1And it came to pass on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and announcing the glad tidings, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up,
1ויהי היום והוא מלמד את העם במקדש ומבשר ויגשו הכהנים והסופרים עם הזקנים׃
2and spoke to him saying, Tell us by what authority thou doest these things, or who is it who has given thee this authority?
2ויאמרו אליו אמר נא לנו באי זו רשות אתה עשה את אלה או מי הוא הנתן לך את הרשות הזאת׃
3And he answering said to them, *I* also will ask you [one] thing, and tell me:
3ויען ויאמר אליהם אף אני אשאלכם דבר ואמרו לי׃
4The baptism of John, was it of heaven or of men?
4טבילת יוחנן המן השמים היתה אם מבני אדם׃
5And they reasoned among themselves, saying, If we should say, Of heaven, he will say, Why have ye not believed him?
5ויחשבו בלבם לאמר אם נאמר מן השמים ואמר למה זה לא האמנתם לו׃
6but if we should say, Of men, the whole people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.
6ואם נאמר מבני אדם וסקלנו כל העם בעמדם על דעתם כי יוחנן נביא היה׃
7And they answered, they did not know whence.
7ויענו לא ידענו מאין׃
8And Jesus said to them, Neither do *I* tell you by what authority I do these things.
8ויאמר ישוע אליהם גם אני לא אמר לכם באי זו רשות אני עשה אלה׃
9And he began to speak to the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard and let it out to husbandmen, and left the country for a long time.
9ויחל לדבר אל העם את המשל הזה איש אחד נטע כרם ויתן אתו אל כרמים וילך בדרך מרחוק לימים רבים׃
10And in the season he sent to the husbandmen a bondman, that they might give to him of the fruit of the vineyard; but the husbandmen, having beaten him, sent [him] away empty.
10ולמועד שלח עבד אל הכרמים לתת לו מפרי הכרם והכרמים הכהו וישלחהו ריקם׃
11And again he sent another bondman; but they, having beaten him also, and cast insult upon him, sent [him] away empty.
11ויסף שלח עבד אחר ויכו גם אתו ויחרפהו וישלחהו ריקם׃
12And again he sent a third; and they, having wounded him also, cast [him] out.
12ויסף לשלח שלישי וגם אתו פצעו ויגרשהו וידחפהו חוצה׃
13And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: perhaps when they see him they will respect [him].
13ויאמר בעל הכרם מה אעשה אשלחה את בני את ידידי כראותם אותו אולי יגורו מפניו׃
14But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; [come,] let us kill him, that the inheritance may become ours.
14וכראות אתו הכרמים נועצו יחדו לאמר זה הוא היורש לכו ונהרגהו ותהי לנו הירשה׃
15And having cast him forth out of the vineyard, they killed [him]. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do to them?
15ויגרשו אותו אל מחוץ לכרם ויהרגהו ועתה מה יעשה להם בעל הכרם׃
16He will come and destroy those husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it they said, May it never be!
16יבוא ויאבד את הכרמים האלה ויתן את הכרם לאחרים ויהי כשמעם ויאמרו חלילה מהיות כזאת׃
17But he looking at them said, What then is this that is written, The stone which they that builded rejected, this has become the corner-stone?
17ויבט בם ויאמר ומה הוא זה הכתוב אבן מאסו הבונים היתה לראש פנה׃
18Every one falling on this stone shall be broken, but on whomsoever it shall fall, it shall grind him to powder.
18כל הנפל על האבן ההיא ישבר ואת אשר תפל עליו תשחקהו׃
19And the chief priests and the scribes sought the same hour to lay hands on him, and they feared the people; for they knew that he had spoken this parable of them.
19ויבקשו הכהנים הגדולים והסופרים לשלח בו את ידם בעת ההיא וייראו מפני העם כי ידעו אשר עליהם דבר את המשל הזה׃
20And having watched [him], they sent out suborned persons, pretending to be just men, that they might take hold of him in [his] language, so that they might deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor.
20ויארבו לו וישלחו מארבים והם נדמו כצדיקים למען ילכדו אותו בדבר להסגירו אל השררה ואל יד ההגמון׃
21And they asked him saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest no [man's] person, but teachest with truth the way of God:
21וישאלהו לאמר רבי ידענו כי נכונה תדבר ותלמד ולא תשא פנים כי באמת מורה אתה את דרך אלהים׃
22Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?
22המתר לנו לתת מס אל הקיסר אם לא׃
23But perceiving their deceit he said to them, Why do ye tempt me?
23ויכר את נכליהם ויאמר להם׃
24Shew me a denarius. Whose image and superscription has it? And answering they said, Caesar's.
24מה תנסוני הראוני דינר של מי הצורה והמכתב אשר עליו ויענו ויאמרו של הקיסר׃
25And he said to them, Pay therefore what is Caesar's to Caesar, and what is God's to God.
25ויאמר אליהם לכן תנו לקיסר את אשר לקיסר ולאלהים את אשר לאלהים׃
26And they were not able to take hold of him in [his] expressions before the people, and, wondering at his answer, they were silent.
26ולא יכלו ללכדו בדבר לפני העם ויתמהו על מענהו ויחרישו׃
27And some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is any resurrection, coming up [to him],
27ויקרבו אנשים מן הצדוקים הכפרים בתחית המתים וישאלהו לאמר׃
28demanded of him saying, Teacher, Moses wrote to us, If any one's brother, who has a wife, die, and he die childless, his brother shall take the wife and raise up seed to his brother.
28מורה משה כתב לנו כי ימות אח בעל אשה ובנים אין לו ולקח אחיו את אשתו והקים זרע לאחיו׃
29There were then seven brethren: and the first, having taken a wife, died childless;
29והנה היו שבעה אחים והראשון לקח אשה וימת לא בנים׃
30and the second [took the woman, and *he* died childless];
30ויקח אתה השני וימת גם הוא לא בנים׃
31and the third took her: and in like manner also the seven left no children and died;
31ויקח אתה השלישי וככה עשו אף השבעה ולא הניחו בנים וימותו׃
32and last of all the woman also died.
32ובאחרונה מתה גם האשה׃
33In the resurrection therefore of which of them does she become wife, for the seven had her as wife?
33והנה בתחית המתים למי מהם תהיה לאשה כי היתה אשה לשבעה׃
34And Jesus said to them, The sons of this world marry and are given in marriage,
34ויען ישוע ויאמר אליהם בני העולם הזה ישאו נשים ותנשאנה׃
35but they who are counted worthy to have part in that world, and the resurrection from among [the] dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage;
35והזכים לנחל את העולם הבא ואת תחית המתים לא ישאו נשים ולא תנשאנה׃
36for neither can they die any more, for they are equal to angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
36כי לא יוכלו עוד למות כי שוים הם למלאכים ובני אלהים המה בהיותם בני התקומה׃
37But that the dead rise, even Moses shewed in [the section of] the bush, when he called [the] Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob;
37וגם משה רמז בסנה כי יקומו המתים בקראו את יהוה אלהי אברהם אלהי יצחק ואלהי יעקב׃
38but he is not God of [the] dead but of [the] living; for all live for him.
38והאלהים איננו אלהי המתים כי אם אלהי החיים כי כלם חיים לו׃
39And some of the scribes answering said, Teacher, thou hast well spoken.
39ויענו מן הסופרים רבי יפה דברת׃
40For they did not dare any more to ask him anything.
40ולא ערבו עוד את לבם לשאל אותו דבר׃
41And he said to them, How do they say that the Christ is David's son,
41ויאמר אליהם איך יאמרו על המשיח כי הוא בן דוד׃
42and David himself says in the book of Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand
42והוא דוד אמר בספר תהלים נאם יהוה לאדני שב לימיני׃
43until I put thine enemies [as] footstool of thy feet?
43עד אשית איביך הדם לרגליך׃
44David therefore calls him Lord, and how is he his son?
44הנה דוד קרא לו אדון ואיך הוא בנו׃
45And, as all the people were listening, he said to his disciples,
45ויאמר אל תלמידיו באזני כל העם׃
46Beware of the scribes, who like to walk about in long robes, and who love salutations in the market-places, and first seats in the synagogues, and first places at suppers;
46הזהרו מן הסופרים החפצים להתהלך עטופי טלית ואהבים את שאלות שלומם בשוקים ואת מושבי הראש בבתי הכנסיות ואת מסבות הראש בסעודות׃
47who devour the houses of widows, and as a pretext make long prayers. These shall receive a severer judgment.
47הבלעים את בתי האלמנות ומאריכים תפלתם למראה עינים המה משפט על יתר יקחו׃
