1And he heard the words of Laban's sons, saying, Jacob has taken away all that was our father's, and of what was our father's he has acquired all this glory.
1וישמע את דברי בני לבן לאמר לקח יעקב את כל אשר לאבינו ומאשר לאבינו עשה את כל הכבד הזה׃
2And Jacob saw the countenance of Laban, and behold, it was not toward him as previously.
2וירא יעקב את פני לבן והנה איננו עמו כתמול שלשום׃
3And Jehovah said to Jacob, Return into the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee.
3ויאמר יהוה אל יעקב שוב אל ארץ אבותיך ולמולדתך ואהיה עמך׃
4And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the fields to his flock,
4וישלח יעקב ויקרא לרחל וללאה השדה אל צאנו׃
5and said to them, I see your father's countenance, that it is not toward me as previously; but the God of my father has been with me.
5ויאמר להן ראה אנכי את פני אביכן כי איננו אלי כתמל שלשם ואלהי אבי היה עמדי׃
6And you know that with all my power I have served your father.
6ואתנה ידעתן כי בכל כחי עבדתי את אביכן׃
7And your father has mocked me, and has changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.
7ואביכן התל בי והחלף את משכרתי עשרת מנים ולא נתנו אלהים להרע עמדי׃
8If he said thus; The speckled shall be thy hire, then all the flocks bore speckled; and if he said thus: The ringstraked shall be thy hire, then all the flocks bore ringstraked.
8אם כה יאמר נקדים יהיה שכרך וילדו כל הצאן נקדים ואם כה יאמר עקדים יהיה שכרך וילדו כל הצאן עקדים׃
9And God has taken away the cattle of your father, and given [them] to me.
9ויצל אלהים את מקנה אביכם ויתן לי׃
10And it came to pass at the time of the ardour of the flocks, that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and behold, the rams that leaped upon the flocks were ringstraked, speckled, and spotted.
10ויהי בעת יחם הצאן ואשא עיני וארא בחלום והנה העתדים העלים על הצאן עקדים נקדים וברדים׃
11And the Angel of God said to me in a dream, Jacob! And I said, Here am I.
11ויאמר אלי מלאך האלהים בחלום יעקב ואמר הנני׃
12And he said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see: all the rams that leap upon the flock are ringstraked, speckled, and spotted; for I have seen all that Laban does to thee.
12ויאמר שא נא עיניך וראה כל העתדים העלים על הצאן עקדים נקדים וברדים כי ראיתי את כל אשר לבן עשה לך׃
13I am the ùGod of Bethel, where thou anointedst the pillar, where thou vowedst a vow to me. Now arise, depart out of this land, and return to the land of thy kindred.
13אנכי האל בית אל אשר משחת שם מצבה אשר נדרת לי שם נדר עתה קום צא מן הארץ הזאת ושוב אל ארץ מולדתך׃
14And Rachel and Leah answered and said to him, Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father's house?
14ותען רחל ולאה ותאמרנה לו העוד לנו חלק ונחלה בבית אבינו׃
15Are we not reckoned of him strangers? for he has sold us, and has even constantly devoured our money.
15הלוא נכריות נחשבנו לו כי מכרנו ויאכל גם אכול את כספנו׃
16For all the wealth that God has taken from our father is ours and our children's; and now whatever God has said to thee do.
16כי כל העשר אשר הציל אלהים מאבינו לנו הוא ולבנינו ועתה כל אשר אמר אלהים אליך עשה׃
17And Jacob rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon camels,
17ויקם יעקב וישא את בניו ואת נשיו על הגמלים׃
18and carried away all his cattle, and all his property that he had acquired -- the cattle of his possessions that he had acquired in Padan-Aram, to go to Isaac his father, into the land of Canaan.
18וינהג את כל מקנהו ואת כל רכשו אשר רכש מקנה קנינו אשר רכש בפדן ארם לבוא אל יצחק אביו ארצה כנען׃
19And Laban had gone to shear his sheep. And Rachel stole the teraphim that [belonged] to her father.
19ולבן הלך לגזז את צאנו ותגנב רחל את התרפים אשר לאביה׃
20And Jacob deceived Laban the Syrian, in that he did not tell him that he fled.
20ויגנב יעקב את לב לבן הארמי על בלי הגיד לו כי ברח הוא׃
21And he fled with all that he had; and he rose up and passed over the river, and set his face [toward] mount Gilead.
21ויברח הוא וכל אשר לו ויקם ויעבר את הנהר וישם את פניו הר הגלעד׃
22And it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob had fled.
22ויגד ללבן ביום השלישי כי ברח יעקב׃
23And he took his brethren with him, and pursued after him seven days' journey, and overtook him on mount Gilead.
23ויקח את אחיו עמו וירדף אחריו דרך שבעת ימים וידבק אתו בהר הגלעד׃
24And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said to him, Take care thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
24ויבא אלהים אל לבן הארמי בחלם הלילה ויאמר לו השמר לך פן תדבר עם יעקב מטוב עד רע׃
25And Laban came up with Jacob; and Jacob had pitched his tent on the mountain; Laban also with his brethren pitched on mount Gilead.
25וישג לבן את יעקב ויעקב תקע את אהלו בהר ולבן תקע את אחיו בהר הגלעד׃
26And Laban said to Jacob, What hast thou done, that thou hast deceived me, and hast carried away my daughters as captives of war?
26ויאמר לבן ליעקב מה עשית ותגנב את לבבי ותנהג את בנתי כשביות חרב׃
27Why didst thou flee away covertly, and steal away from me, and didst not tell me, that I might have conducted thee with mirth and with songs, with tambour and with harp;
27למה נחבאת לברח ותגנב אתי ולא הגדת לי ואשלחך בשמחה ובשרים בתף ובכנור׃
28and hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters? Now thou hast acted foolishly.
28ולא נטשתני לנשק לבני ולבנתי עתה הסכלת עשו׃
29It would be in the power of my hand to do you hurt; but the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, Take care that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
29יש לאל ידי לעשות עמכם רע ואלהי אביכם אמש אמר אלי לאמר השמר לך מדבר עם יעקב מטוב עד רע׃
30And now that thou must needs be gone, because thou greatly longedst after thy father's house, why hast thou stolen my gods?
30ועתה הלך הלכת כי נכסף נכספתה לבית אביך למה גנבת את אלהי׃
31And Jacob answered and said to Laban, I was afraid; for I said, Lest thou shouldest take by force thy daughters from me.
31ויען יעקב ויאמר ללבן כי יראתי כי אמרתי פן תגזל את בנותיך מעמי׃
32With whomsoever thou findest thy gods, he shall not live. Before our brethren discern what is thine with me, and take [it] to thee. But Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.
32עם אשר תמצא את אלהיך לא יחיה נגד אחינו הכר לך מה עמדי וקח לך ולא ידע יעקב כי רחל גנבתם׃
33And Laban went into Jacob's tent, and into Leah's tent, and into the two handmaids' tents, and found nothing; and he went out of Leah's tent, and entered into Rachel's tent.
33ויבא לבן באהל יעקב ובאהל לאה ובאהל שתי האמהת ולא מצא ויצא מאהל לאה ויבא באהל רחל׃
34Now Rachel had taken the teraphim and put them under the camel's saddle; and she sat upon them. And Laban explored all the tent, but found nothing.
34ורחל לקחה את התרפים ותשמם בכר הגמל ותשב עליהם וימשש לבן את כל האהל ולא מצא׃
35And she said to her father, Let it not be an occasion of anger in the eyes of my lord that I cannot rise up before thee, for it is with me after the manner of women. And he searched carefully, but did not find the teraphim.
35ותאמר אל אביה אל יחר בעיני אדני כי לוא אוכל לקום מפניך כי דרך נשים לי ויחפש ולא מצא את התרפים׃
36And Jacob was angry, and he disputed with Laban. And Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my fault, what my sin, that thou hast so hotly pursued after me?
36ויחר ליעקב וירב בלבן ויען יעקב ויאמר ללבן מה פשעי מה חטאתי כי דלקת אחרי׃
37Whereas thou hast explored all my baggage, what hast thou found of all thy household stuff? Set [it] here before my brethren and thy brethren, and let them decide between us both.
37כי מששת את כל כלי מה מצאת מכל כלי ביתך שים כה נגד אחי ואחיך ויוכיחו בין שנינו׃
38These twenty years have I been with thee: thy ewes and thy she-goats have not cast their young, and the rams of thy flock I have not eaten.
38זה עשרים שנה אנכי עמך רחליך ועזיך לא שכלו ואילי צאנך לא אכלתי׃
39What was torn I have not brought to thee; I had to bear the loss of it: of my hand hast thou required it, [whether] stolen by day or stolen by night.
39טרפה לא הבאתי אליך אנכי אחטנה מידי תבקשנה גנבתי יום וגנבתי לילה׃
40Thus it was with me: in the day the heat consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep fled from mine eyes.
40הייתי ביום אכלני חרב וקרח בלילה ותדד שנתי מעיני׃
41I have been these twenty years in thy house: I have served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy flock; and thou hast changed my wages ten times.
41זה לי עשרים שנה בביתך עבדתיך ארבע עשרה שנה בשתי בנתיך ושש שנים בצאנך ותחלף את משכרתי עשרת מנים׃
42Had not the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, been with me, it is certain thou wouldest have sent me away now empty. God has looked upon my affliction and the labour of my hands, and has judged last night.
42לולי אלהי אבי אלהי אברהם ופחד יצחק היה לי כי עתה ריקם שלחתני את עניי ואת יגיע כפי ראה אלהים ויוכח אמש׃
43And Laban answered and said to Jacob, The daughters are my daughters, and the sons are my sons, and the flock is my flock, and all that thou seest is mine; but as for my daughters, what can I do this day to them, or to their sons whom they have brought forth?
43ויען לבן ויאמר אל יעקב הבנות בנתי והבנים בני והצאן צאני וכל אשר אתה ראה לי הוא ולבנתי מה אעשה לאלה היום או לבניהן אשר ילדו׃
44And now, come, let us make a covenant, I and thou; and let it be a witness between me and thee.
44ועתה לכה נכרתה ברית אני ואתה והיה לעד ביני ובינך׃
45And Jacob took a stone, and set it up [for] a pillar.
45ויקח יעקב אבן וירימה מצבה׃
46And Jacob said to his brethren, Gather stones. And they took stones, and made a heap, and ate there upon the heap.
46ויאמר יעקב לאחיו לקטו אבנים ויקחו אבנים ויעשו גל ויאכלו שם על הגל׃
47And Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha, and Jacob called it Galeed.
47ויקרא לו לבן יגר שהדותא ויעקב קרא לו גלעד׃
48And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it called Galeed,
48ויאמר לבן הגל הזה עד ביני ובינך היום על כן קרא שמו גלעד׃
49-- and Mizpah; for he said, Let Jehovah watch between me and thee, when we shall be hidden one from another:
49והמצפה אשר אמר יצף יהוה ביני ובינך כי נסתר איש מרעהו׃
50if thou shouldest afflict my daughters, or if thou shouldest take wives besides my daughters, -- no man is with us; see, God is witness between me and thee!
50אם תענה את בנתי ואם תקח נשים על בנתי אין איש עמנו ראה אלהים עד ביני ובינך׃
51And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap, and behold the pillar which I have set up between me and thee:
51ויאמר לבן ליעקב הנה הגל הזה והנה המצבה אשר יריתי ביני ובינך׃
52[let] this heap be witness, and the pillar a witness, that neither I pass this heap [to go] to thee, nor thou pass this heap and this pillar [to come] to me, for harm.
52עד הגל הזה ועדה המצבה אם אני לא אעבר אליך את הגל הזה ואם אתה לא תעבר אלי את הגל הזה ואת המצבה הזאת לרעה׃
53The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us! And Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac.
53אלהי אברהם ואלהי נחור ישפטו בינינו אלהי אביהם וישבע יעקב בפחד אביו יצחק׃
54And Jacob offered a sacrifice upon the mountain, and invited his brethren to eat bread: and they ate bread, and lodged on the mountain.
54ויזבח יעקב זבח בהר ויקרא לאחיו לאכל לחם ויאכלו לחם וילינו בהר׃
55And Laban rose early in the morning, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them; and Laban went and returned to his place.
55וישכם לבן בבקר וינשק לבניו ולבנותיו ויברך אתהם וילך וישב לבן למקמו׃
