¹پس از مدتی، یعنی در سال سوم خشکسالی خداوند به ایلیا فرمود: «پیش اخاب برو و من بزودی باران می فرستم.»

¹And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.

²پس ایلیا براه افتاد و پیش اخاب رفت. قحطی در سامره بسیار شدید بود.

²And Elijah went to show himself unto Ahab. And there was a sore famine in Samaria.

³اخاب عوبَدیا را که ناظر قصر شاه بود بحضور خود خواست. (عوبَدیا ایمان راسخی به خداوند داشت.

³And Ahab called Obadiah, which was the governor of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly:

⁴وقتی ایزابل می خواست انبیای خداوند را بکشد، عوبَدیا یکصد نفر شانرا در دو مغاره پنهان کرد و برای شان نان و آب می بُرد.)

⁴For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)

⁵اخاب به عوبَدیا گفت: «بیائید که به تمام چشمه های آب و جوی های کشور برویم، شاید علف پیدا کنیم تا اسپها و قاطرها را زنده نگهداریم و یا اقلاً بتوانیم از مردن یک تعداد حیوانات جلوگیری کنیم.»

⁵And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all brooks: peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.

⁶پس موافقه شد که چه کسی به کدام حصۀ آن سرزمین برای تحقیق و جستجوی علف برود. اخاب تنها به یک راه رفت و عوبَدیا هم تنها براه دیگری حرکت کرد.

⁶So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

⁷عوبَدیا در راه خود با ایلیا برخورد. او را شناخت و روی بخاک افتاد و گفت: «آقای من ایلیا، این تو هستی؟»

⁷And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou that my lord Elijah?

⁸ایلیا جواب داد: «بلی من هستم. برو به آقایت بگو ایلیا اینجا آمده است.»

⁸And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

⁹عوبَدیا گفت: «من چه گناهی کرده ام که مرا به دست اخاب برای کشتن می دهی؟

⁹And he said, What have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?

¹⁰خداوند، خدای تو شاهد است که پادشاه در بین همه مردم کشورهای جهان در جستجوی تو بوده است و هر باری که به او می گفتند: «ایلیا اینجا نیست.» اخاب، پادشاه مردم آنجا را مجبور می ساخت قسم بخورند که تو در آنجا نیستی.

¹⁰As the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.

¹¹حالا تو می گوئی برو بگو: «ایلیا اینجا است.»

¹¹And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

¹²و به مجردیکه من از پیشت بروم، روح خداوند ترا بجائی که من ندانم خواهد برد و اگر من بروم و به اخاب بگویم و او بیاید و ترا نیابد، او مرا می کشد. هرچند این خدمتگارت از زمان طفلی بندۀ باوفای خداوند بوده است.

¹²And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth.

¹³آیا به آقایم نگفته اند که وقتی ایزابل انبیای خداوند را می کشت من چه کردم؟ من یکصد نفر شان را در دو مغاره پنهان کردم و آب و نان شان را تهیه می نمودم.

¹³Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the LORD's prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

¹⁴و حالا می گوئی که بروم و به پادشاه بگویم که ایلیا اینجا است. اگر این کار را بکنم او مرا می کشد.»

¹⁴And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here: and he shall slay me.

¹⁵ایلیا گفت: «به خداوند قادر مطلق، که در حضورش ایستاده ام قسم می خورم که من خودم امروز پیش او می روم.»

¹⁵And Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself unto him to day.

¹⁶پس عوبَدیا پیش اخاب رفت و از آمدن ایلیا به او خبر داد؛ و اخاب بدیدن ایلیا آمد.

¹⁶So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him: and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

¹⁷وقتی اخاب ایلیا را دید، به او گفت: «پس این تو هستی که اینهمه بدبختی ها را بر سر مردم اسرائیل می آوری؟»

¹⁷And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?

¹⁸ایلیا گفت: «نی، من ضرری به مردم اسرائیل نرسانده ام، بلکه تو و خاندان پدرت مسئول هستید، زیرا شما اوامر خداوند را بجا نیاوردید و بعوض پیرو بَعلها شدید.

¹⁸And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.

¹⁹حالا تمام مردم اسرائیل را جمع کن و پیش من بر کوه کَرمَل بیاور. همچنین چهار صد و پنجاه نبی بعل و چهار صد نبی اَشیره را که بر خوان ایزابل غذا می خورند دعوت کن که بیایند.»

¹⁹Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table.

²⁰پس اخاب به تمام مردم اسرائیل پیام فرستاد که همراه با انبیاء بر کوه کَرمَل جمع شوند.

²⁰So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.

²¹آنگاه ایلیا پیش آن ها رفت و گفت: «تا چه وقت در تردید و دو دلی بسر می برید؟ اگر خداوند خدا است پیرو او باشید! اما اگر بعل را بحیث خدای خود قبول دارید، پس بروید و از او پیروی کنید.» مردم هیچ جوابی به او ندادند.

²¹And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

²²ایلیا به مردم گفت: «من یگانه نبی خداوند هستم که باقی مانده ام و انبیای بعل چهار صد و پنجاه نفر اند.

²²Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

²³دو گاو بیاورید، انبیای بعل یکی از آن دو گاو را ذبح و قطعه قطعه کنند و بر هیزم بگذارند، اما آتش روشن نکنند. من گاو دیگر را به همان ترتیب بر هیزم می گذارم و آتش روشن نمی کنم.

²³Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:

²⁴آنگاه شما پیش خدای خود دعا کنید و من بحضور خداوند دعا می کنم. آن خدائی که دعا را قبول نماید، خدای حقیقی و واقعی است.» مردم همگی به این پیشنهاد موافقه کردند.

²⁴And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

²⁵بعد ایلیا به انبیای بعل گفت: «حالا یک گاو را برای خود انتخاب کنید، زیرا تعداد شما زیاد است. پیش خدای تان دعا نمائید، اما آتش روشن نکنید.»

²⁵And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.

²⁶پس آن ها یک گاو را گرفته آنرا تهیه نمودند و تا چاشت پیش بعل دعا کردند و گفتند: «ای بعل، دعای ما را قبول کن.» اما هیچ صدا یا جوابی نشنیدند. بعد آن ها به دَور قربانگاهی که ساخته بودند به جست و خیز پرداختند.

²⁶And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.

²⁷هنگام ظهر ایلیا آن ها را مسخره کرد و گفت: «به آواز بلند دعا کنید، چونکه او خدای تان است. شاید او به فکر فرو رفته باشد، ممکن است به یک جای خلوت رفته یا در راه سفر است، یا شاید خوابیده باشد و باید بیدارش کنید.»

²⁷And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.

²⁸آن ها با آواز بلند دعا کردند و قرار رسوم خویش، خود را با تیغ و نیزه زخمی ساختند بطوریکه خون از بدن شان جاری شد.

²⁸And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.

²⁹پس از آنکه روز از نیمه گذشت تا وقت ادای مراسم قربانی نبوت کردند، باز هم نه آوازی آمد و نه جوابی شنیده شد.

²⁹And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

³⁰آنگاه ایلیا به مردم گفت: «نزدیک بیائید.» و همه مردم به او نزدیک شدند. او اول قربانگاه خداوند را که ویران شده بود ترمیم کرد.

³⁰And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.

³¹بعد دوازده سنگ را، قرار تعداد دوازده قبیلۀ پسران یعقوب برداشت. چون خداوند به یعقوب فرمود: «نام تو بعد از این اسرائیل باشد.»

³¹And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:

³²ایلیا با آن سنگها قربانگاهی برای خداوند ساخت. بعد به دَور قربانگاه یک جویچه کَند که گنجایش دو پیمانۀ بزر را داشت.

³²And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.

³³آنگاه هیزم را بالای هم به ترتیب قرار داد و گاو را قطعه قطعه کرده بر هیزم گذاشت و گفت: «چهار خُم را از آب پُر کنید و بر قربانی سوختنی و هیزم بریزید.»

³³And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.

³⁴سپس گفت: «بار دوم این کار را بکنید.» و آن ها بار دوم آن کار را کردند. گفت که بار سوم هم بکنید و آن ها بار سوم آب را بر قربانی و هیزم ریختند.

³⁴And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.

³⁵تا که آب از سر قربانگاه جاری شد و جویچه را پُر کرد.

³⁵And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.

³⁶چون وقت ادای مراسم قربانی رسید، اِیلیای نبی نزدیک آمد و گفت: «خداوندا، خدای ابراهیم، اسحاق و اسرائیل، امروز نشان بده که تو خدای اسرائیل هستی، من بندۀ تو ام و همۀ این کارها را بفرمان تو کرده ام.

³⁶And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

³⁷دعای مرا قبول فرما! ای خداوند، دعایم را اجابت کن! تا این مردم بدانند که تو ای خداوند، خدا هستی و آن ها را بسوی خود بازگردانیدی.»

³⁷Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.

³⁸آنگاه خداوند آتشی فرستاد و قربانی، هیزم، سنگ و خاک را بلعید و حتی آب جویچه را هم خشکانید.

³⁸Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

³⁹وقتی مردم این حادثه را دیدند، همه به سجده افتادند و گفتند: «خداوند واقعاً خدا است! خداوند خدای برحق است!»

³⁹And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.

⁴⁰ایلیا به مردم گفت: «انبیای بعل را دستگیر کنید؛ حتی یکی آن ها را هم موقع ندهید که بگریزد.» پس مردم آن ها را دستگیر کرده بحضور ایلیا در کنار جوی قیشون آوردند و ایلیا آن ها را در آنجا کشت.

⁴⁰And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

⁴¹بعد ایلیا به اخاب گفت: «حالا برو بخور و بنوش، زیرا صدای باران شدید می آید.»

⁴¹And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.

⁴²وقتی اخاب برای خوردن رفت ایلیا بسر کوه کَرمَل رفت. در آنجا بزمین نشست و سر خود را بین زانوان خود گذاشت.

⁴²So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,

⁴³بعد به خادم خود گفت: «بالا تر برو و بسوی بحر نگاه کن.» او رفت، دید و برگشت و گفت: «من چیزی را ندیدم.» ایلیا گفت: «بازهم برو.» و به همین ترتیب هفت بار او را فرستاد.

⁴³And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.

⁴⁴در مرتبۀ هفتم خادمش آمد و گفت: «یک تکه ابر بقدر یک کف دست انسان از سطح بحر بر می خیزد.» ایلیا گفت: «فوراً برو و به اخاب بگو: عراده ات را سوار شو بزودی بخانه ات برگرد، مبادا باران مانع رفتن تو گردد!»

⁴⁴And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down that the rain stop thee not.

⁴⁵و لحظه ای بعد آسمان را ابر تاریک پوشاند. باد سختی وزید و باران شدید شروع به باریدن کرد. اخاب بر عرادۀ خود سوار شد و به یِزرعیل رفت.اما خداوند به ایلیا قدرت خاصی داد. او کمر خود را بست و دویده به یِزرعیل رسید.

⁴⁵And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.

⁴⁶اما خداوند به ایلیا قدرت خاصی داد. او کمر خود را بست و دویده به یِزرعیل رسید.

⁴⁶And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
