¹شائول سی ساله بود که پادشاه شد و چهل سال بر اسرائیل سلطنت نمود.

¹Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,

²او سه هزار نفر از مردان اسرائیلی را انتخاب کرد که از آن جمله دو هزار نفر با او در مِخماس و کوهستان بیت ئیل بودند و یک هزار نفر هم همراه یُوناتان به جبعۀ بنیامین رفتند و بقیه را به خانه های شان فرستاد.

²Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.

³یُوناتان به پهره داران فلسطینی ها که در جِبعَه بودند حمله برده آن ها را شکست داد. خبر این حمله بزودی در سراسر سرزمین فلسطینی ها پخش شد و شائول امر کرد که این خبر جنگ را به همه جا با صدای شيپور اعلان کنند تا تمام عبرانیان بشنوند.

³And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.

⁴چون مردم اسرائیل اطلاع یافتند که شائول پهره داران فلسطینی ها را کشته است و فلسطینی ها نام اسرائیل را بزشتی و نفرت یاد می کنند، بنابران تمام قوم اسرائیل در جِلجال بحالت آماده باش جمع شدند.

⁴And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.

⁵فلسطینی ها سی هزار عرادۀ جنگی، شش هزار سوار و یک لشکری که تعداد آن مثل ریگ دریا بیشمار بود، برای جنگ با اسرائیل آماده کرده در مِخماس، در شرق بیت آوَن، اردو زدند.

⁵And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Bethaven.

⁶مردم اسرائیل از دیدن آن سپاه عظیم خود را بیچاره دیدند و دل و جرأت خود را از دست دادند و در مغاره ها، بین صخره ها، قبرها و کاریزها پنهان شدند.

⁶When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.

⁷بعضی از آن ها از دریای اُردن گذشته به سرزمین جاد و جلعاد پناه بردند. در این وقت شائول در جلعاد بود و همراهانش از عاقبت جنگ می ترسیدند.

⁷And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

⁸سموئیل قبلاً به شائول گفته بود که برای آمدن او یک هفته انتظار بکشد. چون آمدن او طول کشید، مردم کم کم از او پراگنده می شدند.

⁸And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.

⁹بنابران، شائول گفت: «قربانی های سوختنی و سلامتی را بحضور من بیاورید.»

⁹And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.

¹⁰بعد از آنکه مراسم قربانی بجا آورده شد، سموئیل آمد و شائول به استقبال او رفت.

¹⁰And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.

¹¹سموئیل پرسید: «این چه کاری بود که تو کردی؟» شائول جواب داد: «چون دیدم که تو در وقت معین نیامدی و مردم هم از اطراف من پراگنده می شدند؛ برعلاوه فلسطینی ها هم در مِخماس آمادۀ حمله بودند،

¹¹And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;

¹²لهذا، با خود گفتم که چون فلسطینی ها به زودی در جِلجال بر من حمله می آورند و همچنین رضامندی خداوند را هم کسب نکرده ام، مجبور شدم که قربانی سوختنی خود را تقدیم کنم.»

¹²Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.

¹³سموئیل گفت: «تو کار احمقانه ای کردی و امر خداوند، خدایت را بجا نیاوردی. خداوند می خواست که سلطنت تو و اولاده ات برای همیشه برقرار باشد،

¹³And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.

¹⁴مگر چون تو از امر او اطاعت نکردی، سلطنت تو زیاد دوام نمی کند. خداوند شخص دلخواه خود را یافته است و او را مأمور کرده است که بر قوم برگزیدۀ او حکومت کند.»

¹⁴But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.

¹⁵بعد سموئیل از جِلجال به جِبعَه، در سرزمین بنیامین رفت. وقتی شائول همراهان خود را شمار کرد دید که تنها ششصد نفر باقی مانده بودند.

¹⁵And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.

¹⁶شائول و پسرش، یُوناتان و همراهان شان در جبعۀ بنیامین ماندند و فلسطینی ها در مِخماس اردو زدند.

¹⁶And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.

¹⁷سپاه فلسطینی ها به سه فرقه تقسیم شدند. یک فرقه از راه عُفره به سرزمین شوعل حرکت کرد،

¹⁷And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual:

¹⁸فرقۀ دوم بسوی بیت حورون و سومی به طرف سرحدی که مشرف به درۀ زِبُیم در نزدیکی بیابان است، براه افتاد.

¹⁸And another company turned the way to Bethhoron: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.

¹⁹در آن روزها هیچ آهنگری در کشور اسرائیل یافت نمی شد، زیرا فلسطینی ها به عبرانیان اجازه نمی دادند که شمشیر و نیزه بسازند.

¹⁹Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:

²⁰بنابران، هرگاه مردم اسرائیل به تیز کردن بیل، قلبه، تبر یا داس ضرورت می داشتند، باید پیش آهنگران فلسطینی ها می رفتند.

²⁰But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock.

²¹اجورۀ تیز کردن بیل و قلبه دو برابر اجورۀ تیز کردن داس و تبر بود.

²¹Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.

²²و در روز جنگ، بغیر از شائول و یُوناتان هیچ یک از همراهان شان شمشیر یا نیزه ای نداشت.در عین حال لشکر فلسطینی ها گذرگاه کوهستانی مِخماس را در تصرف خود داشتند.

²²So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.

²³در عین حال لشکر فلسطینی ها گذرگاه کوهستانی مِخماس را در تصرف خود داشتند.

²³And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.
