¹ Yn y dyddiau hynny nid oedd brenin yn Israel. Yr oedd rhyw Lefiad yn byw yng nghyffiniau mynydd-dir Effraim, ac fe gymerodd iddo ordderchwraig o Fethlehem Jwda.

¹And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Beth-lehem-judah.

² Ond bu'r ordderchwraig yn anffyddlon iddo; gadawodd ef a dianc adref i Fethlehem Jwda. Wedi iddi fod yno ryw bedwar mis,

²And his concubine played the harlot against him, and went away from him unto her father's house to Beth-lehem-judah, and was there the space of four months.

³ cychwynnodd ei gu373?r ar ei h�l gyda'i was a dau asyn, i'w denu hi'n �l. Daeth hi ag ef i'w chartref, a phan welodd ei thad ef yr oedd yn falch o'i gyfarfod.

³And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly unto her, to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father's house; and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.

⁴ Mynnodd ei dad-yng-nghyfraith, sef tad yr eneth, iddo aros yno am dridiau, a buont yn bwyta ac yn yfed ac yn cysgu yno.

⁴And his father-in-law, the damsel's father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.

⁵ Ar y pedwerydd dydd, wedi iddynt godi'n fore a pharatoi i gychwyn, dywedodd tad yr eneth wrth ei fab-yng-nghyfraith, "Atgyfnertha dy hun � thamaid o fara cyn cychwyn."

⁵And it came to pass on the fourth day, that they arose early in the morning, and he rose up to depart: and the damsel's father said unto his son-in-law, Strengthen thy heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward ye shall go your way.

⁶ Felly dyna'r ddau'n eistedd i lawr gyda'i gilydd i fwyta ac yfed; ac meddai tad yr eneth wrth y gu373?r, "Bodlona aros noson eto a'th fwynhau dy hun."

⁶So they sat down, and did eat and drink, both of them together: and the damsel's father said unto the man, Be pleased, I pray thee, to tarry all night, and let thy heart be merry.

⁷ Er i'r gu373?r godi i fynd, bu ei dad-yng-nghyfraith mor daer fel yr arhosodd yno noson arall.

⁷And the man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he lodged there again.

⁸ A phan gododd i gychwyn fore'r pumed diwrnod, dywedodd tad yr eneth, "Atgyfnertha dy hun."

⁸And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the damsel's father said, Strengthen thy heart, I pray thee, and tarry ye until the day declineth; and they did eat, both of them.

⁹ A buont yn hamddena hyd hwyr y dydd ac yn bwyta gyda'i gilydd. Yna, pan oedd y dyn a'i ordderch a'i lanc yn paratoi i gychwyn, dywedodd tad yr eneth wrtho, "Edrych, y mae'n hwyrhau, arhoswch heno; mae'r dydd ar ddarfod. Os arhosi yma heno a'th fwynhau dy hun, fe gewch godi'n gynnar yfory i'ch taith, a mynd adref."

⁹And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the damsel's father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thy heart may be merry; and to-morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.

¹⁰ Ond ni fynnai'r dyn aros; cododd, a mynd gyda'i ddau asyn llwythog, a'i ordderch, a'i was, nes dod gyferbyn � Jebus, hynny yw Jerwsalem.

¹⁰But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus (the same is Jerusalem): and there were with him a couple of asses saddled; his concubine also was with him.

¹¹ A phan oeddent yn ymyl Jebus, a'r dydd yn darfod, dywedodd y gwas wrth ei feistr, "Tyrd yn awr, gad inni droi i mewn yma i ddinas y Jebusiaid, a threulio'r nos ynddi."

¹¹When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.

¹² Ond atebodd ei feistr, "Nid awn i mewn i ddinas estron lle nad oes Israeliaid; fe awn cyn belled � Gibea."

¹²And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside into the city of a foreigner, that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.

¹³ Ac meddai wedyn wrth ei was, "Tyrd, fe awn cyn belled � Gibea neu Rama, a threulio'r nos yn un ohonynt."

¹³And he said unto his servant, Come and let us draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.

¹⁴ Felly ymlaen � hwy nes i'r haul fachlud arnynt yn ymyl Gibea Benjamin.

¹⁴So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them near to Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.

¹⁵ Troesant i mewn yno i dreulio'r nos yn Gibea; ond er iddynt fynd ac eistedd ar sgw�r y dref, nid oedd neb am eu cymryd i mewn i letya.

¹⁵And they turned aside thither, to go in to lodge in Gibeah: and he went in, and sat him down in the street of the city; for there was no man that took them into his house to lodge.

¹⁶ Ar hynny, dyma hen u373?r yn dod o'i waith yn y maes gyda'r hwyr. Un o fynydd-dir Effraim oedd ef, ond yn cartrefu dros dro yn Gibea; Benjaminiaid oedd pobl y lle.

¹⁶And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even: now the man was of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he sojourned in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.

¹⁷ Wrth godi ei olwg, gwelodd y teithiwr ar sgw�r y dref, ac meddai'r hen u373?r, "I ble rwyt ti'n mynd, ac o ble y daethost?"

¹⁷And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?

¹⁸ Dywedodd yntau wrtho, "Ar daith o Fethlehem Jwda i gyffiniau mynydd-dir Effraim yr ydym ni. Un oddi yno wyf fi, yn dychwelyd adref ar �l bod ym Methlehem Jwda; ond nid oes neb wedi fy nghymryd i'w du375?.

¹⁸And he said unto him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah unto the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim; from thence am I, and I went to Beth-lehem-judah: and I am [now] going to the house of Jehovah; and there is no man that taketh me into his house.

¹⁹ Y mae gennym wellt ac ebran i'n hasynnod, hefyd fara a gwin i mi a'th lawforwyn a'r gwas; nid oes ar dy weision angen un dim."

¹⁹Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man that is with thy servants: there is no want of anything.

²⁰ Dywedodd yr hen u373?r, "Croeso i chwi. Fe ofalaf fi am eich anghenion i gyd; rhaid ichwi beidio � threulio'r nos ar y sgw�r."

²⁰And the old man said, Peace be unto thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.

²¹ Aeth � hwy i'w du375? a phorthi'r asynnod; cawsant hwythau olchi eu traed a bwyta ac yfed.

²¹So he brought him into his house, and gave the asses fodder; and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.

²² Tra oeddent yn eu mwynhau eu hunain, daeth rhai o ddihirod y dref i ymgasglu o gwmpas y tu375?, a churo ar y drws a dweud wrth yr hen u373?r oedd yn berchen y tu375?, "Tyrd �'r dyn a ddaeth i'th du375? allan, i ni gael cyfathrach ag ef."

²²As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain base fellows, beset the house round about, beating at the door; and they spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thy house, that we may know him.

²³ Aeth perchennog y tu375? allan atynt a dweud wrthynt, "Nage, frodyr, peidiwch � chamymddwyn; gan fod y dyn wedi dod i'm tu375?, peidiwch � gwneud y fath anlladrwydd.

²³And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into my house, do not this folly.

²⁴ Dyma fy merch i, sy'n wyryf, a'i ordderch ef; dof � hwy allan i chwi eu treisio, neu wneud fel y mynnoch iddynt, ond peidiwch � gwneud y fath anlladrwydd gyda'r dyn."

²⁴Behold, here is my daughter a virgin, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not any such folly.

²⁵ Ond ni fynnai'r dynion wrando arno. Felly cydiodd y dyn yn ei ordderch a'i gwthio allan atynt, a buont yn ei threisio a'i cham-drin drwy'r nos, hyd y bore, ac yna gadael iddi fynd ar doriad y wawr.

²⁵But the men would not hearken to him: so the man laid hold on his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.

²⁶ Yn y bore, daeth y ddynes a disgyn wrth ddrws y tu375? lle'r oedd ei meistr.

²⁶Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her lord was, till it was light.

²⁷ Pan gododd ei meistr yn y bore ac agor drws y tu375? i fynd allan i gychwyn ar ei daith, dyna lle'r oedd ei ordderch wedi disgyn wrth ddrws y tu375?, a'i dwy law ar y rhiniog.

²⁷And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands upon the threshold.

²⁸ Dywedodd wrthi, "Cod, inni gael mynd." Ond nid oedd ateb. Cododd hi ar yr asyn ac aeth adref.

²⁸And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going; but none answered: then he took her up upon the ass; and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.

²⁹ Pan gyrhaeddodd ei gartref, cymerodd gyllell, a gafael yn ei ordderch a'i darnio bob yn gymal yn ddeuddeg darn, a'u hanfon drwy holl derfynau Israel.

²⁹And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.

³⁰ Yr oedd pawb a'i gwelodd yn dweud, "Ni wnaed ac ni welwyd y fath beth, o'r dydd y daeth yr Israeliaid i fyny o wlad yr Aifft hyd y dydd hwn. Edrychwch arni ac ystyried; yna mynegwch eich barn."

³⁰And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider it, take counsel, and speak.
