¹بعد از آنکه نبوکدنصر یهویاکین پادشاه و مادرش را همراه با اهل دربار، بزرگان یهود، صنعتگران و آهنگران به بابل اسیر برد، ارمیای نبی نامه ای از اورشلیم برای سرکردگان یهود، کاهنان، انبیا و مردمی که به بابل تبعید شده بودند، نوشت.

¹Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders which were carried away captives, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon;

²او نامه را ذریعۀ اَلعاسه (پسر شافان) و جَمَریا (پسر حِلقیا) که نمایندگان صدقیا، پادشاه یهودا، بودند و قرار بود پیش نبوکدنصر بروند، به بابل فرستاد. مضمون نامه این بود:

²(After that Jeconiah the king, and the queen, and the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the carpenters, and the smiths, were departed from Jerusalem;)

³«خداوند قادر مطلق، خدای اسرائیل به همه کسانی که به ارادۀ او از اورشلیم به بابل تبعید شده اند، چنین می فرماید:

³By the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon) saying,

⁴«برای تان خانه بسازید و در آن سکونت کنید؛ باغها ساخته، درختان غرس نموده و از میوۀ آن ها بخورید.

⁴Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem unto Babylon;

⁵ازدواج کنید و صاحب فرزندان شوید. بگذارید فرزندان تان هم به نوبۀ خود ازدواج کنند و دارای پسر و دختر گردند تا تعداد تان افزایش یابد و کم نشود.

⁵Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them;

⁶و سلامتی شهری را که شما را در آن تبعید کرده ام، بخواهید و برای رفاه آن بحضور من دعا کنید، زیرا رفاه آنجا باعث آسودگی شما می گردد.

⁶Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; that ye may be increased there, and not diminished.

⁷من، خداوند قادر مطلق، خدای اسرائیل به شما می گویم که نگذارید انبیای کاذب و فالبینانی که در میان شما زندگی می کنند، شما را بفریبند. به خوابها و رؤیاهای شان گوش ندهید.

⁷And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.

⁸زیرا خداوند می گوید که آن ها برای شما به دروغ پیشگوئی می کنند و من آن ها را نفرستاده ام.»

⁸For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed.

⁹خداوند می فرماید: «اما وقتی که هفتاد سال دوران اسارت شما در بابل پایان یابد، آنگاه به شما شفقت نشان داده به وعدۀ خود وفا می کنم و شما را دوباره به اینجا می آورم.»

⁹For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the LORD.

¹⁰خداوند می فرماید: «من ارادۀ خود را دربارۀ شما میدانم. نقشۀ من فقط برای سلامتی شما است نه برای بدبختی تان. من می خواهم شما آیندۀ امید بخشی داشته باشید.

¹⁰For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.

¹¹بعد وقتی مرا بخوانید و پیش من دعا کنید، من دعای تان را اجابت می کنم.

¹¹For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

¹²هرگاه از دل و جان در طلب من باشید، مرا می یابید.

¹²Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.

¹³بلی، بطور یقین مرا می یابید و من همۀ چیزهای از دست رفتۀ تان را اعاده می کنم و شما را از همۀ کشورهائی که به ارادۀ من به آنجا تبعید شده اید جمع می کنم و دوباره به وطن خود تان می آورم.»

¹³And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

¹⁴شما می گوئید که خداوند انبیا را در بابل برای ما فرستاده است.

¹⁴And I will be found of you, saith the LORD: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the LORD; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.

¹⁵پس خداوند به پادشاهی که بر تخت سلطنت داود نشسته است و به همه کسانی که در اورشلیم باقی مانده اند، یعنی بر خویشاوندان شما که به بابل تبعید نشده اند، چنین می گوید:

¹⁵Because ye have said, The LORD hath raised us up prophets in Babylon;

¹⁶بلی خداوند قادر مطلق چنین می فرماید: «بلای جنگ و قحطی و وُبا را می آورم و آن ها را مانند انجیر گنده ای می سازم که قابل خوردن نیست.

¹⁶Know that thus saith the LORD of the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, and of all the people that dwelleth in this city, and of your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity;

¹⁷آن ها را با شمشیر و قحطی و وُبا تعقیب می کنم تا همۀ اقوام از دیدن شان به وحشت بیفتند و آن ها را به هر جائی که پراگنده کنم مورد نفرین و تمسخر قرار گرفته شرمنده و رسوا شوند،

¹⁷Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.

¹⁸زیرا خداوند می گوید: به کلام من گوش ندادند. با اینکه من همیشه پیام هائی بوسیلۀ بندگان خود، انبیاء برای شان فرستادم. اما خداوند می گوید که شما نیز نشنیدید.»

¹⁸And I will persecute them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be removed to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a curse, and an astonishment, and an hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations whither I have driven them:

¹⁹حالا شما که در بابل در حال تبعید بسر می برید، به سخنان خداوند گوش بدهید!

¹⁹Because they have not hearkened to my words, saith the LORD, which I sent unto them by my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but ye would not hear, saith the LORD.

²⁰خداوند قادر مطلق، خدای اسرائیل در مورد اخاب (پسر قولایا) و صدقیا (پسر مَعَسیا) که بنام او به دروغ پیشگوئی می کردند، چنین می فرماید: «من آن ها را به دست نبوکدنصر، پادشاه بابل تسلیم می کنم و او آن دو نفر را در برابر چشمان خود شما بقتل می رساند.»

²⁰Hear ye therefore the word of the LORD, all ye of the captivity, whom I have sent from Jerusalem to Babylon:

²¹سرنوشت آن ها برای آن عده کسانی که در بابل تبعید شده اند، نمونه خواهد بود، بطوری که هر که بخواهد کسی را نفرین کند، خواهد گفت: «خداوند ترا به سرنوشت صدقیا و اخاب که پادشاه بابل آن ها را در آتش زنده سوزانید، گرفتار سازد.

²¹Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, of Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and of Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, which prophesy a lie unto you in my name; Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall slay them before your eyes;

²²بخاطری که آن ها در بین قوم اسرائیل مرتکب گناه شرم آوری شدند و با زنان همسایۀ خود زنا کردند و همچنین به اسم من و مخالف ارادۀ من سخنان دروغ به مردم گفتند. من، خداوند شاهد و از همه چیز آگاه هستم.» خداوند چنین گفته است.»

²²And of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captivity of Judah which are in Babylon, saying, The LORD make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;

²³خداوند قادر مطلق، خدای اسرائیل، دربارۀ شِمَعیه نَحَلامی پیامی به من داد. او بنام خود نامه ای به تمام اهالی اورشلیم، سِفَنیای کاهن (پسر مَعَسیا) و سایر کاهنان فرستاد. در آن نامه به سِفَنیا این چنین نوشته بود:

²³Because they have committed villany in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbours' wives, and have spoken lying words in my name, which I have not commanded them; even I know, and am a witness, saith the LORD.

²⁴«خداوند ترا بعوض یَهویاداع بحیث کاهن تعیین کرده است تا در عبادتگاه اجرای وظیفه نموده و هر دیوانه ای را که ادعای نبوت کند، در پاهایش زنجیر و زولانه بیندازی.

²⁴Thus shalt thou also speak to Shemaiah the Nehelamite, saying,

²⁵پس چرا تو ارمیای عَناتوتی را که دعوای نبوت می نماید توبیخ و سرزنش نمی کنی؟

²⁵Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Because thou hast sent letters in thy name unto all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying,

²⁶زیرا در حقیقت او بود که نامه ای برای ما در بابل فرستاد و گفت که چون یک مدت طولانی در اینجا می مانیم، باید برای سکونت خود خانه ها بسازیم و باغها ساخته و نهالها غرس کنیم و از محصول آن ها بخوریم.»

²⁶The LORD hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that ye should be officers in the house of the LORD, for every man that is mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in prison, and in the stocks.

²⁷سِفَنیای کاهن نامه را در حضور ارمیای نبی خواند.

²⁷Now therefore why hast thou not reproved Jeremiah of Anathoth, which maketh himself a prophet to you?

²⁸آنگاه خداوند به ارمیا فرمود:

²⁸For therefore he sent unto us in Babylon, saying, This captivity is long: build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them.

²⁹«نامه را برای تمام تبعید شدگان بفرست و به آن ها بگو که خداوند در مورد شِمَعیه نَحَلامی چنین می فرماید: او از طرف خود برای شما پیشگوئی کرده است؛ من او را نفرستاده ام. او خواست که دروغ هایش را باور کنید.بنابران، خداوند چنین می فرماید: من شِمَعیه نَحَلامی را با اولاده اش مجازات می کنم و از خانوادۀ او هیچ کسی زنده نمی ماند که خوبی و احسانی را که در حق قوم برگزیدۀ خود می کنم، ببیند، زیرا او ضد من سخنان فتنه انگیز گفته است.» خداوند چنین فرموده است.

²⁹And Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet.

³⁰بنابران، خداوند چنین می فرماید: من شِمَعیه نَحَلامی را با اولاده اش مجازات می کنم و از خانوادۀ او هیچ کسی زنده نمی ماند که خوبی و احسانی را که در حق قوم برگزیدۀ خود می کنم، ببیند، زیرا او ضد من سخنان فتنه انگیز گفته است.» خداوند چنین فرموده است.

³⁰Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying,

³¹Send to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus saith the LORD concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite; Because that Shemaiah hath prophesied unto you, and I sent him not, and he caused you to trust in a lie:

³²Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed: he shall not have a man to dwell among this people; neither shall he behold the good that I will do for my people, saith the LORD; because he hath taught rebellion against the LORD.
