1Rebuke not an elder sharply, but exhort [him] as a father, younger [men] as brethren,
1אל תגער בזקן כי אם תזהירנו כאב לך ואת הצעירים כאחים׃
2elder women as mothers, younger women as sisters, with all purity.
2את הזקנות כאמות ואת הצעירות כאחיות ובכל טהרה׃
3Honour widows who are really widows;
3כבד את האלמנות אשר באמת אלמנות הנה׃
4but if any widow have children or descendants, let them learn first to be pious as regards their own house, and to render a return on their side to [their] parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God.
4וכי יהיו לאלמנה בנים או בני בנים הם ילמדו לראשונה לעשות חסד עם ביתם ולשלם גמול לאבותם כי זה הוא טוב ורצוי לפני האלהים׃
5Now she who [is] a widow indeed, and is left alone, has put [her] hope in God, and continues in supplications and prayers night and day.
5אבל האלמנה באמת אשר נשארה יחידה שמה אלהים מבטחה ומתמדת בתפלות ובתחנות לילה ויומם׃
6But she that lives in habits of self-indulgence is dead [while] living.
6אך המענגה מתה היא בחייה׃
7And these things enjoin, that they may be irreproachable.
7וזאת תצוה למען תהיינה בלא דפי׃
8But if any one does not provide for his own, and specially for those of [his] house, he has denied the faith, and is worse than the unbeliever.
8אבל מי שלא יפרנס את קרוביו וביותר את בני ביתו כפר באמונה והוא גרוע מאשר איננו מאמין׃
9Let a widow be put upon the list, being of not less than sixty years, [having been] wife of one man,
9אלמנה אל תבחר זולתי בת ששים שנה ואשר היתה אשת איש אחד׃
10borne witness to in good works, if she have brought up children, if she have exercised hospitality, if she have washed saints' feet, if she have imparted relief to the distressed, if she have diligently followed every good work.
10ויש לה עדות על מעשיה הטובים שגדלה בנים והכניסה ארחים ירחצה את רגלי הקדשים ותמכה את העשוקים ורדפה כל מעשה טוב׃
11But younger widows decline; for when they grow wanton against Christ, they desire to marry,
11אבל האלמנות הצעירות אל תקבל כי בהטות יצרן את לבן מן המשיח חשקות הן להיות לאיש׃
12being guilty, because they have cast off their first faith.
12ודינן עליהן כי בגדו באמונתן הראשונה׃
13And, at the same time, they learn also [to be] idle, going about to people's houses; and not only idle, but also gossipers and meddlers, speaking things not becoming.
13ועוד בהיותן עצלות למדו לשוטט מבית לבית ולא לבד עצלות כי אף מפטפטות ורדפות אחר חדשות ומדברות את אשר לא יתכן׃
14I will therefore that the younger marry, bear children, rule the house, give no occasion to the adversary in respect of reproach.
14על כן רצוני כי הצעירות תהיינה לאיש ללדת בנים ולהנהיג את בתיהן ולא לתת לאיב תאנה לחרף׃
15For already some have turned aside after Satan.
15כי יש מהן אשר כבר סרו אחרי השטן׃
16If any believing man or woman have widows, let them impart relief to them, and let not the assembly be charged, that it may impart relief to those [that are] widows indeed.
16בן אמונה או בת אמונה שיש להם אלמנות יעזרו אתן ולא תהיינה למשא על הקהל כדי שיוכל להספיק לאלה אשר הנה אלמנות באמת׃
17Let the elders who take the lead [among the saints] well be esteemed worthy of double honour, specially those labouring in word and teaching;
17הזקנים המיטיבים לנהל ראוים הם למשנה כבוד וביותר העמלים בדבר ובהוראה׃
18for the scripture says, Thou shalt not muzzle an ox that treadeth out corn, and, The workman [is] worthy of his hire.
18כי הכתוב אמר לא תחסם שור בדישו ועוד נאמר הפעל שוה בשכרו׃
19Against an elder receive not an accusation unless where there are two or three witnesses.
19אל תקבל שטנה על הזקן בלתי אם על פי שנים או שלשה עדים׃
20Those that sin convict before all, that the rest also may have fear.
20את החטאים תוכיח בפני כל למען ייראו גם האחרים׃
21I testify before God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, that thou keep these things without prejudice, doing nothing by favour.
21הנני מעיד בך נגד האלהים ואדנינו ישוע המשיח ונגד בחירי המלאכים אשר שמור תשמר את זאת בלי משפט נמהר ולא תעשה דבר במשא פנים׃
22Lay hands quickly on no man, nor partake in others' sins. Keep thyself pure.
22אל תהי נמהר בסמיכת ידיך על אדם ולא תשתתף לחטאת אחרים שמר את נפשך בטהרה׃
23Drink no longer only water, but use a little wine on account of thy stomach and thy frequent illnesses.
23אל תרבה לשתות עוד מים כי אם קח מעט יין בעבור בטנך ואשר פעמים רבות חלה אתה׃
24Of some men the sins are manifest beforehand, going before to judgment, and some also they follow after.
24יש בני אדם אשר חטאתיהם גלויות ומקדימות לדין ויש מהם אשר הנה הלכות אחריהם׃
25In like manner good works also are manifest beforehand, and those that are otherwise cannot be hid.
25וככה גם המעשים הטובים גלוים המה ואשר אינם כן לא יוכלו להסתר׃
