.

⁹And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He is come out to fight against thee. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,

⁹Da hørte kongen si om Tirhaka, kongen i Etiopia, at han hadde draget ut for å stride mot ham. Og da han hørte det, sendte han bud til Esekias og sa:

¹⁰Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God in whom thou trustest deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

¹⁰Så skal I si til Judas konge Esekias: La ikke din Gud, som du setter din lit til, få narret dig, så du tenker som så: Jerusalem skal ikke gis i assyrerkongens hånd.

¹¹Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly: and shalt thou be delivered?

¹¹Du har hørt hvad kongene i Assyria har gjort med alle landene, at de har ødelagt dem, og du skulde bli reddet?

¹²Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden that were in Telassar?

¹²Har vel folkenes guder frelst dem som mine fedre ødela, Gosan og Karan og Resef og Edens barn i Telassar?

¹³Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?

¹³Hvor er nu Hamats konge og Arpads konge og byen Sefarva'ims konge, Henas og Ivvas konger?

¹⁴And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up unto the house of Jehovah, and spread it before Jehovah.

¹⁴Da Esekias hadde mottatt brevet av sendebudene og lest det, gikk han op til Herrens hus, og der bredte Esekias det ut for Herrens åsyn.

¹⁵And Hezekiah prayed unto Jehovah, saying,

¹⁵Og Esekias bad til Herren og sa:

¹⁶O Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, that sittest [above] the cherubim, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth.

¹⁶Herre, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud, du som troner på kjerubene! Du alene er Gud for alle jordens. riker, du har gjort himmelen og jorden.

¹⁷Incline thine ear, O Jehovah, and hear; open thine eyes, O Jehovah, and see; and hear all the words of Sennacherib, who hath sent to defy the living God.

¹⁷Herre, bøi ditt øre til og hør! Herre, oplat dine øine og se! Hør alle de ord som Sankerib har sendt for å håne den levende Gud!

¹⁸Of a truth, Jehovah, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the countries, and their land,

¹⁸Det er sant, Herre, at kongene i Assyria har ødelagt alle folkene og deres land,

¹⁹and have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them.

¹⁹og de har kastet deres guder i ilden; for de er ikke guder, men et verk av menneskehender, tre og sten, og derfor kunde de gjøre dem til intet.

²⁰Now therefore, O Jehovah our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art Jehovah, even thou only.

²⁰Men frels oss nu, Herre vår Gud, av hans hånd, så alle jordens riker må kjenne at du alene er Herren!

²¹Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria,

²¹Da sendte Esaias, Amos' sønn, bud til Esekias og lot si: Så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Vedkommende det du har bedt mig om mot kongen i Assyria Sankerib,

²²this is the word which Jehovah hath spoken concerning him: The virgin daughter of Zion hath despised thee and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.

²²da lyder det ord Herren har talt om ham således: Jomfruen, Sions datter, forakter dig, spotter dig; Jerusalems datter ryster på hodet efter dig.

²³Whom hast thou defied and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice and lifted up thine eyes on high? [even] against the Holy One of Israel.

²³Hvem har du hånet og spottet, og mot hvem har du løftet din røst? Du har løftet dine øine til det høie, mot Israels Hellige.

²⁴By thy servants hast thou defied the Lord, and hast said, With the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice fir-trees thereof; and I will enter into its farthest height, the forest of its fruitful field;

²⁴Ved dine tjenere har du hånet Herren og sagt: Med mine mange vogner drog jeg op på fjellenes tinder, til Libanons øverste topper, og jeg hugger ned dets høieste sedrer, dets herlige cypresser, og jeg trenger frem til dets øverste høide, dets frodige skog;

²⁵I have digged and drunk water, and with the sole of my feet will I dry up all the rivers of Egypt.

²⁵jeg gravde brønner og drakk av dem, og jeg tørker ut alle Egyptens strømmer med mine fotsåler.

²⁶Hast thou not heard how I have done it long ago, and formed it of ancient times? now have I brought it to pass, that it should be thine to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps.

²⁶* Har du ikke hørt det? Fra fjerne tider har jeg gjort det, fra fordums dager har jeg laget det så. Nu har jeg latt det komme, så du har fatt makt til å ødelegge faste byer og gjøre dem til øde grushauger. / {* Herrens ord til Sankerib.}

²⁷Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as a field [of grain] before it is grown up.

²⁷Og deres innbyggere blev maktløse; de blev forferdet og skamfulle; de blev som gresset på marken og som de grønne urter, som gresset på takene og som korn som er ødelagt av brand før det er fullvokset.

²⁸But I know thy sitting down, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy raging against me.

²⁸Enten du sitter eller du går ut og inn, så vet jeg det, og jeg vet at du raser mot mig.

²⁹Because of thy raging against me, and because thine arrogancy is come up into mine ears, therefore will I put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.

²⁹Fordi du raser mot mig, og din overmodige trygghet har nådd op til mine ører, så vil jeg legge min ring i din nese og mitt bissel mellem dine leber og føre dig tilbake den vei du kom.

³⁰And this shall be the sign unto thee: ye shall eat this year that which groweth of itself, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit thereof.

³⁰Og dette skal du* ha til tegn: Iår skal I ete det korn som vokser av sig selv, og næste år det som skyter op fra roten; men i det tredje år skal I så og høste og plante vingårder og ete deres frukt. / {* Esekias.}

³¹And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.

³¹Og den rest som har sloppet unda av Judas hus, skal skyte dypere rot nedentil og bære frukt oventil.

³²For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and out of mount Zion they that shall escape. The zeal of Jehovah of hosts will perform this.

³²For fra Jerusalem skal utgå en levning og fra Sions berg en rest som har sloppet unda; Herrens, hærskarenes Guds nidkjærhet skal gjøre dette.

³³Therefore thus saith Jehovah concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come unto this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither shall he come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it.

³³Derfor sier Herren så om kongen i Assyria: Han skal ikke komme inn i denne by og ikke skyte en pil inn i den, og han skal ikke rykke frem mot den med skjold og ikke opkaste voll mot den.

³⁴By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and he shall not come unto this city, saith Jehovah.

³⁴Den vei han kom, skal han vende tilbake, og inn i denne by skal han ikke komme, sier Herren.

³⁵For I will defend this city to save it, for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.

³⁵Og jeg vil verne denne by og frelse den, for min skyld og for min tjener Davids skyld.

³⁶And the angel of Jehovah went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand; and when men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.

³⁶Og Herrens engel gikk ut og slo hundre og fem og åtti tusen mann i assyrernes leir; og da folk stod op om morgenen, fikk de se dem alle ligge der som døde kropper.

³⁷So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.

³⁷Da brøt kongen i Assyria Sankerib op og drog bort og vendte tilbake, og siden holdt han sig i ro i Ninive.

³⁸And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. And Esar-haddon his son reigned in his stead.

³⁸Men da han engang tilbad i sin gud Nisroks hus, slo hans sønner Adrammelek og Sareser ham ihjel med sverd. De kom sig unda og flyktet til Ararats land, og hans sønn Asarhaddon blev konge i hans sted.
