¹Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his nobles, and drank wine before the thousand.

²Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels that Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines, might drink in them.

²Veini mõjul käskis Belsassar tuua kuld- ja hõberiistad, mis tema isa Nebukadnetsar Jeruusalemma templist oli toonud, et kuningas ja tema suurnikud, tema naised ja liignaised, saaksid neist juua.

³Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines, drank in them.

³Siis toodi need kuldriistad, mis olid toodud templist, Jumala kojast Jeruusalemmast, ja kuningas ning tema suurnikud, tema naised ja liignaised jõid nende seest.

⁴They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

⁴Nad jõid veini ja ülistasid kuld-, hõbe-, vask-, raud-, puu- ja kivijumalaid.

⁵In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaster of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

⁵Selsamal tunnil ilmusid inimkäe sõrmed ja kirjutasid kuninga palee lubjatud seinale, lambijala kohale; ja kuningas nägi kirjutavat kätt.

⁶Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, and the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.

⁶Siis kahvatas kuninga näojume ja ta mõtted kohutasid teda; ta niudeliigesed lõdisesid ja ta põlved pekslesid teineteise vastu.

⁷The king cried aloud to bring in the magicians, the Chaldeans, and the astrologers. The king spoke and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

⁷Kuningas hüüdis valjusti, et toodaks nõiad, Kaldea teadjad ja tähetargad. Kuningas hakkas rääkima ja ütles Paabeli tarkadele: 'Kes iganes oskab seda kirja lugeda ja seletab mulle selle tähenduse, see riietatakse purpurisse, temale pannakse kuldkee kaela ja ta saab kolmandaks valitsejaks kuningriigis!'

⁸Then came in all the king's wise men, but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation.

⁸Siis tulid kõik targad, aga need ei osanud kirja lugeda ega selle seletust kuningale teatavaks teha.

⁹Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his nobles were confounded.

⁹Siis kohkus kuningas Belsassar väga ja ta näojume kahvatas, ja ta suurnikud sattusid segadusse.

¹⁰-- The queen, by reason of the words of the king and his nobles, came into the banquet-house. The queen spoke and said, O king, live for ever! let not thy thoughts trouble thee, neither let thy countenance be changed.

¹⁰Kuninga ja tema suurnike sõnade peale tuli kuninga ema pidusaali. Kuninga ema hakkas rääkima ja ütles: 'Kuningas elagu igavesti! Ärgu kohutagu sind su mõtted ja ärgu kahvatagu su näojume!

¹¹There is a man in thy kingdom in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father, light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods was found in him; and the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, [even] the king thy father, made him master of the scribes, magicians, Chaldeans, [and] astrologers;

¹¹Sinu kuningriigis on mees, kelles on pühade jumalate vaim. Su isa päevil leidus temal arusaamist, taipu ja tarkust otsekui jumalate tarkust, ja kuningas Nebukadnetsar, su isa, tõstis tema ennustajate, nõidade, Kaldea teadjate ja tähetarkade ülemaks - kuningas, su isa -,

¹²forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and solving of problems, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.

¹³Then was Daniel brought in before the king. The king spoke and said unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Judah?

¹³Siis toodi Taaniel kuninga ette. Kuningas hakkas rääkima ja ütles Taanielile: 'Kas sina oled Taaniel, Juuda vangide hulgast, keda kuningas, mu isa, Juudast tõi?

¹⁴And I have heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and [that] light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee.

¹⁴Ma olen sinust kuulnud, et sinus on jumalate vaim ja et sinul leidub arusaamist ja taipu ning erilist tarkust.

¹⁵And now the wise men, the magicians, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof; but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing.

¹⁵Ja nüüd on mu ette toodud targad ja nõiad seda kirja lugema ning selle tähendust mulle teatavaks tegema, aga nad ei ole suutnud sellele asjale seletust anda.

¹⁶But I have heard of thee, that thou canst give interpretations, and solve problems. Now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.

¹⁶Sinust ma olen aga kuulnud, et sina suudad seletusi anda ja sõlmi harutada. Kui sa suudad nüüd kirja lugeda ja selle tähenduse mulle teatavaks teha, siis riietatakse sind purpurisse, sulle pannakse kuldkee kaela ja sa saad kolmandaks valitsejaks kuningriigis.'

¹⁷Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet will I read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation.

¹⁷Siis kostis Taaniel ja ütles kuninga ees: 'Su annid jäägu sulle enesele ja oma kingitused anna mõnele teisele! Aga kirja ma loen kuningale ja teen selle tähenduse temale teatavaks.

¹⁸O thou king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father the kingdom, and greatness, and glory, and majesty;

¹⁸Sina, kuningas! Kõigekõrgem Jumal oli andnud su isale Nebukadnetsarile kuningriigi ja võimu, au ja hiilguse.

¹⁹and for the greatness that he gave him, all peoples, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew, and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he exalted, and whom he would he humbled.

¹⁹Võimu pärast, mille Jumal temale oli andnud, värisesid ja kartsid tema ees kõik rahvad, suguvõsad ja keeled. Tema tappis, keda tahtis, ja jättis ellu, keda tahtis; ta ülendas, keda tahtis, ja alandas, keda tahtis.

²⁰But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit hardened unto presumption, he was deposed from the throne of his kingdom, and they took his glory from him;

²⁰Aga kui ta süda suurustas ja ta vaim muutus ülemeelikuks, siis tõugati ta oma kuninglikult aujärjelt ja ta au võeti temalt ära.

²¹and he was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses; they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was bathed with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the Most High God ruleth over the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.

²¹Ta aeti ära inimlaste hulgast ja ta süda muutus looma südame sarnaseks; tema eluase oli metseeslite juures ja talle anti süüa rohtu nagu härgadele ja ta ihu kasteti taeva kastega, kuni ta mõistis, et Kõigekõrgem Jumal valitseb inimeste kuningriiki ja tõstab selle üle, keda tema tahab.

²²And thou, Belshazzar, his son, hast not humbled thy heart, although thou knewest all this;

²²Aga sina, tema poeg Belsassar, ei ole alandanud oma südant, kuigi sa teadsid kõike seda,

²³but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of the heavens; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou and thy nobles, thy wives and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:

²³vaid oled tõusnud taeva Issanda vastu: tema koja riistad on toodud su ette, sina ja su suurnikud, su naised ja su liignaised olete joonud nende seest veini; sa oled ülistanud hõbe-, kuld-, vask-, raud-, puu- ja kivijumalaid, kes ei näe, ei kuule ega mõista. Aga seda Jumalat, kelle käes on su hing ja kelle omad on kõik su teed, ei ole sa austanud.

²⁴then from before him was sent the part of the hand, and this writing hath been written.

²⁴Sellepärast on tema poolt läkitatud see käsi ja kirjutatud see kiri.

²⁵And this is the writing that is written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

²⁵Ja see on see kirjutatud kiri: 'Menee, menee, tekeel, ufarsiin.'

²⁶This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE, God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it;

²⁶Sõnade tähendus on niisugune: menee - Jumal on ära lugenud su kuningriigi päevad ja on teinud sellele lõpu.

²⁷TEKEL, Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting;

²⁷Tekeel - sind on vaekaussidega vaetud ja leitud kerge olevat.

²⁸PERES, Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

²⁸Ufarsiin - su kuningriik on tükeldatud ning antud meedlastele ja pärslastele.'

²⁹Then Belshazzar commanded, and they clothed Daniel with purple, and [put] a chain of gold about his neck, and made proclamation concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

²⁹Siis Belsassar andis käsu ja Taaniel riietati purpurisse, talle pandi kuldkee kaela ja temast kuulutati, et ta hakkab kuningriigis valitsema kolmandana.

³⁰In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.

³⁰Selsamal ööl tapeti Belsassar, Kaldea kuningas.

³¹And Darius the Mede received the kingdom, [being] about sixty-two years old.
