¹یعقوب به زندگی در کنعان که محل اقامت پدرش بود ادامه داد.

¹And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.

²و این داستان یعقوب و خانوادۀ او است: یوسف که جوان هفده ساله ای بود، به اتفاق برادران ناسکۀ خود ـ پسران بلهه و زلفه زنان پدرش ـ از گلۀ پدر خود نگهبانی می کرد. او از کارهای بدی که برادرانش می کردند به پدر خود خبر می داد.

²These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.

³یعقوب، یوسف را از تمام پسران خود زیادتر دوست می داشت. زیرا یوسف در زمان پیری او به دنیا آمده بود. او برای یوسف چپن دراز و آستین داری دوخته بود.

³Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colors.

⁴وقتی برادرانش دیدند که پدرشان یوسف را زیادتر از آن ها دوست دارد، از یوسف نفرت داشتند، به طوری که نمی توانستند با او دوستانه صحبت کنند.

⁴And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.

⁵یک شب یوسف خوابی دید. وقتی خواب خود را برای برادران خود تعریف کرد، آن ها زیادتر بدبین او شدند.

⁵And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.

⁶یوسف گفت: «گوش کنید چه خوابی دیده ام. ما همه در مزرعه مشغول بستن خوشه های گندم بودیم.

⁶And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:

⁷خوشۀ گندم من بلند شد و راست ایستاد. خوشه های گندم شما دور خوشۀ گندم من ایستادند و در مقابل آن تعظیم کردند.»

⁷For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.

⁸برادرانش گفتند: «آیا فکر می کنی که تو پادشاه و فرمانروای ما می شوی؟» پس به خاطر خوابی که یوسف دیده و برای آن ها تعریف کرده بود بدبینی آن ها از او زیادتر شد.

⁸And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.

⁹بعد از آن یوسف خواب دیگری دید و به برادران خود گفت: «من خواب دیگری دیدم. خواب دیدم که آفتاب و مهتاب و دوازده ستاره به من تعظیم می کردند.»

⁹And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.

¹⁰او این خواب را برای پدر خود هم تعریف کرد. پدرش او را سرزنش کرد و گفت: «این چه خوابی است که دیده ای؟ آیا فکر می کنی که من و مادرت و برادرانت آمده در مقابل تو تعظیم می کنیم؟»

¹⁰And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

¹¹برادران یوسف بالای او قهر شدند، اما پدرش این موضوع را به خاطر سپرد.

¹¹And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.

¹²یک روز که برادران یوسف برای چراندن گله به شکیم رفته بودند،

¹²And his brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.

¹³یعقوب به یوسف گفت: «برادرانت در شکیم مشغول چراندن گله هستند، بیا تو را در آنجا بفرستم.» یوسف گفت: «من حاضرم.»

¹³And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.

¹⁴پدرش گفت: «برو از سلامتی برادرانت و از وضع گله برای من خبر بیاور.» پس پدرش او را از دشت حبرون به شکیم فرستاد. وقتی یوسف به شکیم رسید، در آنجا دنبال برادران خود می گشت.

¹⁴And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

¹⁵مردی او را دید و پرسید: «اینجا چه می کنی؟»

¹⁵And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?

¹⁶یوسف گفت: «می خواهم برادرانم را پیدا کنم. آن ها برای چراندن گله رفته اند. آیا می دانی آن ها کجا هستند؟»

¹⁶And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks.

¹⁷آن مرد گفت: «از اینجا رفته اند. من از آن ها شنیدم که به دوتان می روند.» پس یوسف دنبال برادران خود رفت و آن ها را در دوتان پیدا کرد.

¹⁷And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.

¹⁸برادرانش او را از دور دیدند و قبل از اینکه به آن ها برسد، نقشه کشیدند تا او را بکشند.

¹⁸And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.

¹⁹آن ها به یکدیگر گفتند: «کسی که برای ما خواب دیده است، می آید.

¹⁹And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.

²⁰بیائید همین حالا او را بکشیم و در یکی از این چاه های خشک بیندازیم و بگوئیم حیوان درنده ای او را کشته است. آن وقت ببینیم تعبیر خوابهای او چه خواهد بود.»

²⁰Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

²¹رئوبین وقتی این را شنید کوشش کرد تا او را نجات دهد. پس گفت: «او را نکشیم،

²¹And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.

²²بهتر است او را در یکی از این چاه ها بیندازیم و به او صدمه نرسانیم.» او این را به خاطری گفت تا او را نجات داده به پیش پدر خود برگرداند.

²²And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.

²³وقتی یوسف پیش برادران خود آمد،

²³And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stripped Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colors that was on him;

²⁴آن ها او را گرفته و آن چپن آستین دراز را از جانش کشیدند. سپس او را در چاه خشک و بی آبی انداختند.

²⁴And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.

²⁵وقتی آن ها مشغول غذا خوردن بودند، متوجه شدند که کاروان اسماعیلیان که از جلعاد به مصر می رود از آنجا می گذرد و بار شتران آن ها هم مرهم و مصالح دیگ و ادویه بود.

²⁵And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmaelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.

²⁶یهودا به برادران خود گفت: «از اینکه برادر خود را بکشیم و موضوع قتل او را پنهان کنیم چه فایده ای به ما می رسد؟

²⁶And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?

²⁷بیائید او را به این اسماعیلیان بدون اینکه به او صدمه ای برسانیم، بفروشیم. از اینها گذشته او برادر و رگ و خون ما است.» برادرانش به پیشنهاد او موافقت کردند.

²⁷Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.

²⁸وقتی تاجر های مدیانی از آنجا می گذشتند آن ها یوسف را از چاه بیرون کشیدند و به قیمت بیست سکۀ نقره به اسماعیلیان فروختند. آن ها او را به مصر بردند.

²⁸Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.

²⁹وقتی رئوبین به سر چاه آمد، دید که یوسف در آنجا نیست. از غصه لباس خود را پاره کرد.

²⁹And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.

³⁰و به پیش برادران خود برگشت و گفت: «یوسف در آنجا نیست. حالا من چه کنم؟»

³⁰And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go?

³¹آن ها بزی را کشتند و چپن یوسف را با خون آن آغشته کردند.

³¹And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;

³²سپس آن چپن خون آلود را به پیش پدر خود بردند و گفتند: «ما این را پیدا کرده ایم ببین آیا چپن پسر تو است؟»

³²And they sent the coat of many colors, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son's coat or no.

³³یعقوب آن چپن را شناخت و گفت: «بلی این چپن او است. حتماً حیوان درنده ای او را کشته است. پسرم یوسف پاره پاره شده است.»

³³And he knew it, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.

³⁴یعقوب از غصه لباس خود را پاره کرد و لباس ماتم پوشید و مدت درازی برای پسر خود ماتم گرفت.

³⁴And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.

³⁵تمام پسرها و دختر های او آمدند تا او را تسلی بدهند. اما او آن ها را رد کرد و گفت: «من با این غم به گور می روم.» پس او به گریه و زاری برای پسر خود ادامه داد.اما تاجران مدیانی یوسف را به مصر بردند و او را به فوتیفار که قوماندان گارد فرعون بود فروختند.

³⁵And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.

³⁶اما تاجران مدیانی یوسف را به مصر بردند و او را به فوتیفار که قوماندان گارد فرعون بود فروختند.

³⁶And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, and captain of the guard.
