1از طرف یکی از رهبران کلیسا به آن خانم خانۀ برگزیدۀ خدا و فرزندان او، که نه تنها من واقعاً آن ها را دوست دارم، بلکه همۀ آنانی که حقیقت را می شناسند،
1The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;
2زیرا حقیقت در میان ما بوده و هست و تا ابد با ما خواهد بود.
2For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.
3خدای پدر و عیسی مسیح پسر او، فیض، رحمت و سلامتی به ما عنایت فرماید تا این برکات همیشه در حقیقت و محبت با ما باشد.
3Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
4وقتی شنیدم که بعضی از فرزندان تو همان طور که پدر ما حکم کرده است، مطابق حقیقت زندگی می کنند، خیلی خوشحال شدم.
4I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.
5و اکنون ای خانم خانه، خواهشی از تو دارم و آن این است که به یکدیگر محبت داشته باشیم. من حکم تازه ای به تو نمی دهم، بلکه همان حکمی است که از اول شنیدیم.
5And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.
6منظور من از محبت این است که مطابق احکام خدا زندگی کنیم. آن حکمی که شما از اول شنیدید، این است که باید در محبت زندگی کنید.
6And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.
7فریبکاران بسیاری به سرتاسر دنیا رفته اند، یعنی اشخاصی که قبول نمی کنند که عیسی مسیح در جسم ظاهر شد. اینها فریبکار هستند! اینها «دشمن مسیح» هستند!
7For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
8متوجه باشید مبادا تمام کارهایی را که ما برای شما کرده ایم، باطل سازید. برعکس، ما می خواهیم که شما اجر خود را کاملاً در یافت کنید.
8Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.
9هرکه تعالیمش مطابق تعالیم مسیح نیست بلکه چیزهای دیگر تعلیم می دهد؛ خدا با او نیست. اما کسانی که به تعلیم مسیح وفادار هستند، هم خدای پدر را دارند و هم پسر را.
9Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
10اگر کسی نزد شما بیاید و این تعلیم درست را نیاورد، او را در خانۀ خود نپذیرید و حتی به او خوش آمد هم نگوئید،
10If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
11زیرا هر که به او خوش آمد گوید، در اعمال شریرانۀ او همدست شناخته می شود.
11For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.
12اگر چه مطالب بسیاری هست که باید به شما بنویسم، اما فکر می کنم بهتر است آن ها را با قلم و رنگ روی کاغذ نیاورم و به جای آن امیدوارم شما را شخصاً ببینم و روبرو با شما صحبت کنم تا همۀ ما کاملاً شاد شویم.فرزندان خواهر برگزیدۀ تو سلام می رسانند.
12Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.
13فرزندان خواهر برگزیدۀ تو سلام می رسانند.
13The children of thy elect sister greet thee. Amen.
