¹وقتی ناحاش، پادشاه عمونیان درگذشت، پسرش جانشین او شد.

¹Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.

²داود گفت: «ناحاش با من دوستی و خوبی نشان داد و حالا نوبت من است که به پسرش، حانون احسان کنم.» پس نمایندگان خود را برای تسلیت بخاطر وفات پدرش فرستاد. وقتی نمایندگان داود به سرزمین عمونیان پیش حانون رسیدند،

²And David said, I will show kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

³سرکردگان عمونیان به حانون گفتند: «آیا فکر می کنی که داود براستی نمایندگان خود را برای تعزیت و بخاطر احترام به پدرت فرستاده است؟ آن ها آمده اند تا وضع کشور را معلوم کنند و منظور شان از بین بردن سلطنت تو و جاسوسی از خاک ما است.»

³But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honor thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?

⁴بنابران، حانون ریش نمایندگان داود را تراشید و لباس شان را از بالا تا کمر پاره کرد و آن ها را از کشور خود راند.

⁴Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.

⁵آن ها آنجا را ترک کردند و چون داود از ماجرا آگاه شد، به آن مردان که از وضع خود خجالت می کشیدند، این پیام را فرستاد: «در اریحا بمانید تا ریش تان برسد و بعد اینجا بیائید.»

⁵Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

⁶چون عمونیان پی بردند که خطای بزرگی کرده اند، پس حانون سی و چهار تُن نقره تهیه کرد تا عراده و سوار را از ماورالنهر، ارام مَعکه و صوبه اجیر کنند.

⁶And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syriamaachah, and out of Zobah.

⁷آن ها سی و دو هزار عراده و سوار را اجیر کردند و با پادشاه مَعکه و سپاه او آمدند و در میدِبا موضع گرفتند. عمونیان هم از شهرهای خود آمده یکجا جمع شدند و برای جنگ رفتند.

⁷So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

⁸وقتی به داود خبر رسید، یوآب را با تمام اردوی شجاع خود برای مقابله فرستاد.

⁸And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

⁹عمونیان برای جنگ آماده شدند و در پیش دروازۀ شهر سنگر گرفتند. قوای کشورهائی که برای کمک آمده بودند، جدا از عمونیان در دشت قرار گرفتند.

⁹And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.

¹⁰چون یوآب دید که قوای دشمن قصد دارند از پیشرو و پشت سر حمله کنند، یک عده از افراد ورزیده را انتخاب کرده در مقابل ارامیان صف آراست.

¹⁰Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.

¹¹بقیۀ سپاه را تحت فرماندهی برادر خود، ابیشای به مقابلۀ عمونیان فرستاد

¹¹And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.

¹²و به او گفت: «اگر ارامیان بر ما غلبه کردند، شما به ما کمک کنید و اگر عمونیان بر شما غالب شدند، ما به کمک شما می آئیم.

¹²And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.

¹³شجاع و با جرأت باشید و ما باید مردانه وار برای مردم خود و بخاطر شهرهای خداوند بجنگیم. آنگاه ما کار خویش را بخداوند می سپاریم تا ببینیم که رضا و خواستۀ او چه خواهد بود.»

¹³Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.

¹⁴پس یوآب و همراهانش برای حمله بر ارامیان به خط جنگ نزدیک شدند. ارامیان از او فرار کردند.

¹⁴So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.

¹⁵وقتی عمونیان دیدند که ارامیان فرار کردند، آن ها هم از ابیشای و قوای او پا به فرار گذاشته بداخل شهر رفتند و یوآب به اورشلیم برگشت.

¹⁵And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

¹⁶چون ارامیان پی بردند که از دست اسرائیل شکست خورده اند، بنابران، قاصدان خود را فرستادند تا ارامیانی را که در شرق دریای فرات بودند، بسرکردگی شوفک، فرمانده عمومی سپاه هَدَدعَزَر بیاورند.

¹⁶And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

¹⁷وقتی داود از نقشۀ آن ها خبر شد، تمام لشکر اسرائیل را جمع کرد و از دریای اُردن عبور نمود و با قوای خود به مقابلۀ آن ها رفت. ارامیان هم دست به حمله زدند و جنگ شروع شد،

¹⁷And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.

¹⁸اما ارامیان بار دیگر فرار کردند و لشکر داود هفت هزار رانندۀ عراده و چهل هزار عسکر پیادۀ ارامیان را بقتل رساند. او همچنان شوفک، فرمانده عمومی سپاه ارامیان را کشت.چون عساکر هَدَدعَزَر دیدند که از دست اسرائیل شکست خورده اند، با داود صلح کردند و تابع او شدند و ارامیان حاضر نشدند که بار دیگر با عمونیان در جنگ کمک کنند.

¹⁸But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.

¹⁹چون عساکر هَدَدعَزَر دیدند که از دست اسرائیل شکست خورده اند، با داود صلح کردند و تابع او شدند و ارامیان حاضر نشدند که بار دیگر با عمونیان در جنگ کمک کنند.

¹⁹And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.
