1ای برادران، ایمان شما به عیسی مسیح، خداوند جلال با ظاهر بینی و تبعیض همراه نباشد.
1My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.
2اگر شخصی با انگشتر طلا و لباس فاخر به عبادتگاه شما بیاید و فقیری با لباس پاره نیز وارد شود
2For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;
3و شما به کسی که لباس فاخر دارد احترام بگذارید و به او بگوئید: «بفرمائید بالا بنشینید» و به آن شخص فقیر بگوئید: «در آنجا بایست یا در اینجا روی زمین پیش پای من بنشین.»
3And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:
4آیا با این عمل در بین خود تبعیض قایل نمی شوید و آیا قضاوت شما از روی فکرهای پلید نیست؟
4Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
5ای برادران عزیز گوش دهید، مگر خدا فقیران این دنیا را بر نگزیده است تا در ایمان دولتمند و وارث آن پادشاهی ای باشند، که او به دوستداران خود وعده داده است؟
5Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
6اما شما به فقرا بی احترامی می کنید. آیا دولتمندان به شما ظلم نمی کنند و شما را به پای میز محاکمه نمی کشند؟
6But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?
7و آیا آن ها به نام نیکویی که خدا بر شما نهاده است، بی حرمتی نمی کنند؟
7Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?
8اگر شما حکم شاهانه ای را که در کلام خداست و می فرماید: «همسایه ات را همچون خویشتن دوست بدار.» بجا آورید، کاری نیکو کرده اید.
8If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
9اما اگر بین اشخاص از روی ظاهر آن ها تبعیض قایل شوید، مرتکب گناه شده اید و شریعت، شما را به عنوان خطا کار محکوم می نماید.
9But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
10چون اگر کسی تمام شریعت را رعایت کند و فقط یکی از احکام آن را بشکند باز هم در مقابل تمام شریعت مقصر است.
10For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
11زیرا همان کسی که گفت: «زنا نکن» همچنین گفته است: «قتل نکن» پس اگر تو از زنا پاک باشی ولی مرتکب قتل شوی باز هم شریعت را شکسته ای.
11For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
12مانند کسانی سخن گوئید و عمل نمائید که خداوند بر اساس این شریعت آزادی بخش، دربارۀ آن ها قضاوت می کند.
12So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
13چون خدا بر کسی که رحم نکرده، رحیم نخواهد بود، ولی همیشه رحمت بر داوری کامیاب خواهد شد.
13For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
14ای برادران، چه فایده دارد اگر کسی بگوید: «من ایمان دارم.» ولی عمل او این را ثابت نکند؟ آیا ایمانش می تواند او را نجات بخشد؟
14What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
15پس اگر برادری یا خواهری که برهنه و محتاج غذای روزانه خود باشد پیش شما بیاید
15If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
16و یکی از شما به ایشان بگوید: «بسلامت بروید و گرم و سیر شوید.» چه چیزی فایده آن ها می شود؟ هیچ، مگر آنکه احتیاجات مادی آن ها را برآورید.
16And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
17همین طور ایمانی که با عمل همراه نباشد، مُرده است.
17Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
18ممکن است کسی بگوید: «تو ایمان داری و من اعمال نیکو، تو به من ثابت کن چگونه می توانی بدون اعمال نیک ایمان داشته باشی و من ایمان خود را به وسیلۀ اعمال خویش به تو ثابت می کنم.»
18Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
19تو ایمان داری که خدا واحد است، بسیار خوب! ـ شیاطین هم ایمان دارند و از ترس می لرزند.
19Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
20ای مرد نادان، آیا نمی دانی که ایمان بدون اعمال نیک بی ثمر است؟
20But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
21پدر ما ابراهیم به خاطر اعمال خود در وقتی که پسر خویش اسحاق را در قربانگاه تقدیم خدا کرد، نیک و عادل شمرده شد.
21Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
22می بینی که چگونه ایمان او محرک اعمال او بود و اعمال او نیز ایمانش را کامل گردانید.
22Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
23کلام خدا که می فرماید: «ابراهیم به خدا ایمان آورد و این برایش عدالت شمرده شد.» تحقق یافت و او دوست خدا خوانده شد.
23And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
24پس می بینید که چگونه انسان نه فقط از راه ایمان بلکه به وسیلۀ اعمال خود عادل شمرده می شود.
24Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
25همین طور راحابِ فاحشه نیز با اعمال نیک خود یعنی پناه دادن به قاصدان اسرائیلی و روانه کردن آن ها از راه دیگر، عادل شمرده شد.ایمان بی عمل مانند بدن بی روح، مرده است.
25Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
26ایمان بی عمل مانند بدن بی روح، مرده است.
26For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
