¹Čuj dakle, Jobe, što ću ti kazati, prikloni uho mojim besjedama.

¹Howbeit, Job, I pray thee, hear mine utterances, and hearken to all my words.

²Evo, usta sam svoja otvorio, a jezik riječi pod nepcem mi stvara.

²Behold now, I have opened my mouth, my tongue speaketh in my palate,

³Iskreno će ti zborit' srce moje, usne će čistu izreći istinu.

³My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart, and my lips shall utter knowledge purely.

⁴TÓa i mene je duh Božji stvorio, dah Svesilnoga oživio mene.

⁴The Spirit of ùGod hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.

⁵Ako uzmogneš, ti me opovrgni; spremi se da se suprotstaviš meni!

⁵If thou canst, answer me; array [thy words] before me: take thy stand.

⁶Gle, kao i ti, i ja sam pred Bogom, kao i ti, od gline bjeh načinjen;

⁶Behold, before ùGod I am as thou; I also am formed out of the clay.

⁷zato ja strahom tebe motrit' neću, ruka te moja neće pritisnuti.

⁷Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, nor my burden be heavy upon thee.

⁸Dakle, na moje uši rekao si - posve sam jasno tvoje čuo riječi:

⁸Surely thou hast spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of [thy] words: --

⁹'Nedužan sam i bez ikakva grijeha; prav sam i nema krivice na meni.

⁹I am clean without transgression; I am pure, and there is no iniquity in me;

¹⁰Al' On izlike protiv mene traži i za svojeg me drži dušmanina.

¹⁰Lo, he findeth occasions of hostility against me, he counteth me for his enemy;

¹¹Noge je moje u klade metnuo, nad svakim mojim on pazi korakom.'

¹¹He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths.

¹²Ovdje, kažem ti, u pravu ti nisi, jer s Bogom čovjek mjerit' se ne može.

¹²Behold, I will answer thee in this, thou art not right; for +God is greater than man.

¹³Pa zašto s njime zamećeš prepirku što ti na svaku riječ ne odgovara?

¹³Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.

¹⁴Bog zbori nama jednom i dva puta, al' čovjek na to pažnju ne obraća.

¹⁴For ùGod speaketh once, and twice, -- [and man] perceiveth it not --

¹⁵U snovima, u viđenjima noćnim, kada san dubok ovlada ljudima i na ležaju dok tvrdo snivaju,

¹⁵In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;

¹⁶tad on govori na uho čovjeku i utvarama plaši ga jezivim

¹⁶Then he openeth men's ears, and sealeth their instruction,

¹⁷da ga od djela njegovih odvrati, da u čovjeku obori oholost,

¹⁷That he may withdraw man [from his] work, and hide pride from man.

¹⁸da dušu njegovu spasi od jame i život mu od puta u Podzemlje.

¹⁸He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from passing away by the sword.

¹⁹Bolešću on ga kara na ležaju kad mu se kosti tresu bez prestanka,

¹⁹He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and with constant strife in his bones;

²⁰kad se kruh gadi njegovu životu i ponajbolje jelo duši njegovoj;

²⁰And his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty food;

²¹kada mu tijelo gine naočigled i vide mu se kosti ogoljele,

²¹His flesh is consumed away from view, and his bones that were not seen stick out;

²²kad mu se duša približava jami a život njegov boravištu mrtvih.

²²And his soul draweth near to the pit, and his life to the destroyers.

²³Ako se uza nj nađe tad anđeo, posrednik jedan između tisuću, da čovjeka na dužnost opomene,

²³If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his duty;

²⁴pa se sažali nad njim i pomoli: 'Izbavi ga da u jamu ne ide; za život njegov nađoh otkupninu!

²⁴Then he will be gracious unto him, and say, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.

²⁵Neka mu tijelo procvate mladošću, nek' se vrati u dane mladenačke!'

²⁵His flesh shall be fresher than in childhood; he shall return to the days of his youth.

²⁶Vapije k Bogu i Bog ga usliša: radosno On ga pogleda u lice; vrati čovjeku pravednost njegovu.

²⁶He shall pray unto +God, and he will receive him with favour; and he shall see his face with shoutings, and he will render unto man his righteousness.

²⁷Tada čovjek pred ljudima zapjeva: 'Griješio sam i pravo izvrtao, ali mi Bog zlom nije uzvratio.

²⁷He will sing before men, and say, I have sinned, and perverted what was right, and it hath not been requited to me;

²⁸On mi je dušu spasio od jame i život mi se veseli svjetlosti.'

²⁸He hath delivered my soul from going into the pit, and my life shall see the light.

²⁹Gle, sve to Bog je spreman učiniti do dva i do tri puta za čovjeka:

²⁹Lo, all these [things] worketh ùGod twice, thrice, with man,

³⁰da dušu njegovu spasi od jame i da mu život svjetlošću obasja.

³⁰To bring back his soul from the pit, that he may be enlightened with the light of the living.

³¹Pazi dÓe, Jobe, dobro me poslušaj; šuti, jer nisam sve još izrekao.

³¹Mark well, Job, hearken unto me; be silent, and I will speak.

³²Ako riječi još imaš, odvrati mi, zbori - rado bih opravdao tebe.

³²If thou hast anything to say, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify thee.

³³Ako li nemaš, poslušaj me samo: pazi, rad bih te poučit' mudrosti."

³³If not, hearken thou unto me; be silent, and I will teach thee wisdom.
