1اکنون من پولُس بخاطر تواضع و ملایمت مسیح، شخصاً از شما درخواست می کنم ـ بلی، همان پولُس که بنا به گفتۀ بعضی از شما، پیش روی شما فروتن و ملایم ولی دور از شما گستاخ هستم ـ
1Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you:
2از شما التماس می کنم که مرا مجبور نسازید، وقتی با شما هستم با گستاخی با شما رفتار کنم، چون تصمیم گرفتم در مقابل آن ها که گمان می کنند، ما با انگیزه های دنیوی عمل می کنیم، گستاخ باشم!
2But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.
3اگر چه ما در این دنیا به سر می بریم، اما جنگی که می کنیم دنیوی و جسمانی نیست.
3For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
4اسلحۀ جنگ ما سلاح های دنیایی نیست، بلکه از طرف خدا قدرت دارد تا قلعه ها را ویران کند.
4(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
5ما هر نوع استدلال و هر ادعای تکبر آمیز را که در مقابل معرفت خدا قرار بگیرد از بین می بریم و تمام افکار و خیالات را تحت فرمان مسیح در می آوریم.
5Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
6وقتی اطاعت شما نسبت به ما کامل شود، آن وقت کسانی را که نافرمانی می کنند، مجازات خواهیم کرد.
6And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.
7به آنچه در پیش چشمان شما قرار دارد توجه کنید! آیا کسی در میان شما مطمئن است که به مسیح تعلق دارد؟ آن شخص باید قبول کند که ما هم مثل او متعلق به مسیح هستیم.
7Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's.
8شاید من دربارۀ اختیاراتی که خدا به من داده است، بیش از اندازه به خود فخر کرده باشم، ولی پشیمان نیستم. زیرا خدا این قدرت و اختیار را برای بنای شما به من داده است و نه برای خرابی شما!
8For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed:
9فکر نکنید که می خواهم با رساله های خود شما را بترسانم.
9That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters.
10شاید کسی بگوید: «رساله های او سخت و مؤثرند ولی حضور او بی اثر و بیانش تعریفی ندارد.»
10For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.
11این اشخاص خاطر جمع باشند که آنچه را از دور به وسیلۀ نامه می نویسم، هر وقت بیایم همان را به عمل خواهم آورد و تفاوتی در بین نخواهد بود.
11Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present.
12البته ما جرأت آن را نداریم خود را با کسانی که خود را اینقدر بزرگ می دانند مقایسه کنیم و یا در یک سطح قرار دهیم. وقتی آن ها خود را با یکدیگر می سنجند و با همدیگر مقایسه می کنند، نشان می دهند که چقدر احمق هستند!
12For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.
13و اما ما نمی توانیم از آن حدی که برای ما تعیین شده، بیشتر فخر کنیم؛ یعنی به میزان خدمتی که خدا به ما سپرده است و آن شامل خدمت شما نیز می شود.
13But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.
14وقتی ادعا می کنیم که کلیسای شما هم در محدودۀ وظیفه ما قرار دارد از حد خود تجاوز نمی کنیم، زیرا ما اولین اشخاص بودیم که انجیل مسیح را به شما رسانیدیم.
14For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ:
15ما از آنچه دیگران در خارج از محدودۀ وظیفه ما انجام داده اند، به خود فخر نمی کنیم؛ بلکه امیدواریم که ایمان شما رشد کند و ما بتوانیم دامنۀ خدمت خود را وسیع تر سازیم،
15Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men's labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,
16تا سرانجام بتوانیم انجیل را در کشورهایی که در آن سوی سرزمین شماست، اعلام نمائیم و آن وقت لازم نیست که ما به کاری که قبلاً در حوزۀ وظیفه شخصی دیگر انجام شده است، فخر کنیم.
16To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man's line of things made ready to our hand.
17چنانکه کلام خدا می فرماید: «هرکه بخواهد فخر کند، به خداوند فخر نماید.»زیرا نه آنکه خودستایی کند، بلکه آن که خداوند از او تعریف کند، مورد قبول خدا واقع می گردد.
17But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
18زیرا نه آنکه خودستایی کند، بلکه آن که خداوند از او تعریف کند، مورد قبول خدا واقع می گردد.
18For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.
