¹কৈসরিয়ায় কর্ণীলিয় নামে একজন লোক ছিলেন; ইনি ছিলেন ‘ইতালীয়’ বাহিনীর একজন সেনাপতি৷

¹Now there was a certain man in Caesarea, Cornelius by name, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment,

²তিনি ছিলেন ঈশ্বর ভক্ত, তাঁর গৃহস্থ সমস্ত পরিজন সত্যময় ঈশ্বরের উপাসনা করত৷ তিনি ইহুদীদের মধ্যে গরীব দুঃখীদের অর্থ দিতেন আর সবসময়ই ঈশ্বরের কাছে প্রার্থনা জানাতেন৷

²a devout man, and one who feared God with all his house, who gave gifts for the needy generously to the people, and always prayed to God.

³একদিন প্রায় তিনটের সময় এক দর্শনের মাধ্যমে তিনি স্পষ্ট দেখতে পেলেন য়ে ঈশ্বরের এক দূত তাঁর কাছে এসে বলছেন, ‘কর্ণীলিয়!’

³At about the ninth hour of the day 3:00 PM , he clearly saw in a vision an angel of God coming to him, and saying to him, “Cornelius!”

⁴কর্ণীলিয় স্বর্গদূতের দিকে চেয়ে ভয় পেয়ে বললেন, ‘মহাশয়, আপনি কি চান?’ সেই স্বর্গদূত তাঁকে বললেন, ‘কর্ণীলিয় তোমার প্রার্থনা ঈশ্বর শুনেছেন; গরীবদের তুমি য়ে সাহায্য কর, তা তিনি দেখেছেন৷ ঈশ্বর তোমায় স্মরণ করেছেন৷

⁴He, fastening his eyes on him, and being frightened, said, “What is it, Lord?” He said to him, “Your prayers and your gifts to the needy have gone up for a memorial before God.

⁵তুমি যাফো শহরে লোকদের পাঠাও, সেখানে শিমোন নামে একজন লোক আছে, যার অপর নাম পিতর, তোমার লোকেরা সেখানে গিয়ে তাকে এখানে নিয়ে আসুক৷

⁵Now send men to Joppa, and get Simon, who is surnamed Peter.

⁶সে চামড়ার ব্যবসাযী শিমোনের বাড়িতে আছে, সেই বাড়ি সমুদ্রের ধারে৷’

⁶He lodges with one Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the seaside. TR adds “This one will tell you what it is necessary for you to do.” ”

⁷স্বর্গদূত কথা বলে চলে গেলে পরে কর্ণীলিয় দুজন কর্মচারীকে ও একজন সৈনিককে ডেকে পাঠালেন৷ ঈশ্বরভক্ত এই সৈনিকটি কাজে সাহায্য করার ব্যাপারে সব সময়ই কর্ণীলিয়র কাছে কাছে থাকত৷

⁷When the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier of those who waited on him continually.

⁸এই তিন ব্যক্তির কাছে কর্ণীলিয় সব কিছু বুঝিয়ে তাদের যাফোতে পাঠালেন৷

⁸Having explained everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.

⁹পরের দিন তারা যখন যাফোর কাছাকাছি পৌঁছলো৷ সেই সময়ে পিতর প্রার্থনা করার জন্য ছাদের উপর উঠে ছিলেন৷ বেলা তখন ভর দুপুর৷

⁹Now on the next day as they were on their journey, and got close to the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray at about noon.

¹⁰পিতরের খিদে পেল এবং তিনি খেতে চাইলেন৷ নীচে লোকেরা তখন পিতরের জন্য খাবার প্রস্তুত করছে, এমন সময় তিনি আবিষ্ট হলেন৷

¹⁰He became hungry and desired to eat, but while they were preparing, he fell into a trance.

¹¹তিনি দেখলেন আকাশ মুক্ত হয়েছে আর একটা কিছু নেমে আসছে৷ সেটা দেখতে একটা বড় চাদরের মত, তার চারটে খুঁট ধরে কেউ য়েন তা মাটিতে নামিয়ে দিচ্ছে৷

¹¹He saw heaven opened and a certain container descending to him, like a great sheet let down by four corners on the earth,

¹²তার মধ্যে পৃথিবীর সব রকমের পশু ও সরীসৃপ এবং আকাশের নানা রকমের পক্ষী রয়েছে৷

¹²in which were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild animals, reptiles, and birds of the sky.

¹³এরপর সেই সব পিতরকে বলল, ‘পিতর ওঠ, মার ও খাও৷’

¹³A voice came to him, “Rise, Peter, kill and eat!”

¹⁴পিতর বললেন, ‘প্রভু কখনই না! কারণ আমি কখনও কোন অশুদ্ধ বা অপবিত্র কিছু খাই নি৷’

¹⁴But Peter said, “Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.”

¹⁵তখন আবার এই রব শোনা গেল, ‘ঈশ্বর যা শুদ্ধ করেছেন তা তুমি ‘অশুদ্ধ’ বোলো না!’

¹⁵A voice came to him again the second time, “What God has cleansed, you must not call unclean.”

¹⁶এইভাবে তিন বার ঘটে যাবার পর সেই চাদরটি আকাশে তুলে নেওয়া হল৷

¹⁶This was done three times, and immediately the vessel was received up into heaven.

¹⁷পিতর য়ে দর্শন পেয়েছিলেন তার অর্থ কি হতে পারে তা যখন তিনি মনে মনে চিন্তা করছেন, সেই সময় কর্ণীলিয়াসের পাঠানো ঐ লোকেরা শিমোনের বাড়ির খোঁজ করতে করতে বাড়ির ফটকে এসে হাজির হল৷

¹⁷Now while Peter was very perplexed in himself what the vision which he had seen might mean, behold, the men who were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon’s house, stood before the gate,

¹⁸তারা জিজ্ঞেস করল, ‘শিমোন যাকে পিতর বলে তিনি কি এ বাড়িতে রয়েছেন?’

¹⁸and called and asked whether Simon, who was surnamed Peter, was lodging there.

¹⁹পিতর তখনও সেই দর্শনের বিষয়ে চিন্তা করছেন, তখন আত্মা তাঁকে বললেন, ‘দেখ! তিন জন লোক তোমার খোঁজ করছে৷

¹⁹While Peter was pondering the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three Reading from TR and NU. MT omits “three” men seek you.

²⁰তুমি উঠে নীচে যাও, বিনা দ্বিধায় তাদের সঙ্গে যাও, কারণ আমিই তাদের পাঠিয়েছি৷’

²⁰But arise, get down, and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them.”

²¹তখন পিতর নীচে গিয়ে সেই লোকদের বললেন, ‘দেখুন, আপনারা যাকে খুঁজছেন, আমিই সেই লোক৷ আপনারা এখানে কেন এসেছেন?’

²¹Peter went down to the men, and said, “Behold, I am he whom you seek. Why have you come?”

²²তারা বলল, ‘আমরা সেনাপতি কর্ণীলিয়াসের কাছ থেকে এসেছি৷ তিনি একজন ধার্মিক লোক, তিনি ঈশ্বরের উপাসনা করেন৷ ইহুদীদের কাছেও তিনি শ্রদ্ধার পাত্র৷ স্বর্গদূত কর্ণীলিয়াসকে নির্দেশ দিয়েছেন য়েন আপনাকে তাঁর বাড়ীতে আসতে আমন্ত্রণ দেওয়া হয়৷ আপনি কি বলবেন তা য়েন তিনি শুনতে পান৷’

²²They said, “Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous man and one who fears God, and well spoken of by all the nation of the Jews, was directed by a holy angel to invite you to his house, and to listen to what you say.”

²³তখন পিতর তাদের ভেতরে নিয়ে গিয়ে রাতটা তাঁর ওখানে থাকার ব্যবস্থা করলেন৷ পর দিন পিতর প্রস্তুত হয়ে সেই লোকদের সঙ্গে রওনা হয়ে গেলেন৷ যাফো থেকে কয়েকজন বিশ্বাসী ভাইও পিতরের সঙ্গে গেলেন৷

²³So he called them in and lodged them. On the next day Peter arose and went out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him.

²⁴পরের দিন তাঁরা কৈসরিয়া শহরে এলেন৷ কর্ণীলিয়া তাঁদের জন্য অপেক্ষা করছিলেন, তিনি তাঁর আত্মীয় ও ঘনিষ্ঠ বন্ধুদের তাঁর বাড়িতে ডেকেছিলেন৷

²⁴On the next day they entered into Caesarea. Cornelius was waiting for them, having called together his relatives and his near friends.

²⁵পিতর যখন ভেতরে গেলেন তখন কর্ণীলিয় এসে তাঁর সঙ্গে সাক্ষাত্ করলেন; আর উপুড় হয়ে পড়ে পিতরকে প্রণাম জানালেন৷

²⁵When it happened that Peter entered, Cornelius met him, fell down at his feet, and worshiped him.

²⁶কিন্তু পিতর তাঁকে বললেন, ‘আহা, কি করছেন, উঠুন! আমি তো একজন সামান্য মানুষ মাত্র৷’

²⁶But Peter raised him up, saying, “Stand up! I myself am also a man.”

²⁷পিতর তাঁর সঙ্গে কথা বলতে বলতে ভেতরে গিয়ে দেখলেন, সেখানে বহুলোক এসে জড়ো হয়েছে৷

²⁷As he talked with him, he went in and found many gathered together.

²⁸পিতর তাঁদের বললেন, ‘আপনারা জানেন, অন্য জাতের লোকের সঙ্গে মেলামেশা করা বা তাদের বাড়ি যাওয়া ইহুদীদের জন্য বিধি-সম্মত কাজ নয়; কিন্তু ঈশ্বর আমাকে দেখিয়ে দিয়েছেন য়ে, কোন মানুষকে ‘অশুচি’ বা ‘অপবিত্র’ বলা ঠিক নয়৷

²⁸He said to them, “You yourselves know how it is an unlawful thing for a man who is a Jew to join himself or come to one of another nation, but God has shown me that I shouldn’t call any man unholy or unclean.

²⁹তাই আমাকে ডেকে পাঠান হল, আর আমি বিনা আপত্তিতে চলে এলাম৷ এখন আমি জানতে চাই আপনারা কি কারণে আমায় ডেকে পাঠিয়েছেন৷’

²⁹Therefore also I came without complaint when I was sent for. I ask therefore, why did you send for me?”

³⁰কর্ণীলিয় বললেন, ‘চারদিন আগে এই সময় আমি আমার ঘরে বসে প্রার্থনা করছিলাম, বেলা তখন প্রায় তিনটে, সেই সময় হঠাত্ এক ব্যক্তি আমার সামনে এসে দাঁড়ালেন, তাঁর গায়ে ছিল উজ্জ্বল পোশাক৷

³⁰Cornelius said, “Four days ago, I was fasting until this hour, and at the ninth hour, 3:00 P. M. I prayed in my house, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,

³¹তিনি বললেন, ‘কর্ণীলিয় তোমার প্রার্থনা গ্রাহ্য় হয়েছে, আর তুমি গরীব দুঃখীদের য়ে সাহায্য কর তা-ও ঈশ্বর দেখেছেন৷ ঈশ্বর তোমাকে স্মরণ করেছেন;

³¹and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer is heard, and your gifts to the needy are remembered in the sight of God.

³²তাই তুমি যাফোয় কিছু লোক পাঠাও এবং শিমোন যাকে পিতর বলে তাকে এখানে নিয়ে এস৷ সমুদ্রের ধারে শিমোন নামে য়ে চামড়ার ব্যবসাযী আছে, সে তার বাড়িতে আছে৷’

³²Send therefore to Joppa, and summon Simon, who is surnamed Peter. He lodges in the house of Simon a tanner, by the seaside. When he comes, he will speak to you.’

³³তাই আমি সঙ্গে সঙ্গে আপনার কাছে লোক পাঠালাম; আর আপনি বড় অনুগ্রহ করে এখানে এসেছেন৷ এখন আমরা সকলে এখানে ঈশ্বরের সামনে আছি; প্রভু আপনাকে য়ে সব কথা বলতে আদেশ করেছেন আমরা সকলে তা শুনব৷’

³³Therefore I sent to you at once, and it was good of you to come. Now therefore we are all here present in the sight of God to hear all things that have been commanded you by God.”

³⁴তখন পিতর বলতে শুরু করলেন, ‘এখন আমি সত্যি সত্যিই বুঝতে পেরেছি য়ে ঈশ্বর কারও প্রতি পক্ষপাতিত্ব করেন না৷

³⁴Peter opened his mouth and said, “Truly I perceive that God doesn’t show favoritism;

³⁵প্রত্যেক জাতির মধ্যে য়ে কেউ ঈশ্বরের উপাসনা করে ও ন্যায় কাজ করে, ঈশ্বর এমন লোকদের গ্রহণ করেন৷

³⁵but in every nation he who fears him and works righteousness is acceptable to him.

³⁶তিনি ইস্রায়েলের লোকদের কাছে তাঁর সুসমাচার পাঠিয়েছিলেন৷ তিনি সেই সুসমাচারে জানালেন য়ে যীশু খ্রীষ্টের মাধ্যমেই শান্তি লাভ হয়৷ তিনি সকলেরই প্রভু!

³⁶The word which he sent to the children of Israel, preaching good news of peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all—

³⁷সমগ্র যিহূদাতে কি ঘটেছিল সে সব কথা আপনারা শুনেছেন৷ য়োহন বাপ্তাইজক লোকেদের কাছে বাপ্তিস্মের কথা প্রচার করার পর গালীলে এই ঘটনাগুলি শুরু হয়৷

³⁷you yourselves know what happened, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;

³⁸আপনারা সেই নাসরতীয় যীশুর বিষয়ে শুনেছেন, শুনেছেন ঈশ্বর কিভাবে তাঁকে পবিত্র আত্মায় ও পরাক্রমের সঙ্গে অভিষেক করেছিলেন৷ যীশু সর্বত্র মানুষের মঙ্গল করে বেড়াতেন, আর যাঁরা দিয়াবলের কবলে পড়েছিল তাদের তিনি মুক্ত করতেন, কারণ ঈশ্বর তাঁর সঙ্গে ছিলেন৷

³⁸even Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

³⁹যিহূদা ও জেরুশালেমে যীশু যা কিছু করেছেন, আমরা তা স্বচক্ষে দেখেছি, আমরা তার সাক্ষী৷ তারা তাঁকে কাঠের তৈরী এক ক্রুশে ঝুলিয়ে হত্যা করেছে;

³⁹We are witnesses of everything he did both in the country of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they also TR omits “also” killed, hanging him on a tree.

⁴⁰কিন্তু ঈশ্বর তাঁকে মৃত্যুর তিন দিনের মাথায় জীবিত করেছেন৷ ঈশ্বর লোকদের কাছে যীশুকে জীবিতরূপে দেখালেন৷

⁴⁰God raised him up the third day, and gave him to be revealed,

⁴¹কিন্তু তিনি সবাইকে দেখা দেন নি৷ ঈশ্বর পূর্বেই সাক্ষীরূপে যাদের মনোনীত করেছিলেন, কেবল তারাই তাঁকে দেখতে পেয়েছিলেন, আমরাই সেইসব সাক্ষী! মৃতদের মধ্য থেকে জীবিত হবার পর আমরা যীশুর সঙ্গে পান-আহার করেছি;

⁴¹not to all the people, but to witnesses who were chosen before by God, to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.

⁴²আর তিনি আমাদের আদেশ দিলেন, য়েন আমরা লোকদের মাঝে প্রচার করি আর সাক্ষ্য দিই য়ে তিনিই সেই ব্যক্তি, য়াঁকে ঈশ্বর সমস্ত জীবিত ও মৃত সকলের বিচারকর্তা করে মনোনীত করেছেন৷

⁴²He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that this is he who is appointed by God as the Judge of the living and the dead.

⁴³য়ে কেউ যীশুকে বিশ্বাস করবে, সে পাপের ক্ষমা পাবে৷ যীশুর নামে ঈশ্বর সেইসব লোকেদের পাপ ক্ষমা করবেন৷ সমস্ত ভাব্বাদী বলে গেছেন য়ে এ সত্য৷’

⁴³All the prophets testify about him, that through his name everyone who believes in him will receive remission of sins.”

⁴⁴পিতর যখন এইসব কথা বলছিলেন, তখন যাঁরা সেখানে সেইসব কথা শুনছিল, তাদের সকলের ওপর পবিত্র আত্মা নেমে এলেন৷

⁴⁴While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who heard the word.

⁴⁵ইহুদী সম্প্রদায় থেকে য়ে খ্রীষ্ট বিশ্বাসীরা পিতরের সঙ্গে সেখানে এসেছিলেন তাঁরা সকলে আশ্চর্য হয়ে গেলেন, কারণ অইহুদীদের ওপরও পবিত্র আত্মার দান নেমে এল৷

⁴⁵They of the circumcision who believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was also poured out on the Gentiles.

⁴⁶কারণ তাঁরা ওদেরকে নানা ভাষায় কথা বলতে ও ঈশ্বরের প্রশংসা করতে শুনলেন৷

⁴⁶For they heard them speaking in other languages and magnifying God. Then Peter answered,

⁴⁷তখন পিতর বললেন, ‘কেউ কি এই লোকদের জলে বাপ্তাইজ করতে অস্বীকার করতে পারে? আমরা য়েমন পবিত্র আত্মা পেয়েছি তারাও তো তেমনি পেয়েছে!’

⁴⁷“Can any man forbid the water, that these who have received the Holy Spirit as well as we should not be baptized?”

⁴⁸তখন তিনি যীশু খ্রীষ্টের নামে কর্ণীলিয়, তার পরিবারের লোকদের ও তাদের বন্ধুদের জলে বাপ্তিস্ম গ্রহণ করতে আদেশ করলেন৷ এরপর তাঁরা পিতরকে তাঁদের সঙ্গে কিছু দিন থাকতে অনুরোধ করলেন৷

⁴⁸He commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay some days.
