¹A [good] name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of one's birth.

¹ Y mae enw da yn well nag ennaint gwerthfawr, a dydd marw yn well na dydd geni.

²It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting: in that that is the end of all men, and the living taketh it to heart.

² Y mae'n well mynd i du375? galar na mynd i du375? gwledd; oherwydd marw yw tynged pawb, a dylai'r byw ystyried hyn.

³Vexation is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.

³ Y mae tristwch yn well na chwerthin; er i'r wyneb fod yn drist, gall y galon fod yn llawen.

⁴The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools in the house of mirth.

⁴ Y mae calon y doethion yn nhu375? galar, ond calon y ffyliaid yn nhu375? pleser.

⁵It is better for a man to hear the rebuke of the wise, than to hear the song of fools.

⁵ Y mae'n well gwrando ar gerydd y doeth na gwrando ar g�n ffyliaid.

⁶For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool. This also is vanity.

⁶ Oherwydd y mae chwerthin y ffu373?l fel clindarddach drain o dan grochan. Y mae hyn hefyd yn wagedd.

⁷Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad, and a gift destroyeth the heart.

⁷ Yn wir, y mae gormes yn gwneud y doeth yn ynfyd, ac y mae cil-dwrn yn llygru'r meddwl.

⁸Better is the end of a thing than its beginning; better is a patient spirit than a proud spirit.

⁸ Y mae diwedd peth yn well na'i ddechrau, ac amynedd yn well nag ymffrost.

⁹Be not hasty in thy spirit to be vexed; for vexation resteth in the bosom of fools.

⁹ Paid � rhuthro i ddangos dig, oherwydd ym mynwes ffyliaid y mae dig yn aros.

¹⁰Say not, How is it that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not inquire wisely concerning this.

¹⁰ Paid � dweud, "Pam y mae'r dyddiau a fu yn well na'r rhai hyn?" Oherwydd ni ddangosir doethineb wrth ofyn hyn.

¹¹Wisdom is as good as an inheritance, and profitable to them that see the sun.

¹¹ Y mae cael doethineb cystal ag etifeddiaeth, ac yn fantais i'r rhai sy'n gweld yr haul.

¹²For wisdom is a defence [as] money is a defence; but the excellency of knowledge is, [that] wisdom maketh them that possess it to live.

¹² Y mae doethineb yn gystal amddiffyn ag arian; mantais deall yw bod doethineb yn rhoi bywyd i'w pherchennog.

¹³Consider the work of God; for who can make straight what he hath made crooked?

¹³ Ystyria'r hyn a wnaeth Duw; pwy all unioni'r hyn a wyrodd ef?

¹⁴In the day of prosperity enjoy good, and in the day of adversity consider: God hath also set the one beside the other, to the end that man should find out nothing [of what shall be] after him.

¹⁴ Bydd lawen pan yw'n dda arnat, ond yn amser adfyd ystyria hyn: Duw a wnaeth y naill beth a'r llall, fel na all neb ganfod beth a fydd yn dilyn.

¹⁵All [this] have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a righteous [man] that perisheth by his righteousness, and there is a wicked [man] that prolongeth [his days] by his wickedness.

¹⁵ Yn ystod fy oes o wagedd gwelais y cyfan: un cyfiawn yn darfod yn ei gyfiawnder, ac un drygionus yn cael oes faith yn ei ddrygioni.

¹⁶Be not righteous overmuch; neither make thyself overwise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?

¹⁶ Paid � bod yn rhy gyfiawn, a phaid � bod yn or-ddoeth; pam y difethi dy hun?

¹⁷Be not overmuch wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?

¹⁷ Paid � bod yn rhy ddrwg, a phaid � bod yn ffu373?l; pam y byddi farw cyn dy amser?

¹⁸It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from that withdraw not thy hand: for he that feareth God cometh forth from them all.

¹⁸ Y mae'n werth iti ddal dy afael ar y naill beth, a pheidio � gollwng y llall o'th law. Yn wir, y mae'r un sy'n ofni Duw yn eu dilyn ill dau.

¹⁹Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty [men] that are in a city.

¹⁹ Y mae doethineb yn rhoi mwy o gryfder i'r doeth nag sydd gan ddeg llywodraethwr mewn dinas.

²⁰Surely there is not a righteous man upon earth, that doeth good and sinneth not.

²⁰ Yn wir, nid oes neb cyfiawn ar y ddaear sydd bob amser yn gwneud daioni, heb bechu.

²¹Also give not heed unto all words that are spoken, lest thou hear thy servant curse thee.

²¹ Paid � chymryd sylw o bob gair a ddywedir, rhag ofn iti glywed dy was yn dy felltithio;

²²For also thine own heart knoweth that oftentimes thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

²² yn wir fe wyddost dy fod ti dy hun wedi melltithio eraill lawer gwaith.

²³All this have I tried by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.

²³ Yr wyf wedi rhoi prawf ar hyn i gyd trwy ddoethineb. Dywedais, "Yr wyf am fod yn ddoeth," ond yr oedd yn bell oddi wrthyf.

²⁴Whatever hath been, is far off, and exceeding deep: who will find it out?

²⁴ Y mae'r hyn sy'n digwydd yn bell ac yn ddwfn iawn; pwy a all ei ganfod?

²⁵I turned, I and my heart, to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom and reason, and to know wickedness to be folly, and foolishness to be madness;

²⁵ Fe euthum ati i ddeall �'m meddwl, i chwilio a cheisio doethineb a rheswm, a deall drygioni ffolineb, a ffolineb ynfydrwydd.

²⁶and I found more bitter than death the woman whose heart is nets and snares, [and] whose hands are bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be caught by her.

²⁶ A chanf�m rywbeth chwerwach na marwolaeth: gwraig sydd �'i chalon yn faglau a rhwydau, a'i dwylo'n rhwymau. Y mae'r un sy'n dda yng ngolwg Duw yn dianc oddi wrthi, ond fe ddelir y pechadur ganddi.

²⁷See this which I have found, saith the Preacher, [searching] one by one to find out the reason;

²⁷ "Edrych, dyma'r peth a ganf�m," medd y Pregethwr, "trwy osod y naill beth wrth y llall i chwilio am ystyr,

²⁸which my soul yet seeketh, and I have not found: one man among a thousand have I found, but a woman among all those have I not found.

²⁸ oherwydd yr oeddwn yn chwilio amdano'n ddyfal ond yn methu ei gael; canf�m un dyn ymhlith mil, ond ni chefais yr un wraig ymhlith y cyfan ohonynt.

²⁹Only see this which I have found: that God made man upright, but they have sought out many devices.

²⁹ Edrych, hyn yn unig a ganf�m: bod Duw wedi creu pobl yn uniawn; ond y maent hwy wedi ceisio llawer o gynlluniau."
