¹ای قوم اسرائیل، به مرثیه ای که برای شما می خوانم گوش بدهید:

¹Hear ye this word which I take up against you, even a lamentation, O house of Israel.

²دختر باکرۀ اسرائیل از پا افتاده است و دیگر هرگز بر نمی خیزد. او فراموش شده است و کسی به کمک او نمی آید که او را از زمین برخیزاند.

²The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is forsaken upon her land; there is none to raise her up.

³خداوند متعال می فرماید: «از یک شهر یکهزار نفر به جنگ می روند، اما تنها یکصد نفر زنده بر می گردند. از شهر دیگری صد نفر فرستاده می شوند، ولی فقط ده نفر زنده می مانند.»

³For thus saith the Lord GOD; The city that went out by a thousand shall leave an hundred, and that which went forth by an hundred shall leave ten, to the house of Israel.

⁴خداوند به قوم اسرائیل می فرماید: «مرا بطلبید تا زنده بمانید.

⁴For thus saith the LORD unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:

⁵به بیت ئیل برای عبادت نروید، به جِلجال اجتماع نکنید و به بئرشِبع داخل نشوید، زیرا مردم جِلجال تبعید می گردند و مردم بیت ئیل نابود می شوند.»

⁵But seek not Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beersheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought.

⁶در طلب خداوند باشید تا زنده بمانید، در غیر آن غضب او مثل آتش شعله ور می شود و قوم اسرائیل را می سوزاند و مردم بیت ئیل را از بین می برد و کسی نمی تواند آن را خاموش سازد.

⁶Seek the LORD, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.

⁷شما محکوم به فنا هستید، زیرا عدالت را پایمال می کنید و مردم را از حق شان محروم می سازید.

⁷Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth,

⁸کسی که اجرام سماوی ثریا و جبار را بوجود آورد، تاریکی را به صبح روشن و روز را به شب تبدیل می کند، آب های بحر را جمع کرده بر زمین می باراند، نام او خداوند است.

⁸Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name:

⁹او نیرومندان را با قلعه های شان نابود می سازد.

⁹That strengtheneth the spoiled against the strong, so that the spoiled shall come against the fortress.

¹⁰شما از کسانی که پیرو عدالت و راستگو هستند، نفرت دارید.

¹⁰They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

¹¹بر مردم مسکین و فقیر ظلم می کنید و غلۀ شان را به زور می گیرید، بنابران، در خانه هائی که از سنگهای مُزَیَن بنا کرده اید، زندگی نمی کنید و از شراب تاکستان های زیبائی که غرس نموده اید نمی نوشید،

¹¹Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.

¹²زیرا من می دانم که گناهان زیاد و خطاهای بزرگی را مرتکب شده اید. به اشخاص راستکار آزار می رسانید، رشوت می گیرید و عدالت را از مردم مسکین بازمی دارید.

¹²For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.

¹³اما آن کسانی که شما از آن ها نفرت دارید، باید در آن مواقع عاقل و صابر باشند و سکوت کنند.

¹³Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time.

¹⁴پس نیکوئی کنید و از شرارت دست بکشید تا زنده بمانید. آنوقت خداوند، خدای قادر متعال، چنانکه ادعا می کنید، همراه شما و مددگار شما خواهد بود.

¹⁴Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.

¹⁵از بدی بپرهیزید و خوبی را دوست بدارید و در محاکم عدالت را برقرار سازید تا شاید خداوند قادر مطلق بر بازماندگان قوم رحم کند.

¹⁵Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

¹⁶خداوند متعال، خدای قادر مطلق می فرماید: «از تمام جاده های شهر صدای ناله و شیون بر می خیزد و حتی دهقانان دعوت می شوند تا با مرثیه خوانان نوحه گری کنند.

¹⁶Therefore the LORD, the God of hosts, the LORD, saith thus; Wailing shall be in all streets; and they shall say in all the highways, Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing.

¹⁷در تاکستانها نوحه و شیون برپا می شود، زیرا من برای مجازات شما می آیم.» خداوند فرموده است.

¹⁷And in all vineyards shall be wailing: for I will pass through thee, saith the LORD.

¹⁸وای بحال شما که در آرزوی فرارسیدن روز خداوند هستید. آن روز چه فایده ای برای شما خواهد داشت؟ زیرا در آن روز تاریکی را می بینید نه روشنی را.

¹⁸Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light.

¹⁹شما مثل کسی می باشید که از شیری فرار می کند و با خرسی روبرو می گردد. یا مانند کسی که به خانۀ خود داخل می شود و دست خود را بر دیوار می گذارد و مار او را می گزد.

¹⁹As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.

²⁰روز خداوند تاریکی مطلق را ایجاد می کند و اثری از روشنی دیده نمی شود. آن روز یک روز ظلمانی بوده نور و روشنائی بچشم نمی خورد.

²⁰Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?

²¹خداوند می فرماید: «من از عیدهای تان بیزارم و از محافل مذهبی شما نفرت دارم.

²¹I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies.

²²قربانی های سوختنی و هدایای آردی شما را نمی پذیرم و به قربانی حیوانات چاقی که جهت شکرگزاری می آورید توجهی ندارم.

²²Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.

²³سرود حمد خود را بگوش من نرسانید. نوای چنگ شما را نمی شنوم.

²³Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.

²⁴به عوض، بگذارید که عدالت مثل آب و انصاف مانند نهری همیشه در جریان باشد.

²⁴But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.

²⁵ای قوم اسرائیل، در مدت چهل سالی که در بیابان بودید، آیا برای من قربانی و هدیه می آوردید؟

²⁵Have ye offered unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?

²⁶نی، بلکه شما به پادشاه خدایان خود، یعنی سکوت و به کیوان، خدای ستارگان تان و به بتهائی که به دست خود ساخته بودید، زیادتر علاقه نشان می دادید.بنابران، من که خدای قادر مطلق هستم شما را به سرزمین دوردستی، در آن طرف دمشق تبعید می کنم.» این گفتۀ خداوند، خدای قادر مطلق است.

²⁶But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.

²⁷بنابران، من که خدای قادر مطلق هستم شما را به سرزمین دوردستی، در آن طرف دمشق تبعید می کنم.» این گفتۀ خداوند، خدای قادر مطلق است.

²⁷Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the LORD, whose name is The God of hosts.
