¹پولُس به همراهی سیلاس به دربه و لِستره رسید. در شهر لِستره یکی از شاگردان به نام تیموتاوس زندگی می کرد که مادرش مسیحی یهودی نژاد و پدرش یونانی بود.

¹Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek:

²برادران ساکن لِستره و قونیه از او تعریف می کردند

²Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.

³و پولُس می خواست او را همراه خود ببرد، پس بخاطر یهودیان آن دیار تیموتاوس را سنت نمود زیرا همه می دانستند که پدرش یونانی بود.

³Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek.

⁴آنها همچنان که شهر به شهر می گشتند، تصمیماتی را که رسولان و رهبران در اورشلیم گرفته بودند به ایمانداران می سپردند تا مطابق آن عمل کنند.

⁴And as they went through the cities, they delivered them the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles and elders which were at Jerusalem.

⁵از اینرو کلیسا ها در ایمان تقویت می یافتند و روز به روز به تعداد شان افزوده می شد.

⁵And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily.

⁶وقتی آن ها از ولایت فریجیه و ولایت غلاتیه می گذشتند، روح القدس مانع شد که پیام خدا را به ولایت آسیا ابلاغ نمایند

⁶Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,

⁷و وقتی به سرحد میسیه رسیدند، کوشش می کردند به ولایت بِطونیه بروند، اما روح عیسی به ایشان اجازه نداد.

⁷After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.

⁸بنابراین از میسیه گذشتند و به شهر ترواس آمدند.

⁸And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas.

⁹در همان شب پولُس در خواب دید که شخصی مقدونی ایستاده بود و با التماس به او می گفت: «به مقدونیه بیا و ما را یاری کن.»

⁹And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.

¹⁰همینکه پولُس این رؤیا را دید، ما عازم مقدونیه شدیم. زیرا شکی نداشتیم که خدا ما را خواسته بود که به ایشان نیز بشارت دهیم.

¹⁰And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.

¹¹در ترواس سوار کشتی شدیم و مستقیماً به جزیرۀ ساموتراکی رفتیم و روز بعد رهسپار نیاپولیس شدیم.

¹¹Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis;

¹²از آنجا به فیلپی که یک مستعمرۀ رومی و شهری در بخش اول ولایت مقدونیه است رفتیم. در این شهر چند روزی اقامت کردیم.

¹²And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days.

¹³روز سَبَت از دروازۀ شهر خارج شدیم و به کنار دریای که گمان می کردیم محل دعای یهودیان باشد رفتیم. در آنجا نشستیم و با زنانی که جمع شده بودند، صحبت کردیم.

¹³And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.

¹⁴یکی از شنوندگان ما زنی بود به نام لیدیه، که پارچه های ارغوانی می فروخت. او از اهالی شهر طیاتیرا و زنی خدا پرست بود. خداوند قلب او را باز کرد تا تعلیم پولُس را بپذیرد

¹⁴And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.

¹⁵و هنگامی که او و خانواده اش تعمید گرفتند، با خواهش و تمنا به ما گفت: «اگر مرا نسبت به خداوند یک مؤمن حقیقی می دانید، بیائید و در منزل من بمانید.» و آنقدر اصرار کرد، که ما رفتیم.

¹⁵And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

¹⁶یک روز که به محل دعا می رفتیم به کنیزی برخورد کردیم که روح فالگیری و غیبگویی داشت و از این راه منافع زیادی نصیب اربابان خود کرده بود.

¹⁶And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:

¹⁷او به دنبال ما و پولُس افتاد و فریاد می کرد: «اینها غلامان خدای متعالند و راه رستگاری را به شما اعلام می نمایند.»

¹⁷The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.

¹⁸چند روز کارش همین بود تا بالاخره حوصله پولُس به سر آمده به سوی او برگشت و به آن روح گفت: «به نام عیسی مسیح به تو فرمان می دهم از او خارج شو.» و در همان لحظه از او خارج شد.

¹⁸And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

¹⁹همین که اربابان کنیز دیدند امید منافع خود را از دست داده اند، پولُس و سیلاس را گرفتند و کشان کشان به میدان شهر پیش بزرگان شهر بردند.

¹⁹And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers,

²⁰وقتی آنها را پیش مأموران رومی آوردند گفتند: «این مردان که یهودی هستند شهر ما را به هم می ریزند.

²⁰And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,

²¹ایشان رسومی را تبلیغ می کنند که قبول آن ها و عمل کردن به آن ها برای ما رومیان جایز نیست.»

²¹And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.

²²مردم نیز در این حمله به آنها پیوستند و مأموران لباسهای آنها را در آوردند و امر کردند آنها را چوب بزنند.

²²And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them.

²³بعد از لت و کوب زیاد آن ها را به زندان انداختند و به زندانبان امر سخت کردند که ایشان را با دقت تمام تحت نظر بگیرد.

²³And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:

²⁴با این امر زندانبان آنها را در داخل زندان محبوس کرد و پاهای ایشان را در کنده و زنجیر گذاشت.

²⁴Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

²⁵نزدیکی های نصف شب، پولُس و سیلاس به دعا مشغول بودند و به درگاه خدا سرودهای حمد می خواندند و زندانیان دیگر گوش می دادند، که

²⁵And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

²⁶ناگهان زلزلۀ شدیدی رخ داد، به طوریکه زندان را از تهداب به لرزه درآورد. تمام درهای زندان در همان لحظه باز شد و همه زنجیر ها به زمین افتادند.

²⁶And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.

²⁷وقتی زندانبان بیدار شد و درهای زندان را باز دید، شمشیر خود را کشید و چیزی نمانده بود که خود را بکشد؛ چون گمان می کرد زندانیان فرار کرده اند.

²⁷And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.

²⁸اما پولُس به صدای بلند گفت: «به خود ضرر نرسان، همۀ ما اینجا هستیم.»

²⁸But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.

²⁹زندانبان چراغی خواست و به عجله داخل اطاق شد و در حالی که از ترس می لرزید، پیش پاهای پولُس و سیلاس به زمین افتاد.

²⁹Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,

³⁰سپس آنها را بیرون آورد و گفت: «ای آقایان من چه باید بکنم که نجات یابم؟»

³⁰And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

³¹جواب دادند: «به عیسی خداوند ایمان آور که تو با اهل خانه ات نجات خواهی یافت.»

³¹And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

³²آنگاه پیام خداوند را به او و جمیع اهل خانه اش رسانیدند.

³²And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.

³³درست در همان موقع شب زندانبان آنها را بیرون آورد و زخمهای شانرا را شستشو نمود و فوراً او و خانواده اش تعمید گرفتند.

³³And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.

³⁴زندانبان ایشان را به خانه خود برد و برای ایشان غذا آورد و او و تمام اهل خانه اش از اینکه به خدا ایمان آورده بودند بی نهایت شاد گشتند.

³⁴And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.

³⁵همین که روز شد مأموران رومی چند نفر از نگهبانان را فرستادند و امر کردند که آنها را آزاد کنند.

³⁵And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go.

³⁶زندانبان این خبر را به پولُس رسانیده گفت: «مأموران رومی امر کرده اند که شما را آزاد کنیم، پس بفرمایید و به سلامت بروید.»

³⁶And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace.

³⁷پولُس در جواب گفت: «ایشان ما را که اتباع رومی هستیم در مقابل همه و بدون محاکمه چوب زدند و به زندان انداختند و حالا می خواهند ما را مخفیانه بیرون کنند. هرگز! خود شان بیایند و ما را بیرون ببرند.»

³⁷But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out.

³⁸نگهبانان گفتار پولُس را به اطلاع مأموران رسانیدند. وقتی آن ها شنیدند ایشان از اتباع روم هستند، بسیار ترسیدند

³⁸And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans.

³⁹و آمده از ایشان عذرخواهی کردند و آنها را تا بیرون زندان همراهی کردند و از آنها خواهش نمودند که شهر را ترک نمایند.به این ترتیب آن دو نفر از زندان بیرون آمده به خانۀ لیدیه رفتند و پس از اینکه برادران را دیدند و به ایشان دلگرمی دادند آنجا را ترک کردند.

³⁹And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city.

⁴⁰به این ترتیب آن دو نفر از زندان بیرون آمده به خانۀ لیدیه رفتند و پس از اینکه برادران را دیدند و به ایشان دلگرمی دادند آنجا را ترک کردند.

⁴⁰And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.
