1بعد داود تمام لشکر خود را جمع کرد و صاحب منصبانی را به رتبه های مختلف تعیین نمود.
1And David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds over them.
2یک سوم لشکر را بسرکردگی یوآب، یک سوم شانرا تحت فرماندهی ابیشای پسر زِرویه، برادر یوآب و یک سوم آن ها را به رهبری اتای جتی براه انداخت و پادشاه به مردم گفت: «من هم البته با شما می آیم.»
2And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.
3اما آن ها به او گفتند: «نی، تو باید جائی نروی. زیرا اگر ما بگریزیم برای آن ها فرقی نمی کند، چون آن ها ترا می خواهند. ارزش تو برای ما زیادتر از هزار نفر است. لهذا بهتر است که در شهر بمانی و اگر به کمکی احتیاج داشتیم برای ما بفرست.»
3But the people answered, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but now thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou succor us out of the city.
4پادشاه گفت: «بسیار خوب، هرچه را شما صلاح می دانید، من موافقم.» پس داود به دروازۀ شهر ایستاد و همگی بدسته های صد نفری و هزار نفری از شهر بیرون رفتند.
4And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate side, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands.
5پادشاه به یوآب، ابیشای و اتای گفت: «بخاطر من با ابشالوم که جوان است به ملایمت رفتار کنید.» همه مردم این فرمانی را که داود دربارۀ ابشالوم داد شنیدند.
5And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.
6پس سپاه داود برای مقابله با لشکر اسرائیل به صحرا رفت و جنگ در جنگل افرایم شروع شد.
6So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim;
7در نتیجه سپاه داود لشکر اسرائیل را شکست داد و کشتار آنروز بسیار زیاد و در حدود بیست هزار نفر بود.
7Where the people of Israel were slain before the servants of David, and there was there a great slaughter that day of twenty thousand men.
8جنگ در سراسر کشور گسترش یافت. تعداد مردمیکه در جنگل گم شدند زیادتر از آنهائی بود که با دم شمشیر از بین رفتند.
8For the battle was there scattered over the face of all the country: and the wood devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.
9در حین جنگ، ابشالوم با چند نفر از خادمان داود برخورد. پس بر قاطر خود سوار شد و فرار کرد. قاطر زیر شاخه های یک درخت بزرگ بلوط رفت. سر ابشالوم میان شاخه ها گیر شد و او در بین زمین و هوا آویزان ماند. قاطر از زیر پایش رفت و به دویدن ادامه داد.
9And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away.
10شخصی او را در آن حال دید و به یوآب خبر داده گفت: «من ابشالوم را دیدم که از درخت بلوط آویزان بود.»
10And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak.
11یوآب از او پرسید: «چه گفتی؟ تو او را در آنجا دیدی و نکشتی؟ اگر او را می کشتی من ترا ده سکۀ نقره و یک کمربند می دادم.»
11And Joab said unto the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest him, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten shekels of silver, and a girdle.
12اما آن مرد به او گفت: «اگر هزار سکۀ نقره هم می دادی، دست خود را بر سر پادشاه بلند نمی کردم، زیرا شنیدم که داود به تو و ابیشای و اتای چه امر کرد. او گفت که به خاطر او به ابشالوم جوان صدمه ای نرسانیم.
12And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand, yet would I not put forth mine hand against the king's son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.
13و اگر من به پادشاه خیانت می کردم و پسرش را می کشتم، از پادشاه مخفی نمی ماند و اولتر خودت بر ضد من بر می خاستی.»
13Otherwise I should have wrought falsehood against mine own life: for there is no matter hid from the king, and thou thyself wouldest have set thyself against me.
14یوآب گفت: «نمی خواهم با این حرفها وقت خود را ضایع کنم.» آنگاه سه تیر را گرفت و به قلب ابشالوم، در حالیکه هنوز زنده بود، فرو کرد.
14Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.
15بعد ده نفر از سلاحبردار یوآب بدور ابشالوم حلقه زدند و او را کشتند.
15And ten young men that bare Joab's armor compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him.
16سپس یوآب سرنا نواخت و همه لشکر از تعقیب اسرائیل دست کشیدند.
16And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for Joab held back the people.
17آنگاه جسد ابشالوم را در جنگل برده در چاه عمیقی انداختند و توده ای از سنگها را بروی آن انباشتند. بعد سپاه اسرائیل به خانه های خود فرار کردند.
17And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the wood, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him: and all Israel fled every one to his tent.
18ابشالوم وقتی زنده بود مُناری برای خود در وادی شاه ساخته بود، زیرا می گفت: «من پسری ندارم که نام مرا زنده نگهدارد.» بنابران، آنرا بنام خود، یعنی منار ابشالوم نامید که تا به امروز به همان نام یاد می شود.
18Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is in the king's dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Absalom's place.
19بعد اخیمعص پسر صادوق گفت: «حالا می روم و به پادشاه مژده می دهم که خداوند او را از دست دشمنانش نجات داد.»
19Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that the LORD hath avenged him of his enemies.
20یوآب به او گفت: «نی، تو نباید امروز این مژده را به او بدهی. یکروز دیگر این کار را بکن، زیرا خبر مرگ پسرش خبر خوشی برای پادشاه نخواهد بود.»
20And Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not bear tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day: but this day thou shalt bear no tidings, because the king's son is dead.
21و یوآب به مرد سودانی گفت: «تو برو آنچه را که دیدی به پادشاه خبر بده.» مرد سودانی تعظیم کرد و براه افتاد.
21Then said Joab to Cushy, Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And Cushy bowed himself unto Joab, and ran.
22اخیمعص باز به یوآب گفت: «خواهش می کنم بگذار که من هم بدنبال آن سودانی بروم.» یوآب گفت: «فرزندم، حالا رفتن تو فایده ای ندارد، زیرا خبر زیادتری نیست که تو ببری.»
22Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab, But howsoever, let me, I pray thee, also run after Cushy. And Joab said, Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou hast no tidings ready?
23اخیمعص گفت: «بهر حال من می خواهم بروم.» بالاخره یوآب به او اجازه داده گفت: «بسیار خوب، برو.» آنگاه اخیمعص از راه کوتاه وادی رفت و پیش از مرد سودانی به آنجا رسید.
23But howsoever, said he, let me run. And he said unto him, Run. Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and overran Cushy.
24داود پیش دروازۀ شهر نشسته بود. وقتی یکی از محافظین به بالای دیوار بسر وظیفۀ خود رفت، مردی را دید که یکه و تنها دویده بطرف آن ها می آید.
24And David sat between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof over the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone.
25محافظ به داود خبر داد. پادشاه گفت: «اگر تنها است حتماً خبری آورده است.» وقتی او نزدیکتر آمد،
25And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth. And he came apace, and drew near.
26محافظ شخص دیگری را دید که به طرف او می آید. محافظ صدا کرد: «یکنفر دیگر هم می آید.» پادشاه گفت: «البته او هم خبر زیادتری با خود آورده است.»
26And the watchman saw another man running: and the watchman called unto the porter, and said, Behold another man running alone. And the king said, He also bringeth tidings.
27محافظ گفت: «شخص اولی مثل اخیمعص می دود.» پادشاه گفت: «او شخص خوبی است و خبر خوش می آورد.»
27And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings.
28اخیمعص به پادشاه نزدیک شد و پس از سلام و درود او را تعظیم کرده گفت: «سپاس بر خداوند، خدایت که تو را بر دشمنانت پیروزی بخشید.»
28And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said, Blessed be the LORD thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.
29پادشاه پرسید: «آیا ابشالوم جوان سالم است؟» اخیمعص جواب داد: «وقتی یوآب مرا و خادم شاه را فرستاد، در آنجا هنگامۀ بزرگی را برپا دیدم، اما ندانستم که سبب آن چه بود.»
29And the king said, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king's servant, and me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was.
30پادشاه گفت: «صبر کن، تو همینجا باش.» پس اخیمعص به یکطرف ایستاد.
30And the king said unto him, Turn aside, and stand here. And he turned aside, and stood still.
31سپس کوشی، آن غلام سودانی، رسید و گفت: «چشم آقایم، پادشاه روشن! زیرا خداوند امروز ترا از شر آنهائی که در مقابل تو شورش کردند، نجات داد.»
31And, behold, Cushy came; and Cushy said, Tidings, my lord the king: for the LORD hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.
32پادشاه پرسید: «آیا ابشالوم جوان سالم است؟» آن مرد جواب داد: «خداوند همه دشمنان پادشاه و تمام آنهائی را که بر ضد او برخاستند بروز آن جوان گرفتار کند.»پادشاه بسیار غمگین شد و به اطاق بالای دروازه رفت و گفت: «ای فرزندم، ابشالوم، ای پسرم ابشالوم! ای کاش من بجای تو می مردم! ای ابشالوم، فرزندم، پسرم!»
32And the king said unto Cushy, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Cushy answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is.
33پادشاه بسیار غمگین شد و به اطاق بالای دروازه رفت و گفت: «ای فرزندم، ابشالوم، ای پسرم ابشالوم! ای کاش من بجای تو می مردم! ای ابشالوم، فرزندم، پسرم!»
33And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!
