Proverbs

1

1 Diarhebion Solomon fab Dafydd, brenin Israel
1Proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:
2 i gael doethineb ac addysg, i ddeall geiriau deallus,
2to know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding;
3 i dderbyn addysg fuddiol, cyfiawnder, barn, ac uniondeb,
3to receive the instruction of wisdom, righteousness and judgment, and equity;
4 i roi craffter i'r gwirion, a gwybodaeth a synnwyr i'r ifanc.
4to give prudence to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
5 Y mae'r doeth yn gwrando ac yn cynyddu mewn dysg, a'r deallus yn ennill medrusrwydd,
5He that is wise will hear, and will increase learning; and the intelligent will gain wise counsels:
6 i ddeall dameg a'i dehongliad, dywediadau'r doeth a'u posau.
6to understand a proverb and an allegory, the words of the wise and their enigmas.
7 Ofn yr ARGLWYDD yw dechrau gwybodaeth, ond y mae ffyliaid yn diystyru doethineb a disgyblaeth.
7The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge: fools despise wisdom and instruction.
8 Fy mab, gwrando ar addysg dy dad, paid  gwrthod cyfarwyddyd dy fam;
8Hear, my son, the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the teaching of thy mother;
9 bydd yn dorch brydferth ar dy ben, ac yn gadwyn am dy wddf.
9for they shall be a garland of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
10 Fy mab, os hudir di gan bechaduriaid, paid chytuno hwy.
10My son, if sinners entice thee, consent not.
11 Fe ddywedant, "Tyrd gyda ni, inni gynllwynio i dywallt gwaed, a llechu'n ddiachos yn erbyn y diniwed;
11If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;
12 fel Sheol, llyncwn hwy'n fyw ac yn gyfan, fel rhai'n disgyn i'r pwll;
12let us swallow them up alive as Sheol, and whole, as those that go down into the pit;
13 fe gymerwn bob math ar gyfoeth, a llenwi ein tai ag ysbail;
13we shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:
14 bwrw dy goelbren gyda ni, a bydd un pwrs rhyngom i gyd."
14cast in thy lot among us; we will all have one purse:
15 Fy mab, paid mynd yr un ffordd hwy; cadw dy droed oddi ar eu llwybr.
15-- my son, walk not in the way with them, keep back thy foot from their path;
16 Oherwydd y mae eu traed yn rhuthro at ddrwg, ac yn prysuro i dywallt gwaed.
16for their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.
17 Yn sicr, ofer yw gosod rhwyd yng ngolwg unrhyw aderyn hedegog.
17For in vain the net is spread in the sight of anything which hath wings.
18 Am eu gwaed eu hunain y maent yn cynllwynio, ac yn llechu yn eu herbyn eu hunain.
18And these lay wait for their own blood; they lurk secretly for their own lives.
19 Dyma dynged pob un awchus am elw; y mae'n cymryd einioes y sawl a'i piau.
19So are the paths of every one that is greedy of gain: it taketh away the life of its possessors.
20 Y mae doethineb yn galw'n uchel yn y stryd, yn codi ei llais yn y sgwr,
20Wisdom crieth without; she raiseth her voice in the broadways;
21 yn gweiddi ar ben y muriau, yn traethu ei geiriau ym mynedfa pyrth y ddinas.
21she calleth in the chief [place] of concourse, in the entry of the gates; in the city she uttereth her words:
22 Chwi'r rhai gwirion, pa hyd y bodlonwch ar fod yn wirion, ac yr ymhyfryda'r gwatwarwyr mewn gwatwar, ac y cas ffyliaid wybodaeth?
22How long, simple ones, will ye love simpleness, and scorners take pleasure in their scorning, and the foolish hate knowledge?
23 Os newidiwch eich ffyrdd dan fy ngherydd, tywalltaf fy ysbryd arnoch, a gwneud i chwi ddeall fy ngeiriau.
23Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour forth my spirit unto you, I will make known to you my words.
24 Ond am i mi alw, a chwithau heb ymateb, ac imi estyn fy llaw, heb neb yn gwrando;
24Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no one regarded;
25 am i chwi ddiystyru fy holl gyngor, a gwrthod fy ngherydd
25and ye have rejected all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
26 am hynny, chwarddaf ar eich dinistr, a gwawdio pan ddaw dychryn arnoch,
26I also will laugh in your calamity, I will mock when your fear cometh;
27 pan ddaw dychryn arnoch fel corwynt, a dinistr yn taro fel storm, pan ddaw adfyd a gwasgfa arnoch.
27when your fear cometh as sudden destruction, and your calamity cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish come upon you:
28 Yna galwant arnaf, ond nid atebaf; fe'm ceisiant yn ddyfal, ond heb fy nghael.
28-- then will they call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me early, and shall not find me.
29 Oherwydd iddynt gasu gwybodaeth, a throi oddi wrth ofn yr ARGLWYDD,
29Because they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of Jehovah;
30 a gwrthod fy nghyngor, ac anwybyddu fy holl gerydd,
30they would none of my counsel, they despised all my reproof:
31 cnt fwyta o ffrwyth eu ffyrdd, a syrffedu ar eu cynlluniau.
31therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their way, and be filled with their own devices.
32 Oherwydd bydd anufudd-dod y gwirion yn eu lladd, a difrawder y ffyliaid yn eu difa.
32For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of the foolish shall cause them to perish.
33 Ond bydd yr un a wrendy arnaf yn byw'n ddiogel, yn dawel heb ofni drwg.
33But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be at rest from fear of evil.
