¹خداوند پیش درخت های مقدس ممری به ابراهیم ظاهر شد. ابراهیم در موقع گرمای روز در مقابل خیمۀ خودش نشسته بود.

¹And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;

²وقتی سر خود را بلند کرد، دید که سه مرد در پیشروی او ایستاده اند. همینکه آنها را دید برخاست، به طرف آن ها دوید تا از آن ها پذیرائی کند. ابراهیم در مقابل آن ها تعظیم و سجده کرد.

²And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,

³سپس به آن ها گفت: «ای آقایان، من در خدمت شما هستم، قبل از اینکه از اینجا بروید در خانۀ من توقف کنید.

³And said, My LORD, if now I have found favor in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:

⁴اجازه بدهید آب بیاورم تا پا های تان را بشوئید. شما می توانید در زیر این درخت استراحت کنید.

⁴Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree:

⁵من برای شما کمی غذا می آورم تا بخورید و برای بقیۀ سفر خود قوّت بگیرید. شما با آمدن به خانۀ من مرا سرفراز بسازید. پس اجازه بدهید تا در خدمت شما باشم.» آن ها جواب دادند: «بسیار تشکر. ما قبول می کنیم.»

⁵And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said.

⁶ابراهیم بزودی داخل خیمه رفت و به سارا گفت: «زود شو و یک اندازه از بهترین آرد را بگیر و چند تا نان بپز.»

⁶And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth.

⁷سپس به طرف گله دوید و یک گوسالۀ جوان و چاق را گرفت و به نوکر خود داد تا فوراً آنرا بپزد.

⁷And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetched a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it.

⁸پس مقداری مسکه و شیر و گوشت گوساله را که پخته بود پیش آن مردان گذاشت و همان جا زیر درخت شخصاً از آن ها پذیرائی کرد. آن ها از آن غذا خوردند

⁸And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat.

⁹و سپس از ابراهیم پرسیدند: «زن تو ساره کجا است؟» ابراهیم جواب داد: «او داخل خیمه است.»

⁹And they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent.

¹⁰یکی از آن ها گفت: «نُه ماه بعد بر می گردم در آن وقت زن تو ساره صاحب پسری می باشد.» ساره، نزدیک دروازۀ خیمه، پشت سر او ایستاده بود و گوش می داد.

¹⁰And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.

¹¹ابراهیم و سارا خیلی پیر بودند، و عادت ماهانۀ زنانگی ساره قطع شده بود.

¹¹Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.

¹²ساره در دل خود خندید و گفت: «حالا که من پیر شده ام، آیا می توانم در پیری خود این چنین خوشی را ببینم؟ در حالیکه شوهرم نیز پیر است.»

¹²Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?

¹³پس خداوند از ابراهیم پرسید: «چرا ساره خندید و گفت: «آیا حقیقتاً من می توانم صاحب فرزندی شوم در حالیکه خیلی پیر هستم؟»

¹³And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?

¹⁴آیا چیزی هست که برای خداوند مشکل باشد؟ همان طوری که گفتم نه ماه بعد می آیم و ساره دارای پسری خواهد بود.»

¹⁴Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.

¹⁵ساره از ترس انکار کرد و گفت: «من نخندیدم.» ولی او جواب داد: «تو خندیدی.»

¹⁵Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.

¹⁶آن مردان آنجا را ترک نموده و به طرف سدوم حرکت کردند. ابراهیم آن ها را تا یک حصۀ راه همراهی کرد.

¹⁶And the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.

¹⁷خداوند فرمود: «من چیزی را که می خواهم انجام بدهم از ابراهیم مخفی نمی کنم.

¹⁷And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;

¹⁸نسل او یک قوم بزرگ و قوی می شود. به وسیلۀ او من همۀ ملت ها را برکت می دهم.

¹⁸Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

¹⁹من او را برگزیدم تا به پسرانش و به نسل خود تعلیم بدهد که از من اطاعت کنند تا هر چه را که راست و درست است انجام دهند. اگر آن ها چنین کنند، من هر چه به ابراهیم وعده داده ام انجام خواهم داد.»

¹⁹For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

²⁰پس خداوند به ابراهیم فرمود: «شکایات زیاد علیه سدوم و عموره وجود دارد و گناهان آن ها بسیار زیاد شده است.

²⁰And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;

²¹من می روم تا ببینم آیا این شکایاتی که شنیده ام درست است یا نه؟»

²¹I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.

²²سپس آن دو مرد آنجا را ترک کردند و به طرف سدوم رفتند، ولی خداوند نزد ابراهیم ماند.

²²And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.

²³پس ابراهیم به حضور خداوند رفت و پرسید: «آیا تو واقعاً می خواهی راستکاران را با گناهکاران از بین ببری؟

²³And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?

²⁴اگر پنجاه نفر راستکار در آن شهر باشد، آیا تو همۀ شهر را نابود می کنی؟ آیا به خاطر آن پنجاه نفر از نابود کردن آن شهر صرف نظر نمی کنی؟

²⁴Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?

²⁵بدون شک تو راستکاران را با گناهکاران نمی کشی. این ممکن نیست. تو نمی توانی چنین کاری کنی. اگر بکنی راستکاران با گناهکاران مجازات می شوند. این غیر ممکن است. داور همۀ جهان باید با انصاف رفتار کند.»

²⁵That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?

²⁶خداوند جواب داد: «اگر من پنجاه نفر راستکار در شهر سدوم پیدا کنم، از گناه تمام شهر صرف نظر می کنم.»

²⁶And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.

²⁷ابراهیم دوباره گفت: «لطفاً از اینکه جرأت می کنم و به صحبت خود با خداوند ادامه می دهم، مرا ببخش. من فقط یک آدم خاکی هستم و حق ندارم چیزی بگویم.

²⁷And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the LORD, which am but dust and ashes:

²⁸اما شاید در آنجا بجای پنجاه نفر فقط چهل و پنج نفر راستکار وجود داشته باشد. آیا بخاطر اینکه پنج نفر کمتر است تو شهر را نابود می کنی؟» خداوند جواب داد: «من اگر چهل و پنج نفر راستکار در آن شهر بیابم، شهر را نابود نمی کنم.»

²⁸Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it.

²⁹ابراهیم دوباره گفت: «شاید در آنجا فقط چهل نفر باشند؟» خداوند جواب داد: «اگر چهل نفر هم پیدا کنم آنرا نابود نمی کنم.»

²⁹And he spake unto him yet again, and said, Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty's sake.

³⁰ابراهیم گفت: «ای خداوند، امیدوارم اگر باز هم چیزی بگویم قهر نشوی. اگر در آنجا فقط سی نفر راستکار باشند چه می شود؟» او جواب داد: «اگر سی نفر هم وجود داشته باشند آنجا را نابود نمی کنم.»

³⁰And he said unto him, Oh let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak: Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.

³¹ابراهیم گفت: «ای خداوند لطفاً جرأت مرا ببخش که به گفتار خود ادامه می دهم. فرض کنیم فقط بیست نفر باشند؟» او فرمود: «من اگر بیست نفر هم بیابم شهر را خراب نمی کنم.»

³¹And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the LORD: Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty's sake.

³²ابراهیم گفت: «خداوندا لطفاً قهر نشو، من فقط یکبار دیگر صحبت می کنم. اگر فقط ده نفر پیدا شود چه می کنی؟» او فرمود: «اگر من در آنجا ده نفر پیدا کنم آنجا را نابود نمی کنم.»بعد از اینکه صحبت او با ابراهیم تمام شد، خداوند به راه خود رفت و ابراهیم به خانۀ خود برگشت.

³²And he said, Oh let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake.

³³بعد از اینکه صحبت او با ابراهیم تمام شد، خداوند به راه خود رفت و ابراهیم به خانۀ خود برگشت.

³³And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.
