1فرزندان یعقوب (اسرائیل) که هر کدام با خانوادۀ خود همراه یعقوب به مصر رفتند اینها بودند:
1Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob.
2رئوبین، شمعون، لاوی، یهودا،
2Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,
3ایسَسکار، زبولون، بنیامین،
3Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
4دان، نفتالی، جاد و اَشیر.
4Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
5تعداد تمام کسانی که از نسل یعقوب بودند، هفتاد نفر بود. یوسف پسر او هم در مصر بود.
5And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.
6با گذشت زمان، یوسف و تمام برادران او و همچنین همه کسانی که از آن دوره بودند، مُردند.
6And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.
7ولی نسل آن ها، یعنی بنی اسرائیل دارای فرزندان بی شمار و نیرومند شدند و سراسر مصر را پُر کردند.
7And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.
8بعد از مدتی پادشاه جدیدی در مصر بر سر قدرت آمد که چیزی دربارۀ یوسف نمی دانست.
8Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.
9او به مردم گفت: «تعداد اسرائیلی ها خیلی زیاد شده و حتی از ما هم نیرومندتر شده اند.
9And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:
10اگر جنگی برپا شود، ممکن است آن ها با دشمنان ما متحد شوند و علیه ما بجنگند و از این کشور فرار کنند. پس ما باید چاره ای بسنجیم و نگذاریم تعداد آن ها از این بیشتر شود.»
10Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.
11بنابر این مصری ها کارفرمایانی برای اسرائیلی ها تعیین کردند تا با کارهای شاقه، آن ها را ناتوان و ضعیف سازند. آن ها شهرهای فیتوم و رعمسیس را جهت مرکز تدارکات برای فرعون ساختند.
11Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.
12اما هر چه بیشتر مصری ها بر اسرائیلی ها ظلم می کردند، تعداد اسرائیلی ها بیشتر می شد و همه جا را پُر می کردند. این وضع مصری ها را به وحشت انداخت.
12But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.
13بنابراین، مصری ها بالای بنی اسرائیل بیشتر فشار آوردند و آن ها را به غلامی گرفته به کارهای بسیار سخت، از قبیل گِلکاری و خشت مالی و زراعت وادار می ساختند و هیچ رحمی به آن ها نمی کردند، بطوری که زندگی را بر آن ها تلخ ساخته بودند.
13And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigor:
14پادشاهِ مصر، به قابله های عبرانی که نام های شان شِفره و فُوعَه بود، امر کرد و گفت:
14And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in mortar, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigor.
15«هنگامی که با زنهای عبرانی در وقت زایمان شان کمک می کنید، اگر نوزاد پسر باشد او را بکشید، ولی اگر دختر باشد او را زنده نگهدارید.»
15And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:
16اما قابله ها از خدا ترسیدند و از امر پادشاه اطاعت نکردند و نوزادان پسر را نکشتند.
16And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.
17پادشاه مصر قابله ها را احضار کرد و به آن ها گفت: «چرا این کار را کردید و پسرها را نکشتید؟»
17But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.
18قابله ها به فرعون گفتند: «زنان عبرانی موقع زائیدن مانند زنهای مصری ضعیف نیستند. آن ها به راحتی می زایند و پیش از آنکه ما برسیم نوزاد شان بدنیا می آید.»
18And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?
19چون قابله ها از خدا ترسیدند، خداوند به آن ها احسان کرد و آن ها خود شان دارای خانواده شدند.
19And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.
20و بنی اسرائیل هم مرتب زیادتر و قویتر می شدند.پس پادشاهِ مصر، به مصری ها فرمان داد تا هر پسر عبرانی را که به دنیا می آید به دریای نیل بیاندازند، ولی دختر ها را زنده نگهدارند.
20Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.
21پس پادشاهِ مصر، به مصری ها فرمان داد تا هر پسر عبرانی را که به دنیا می آید به دریای نیل بیاندازند، ولی دختر ها را زنده نگهدارند.
21And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.
22And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
