¹And while Ezra prayed, and made confession, weeping and falling down before the house of God, there were gathered to him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children; for the people wept very much.

¹Sementara Ezra berdoa sambil menangis dan mengaku dosa di depan Rumah TUHAN, banyak sekali orang Israel datang berkumpul, baik laki-laki, maupun wanita dan anak-anak. Mereka mengelilinginya sambil menangis keras-keras.

²And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, of the sons of Elam, answered and said to Ezra, We have acted unfaithfully toward our God, and have taken foreign wives of the peoples of the land; yet now there is hope for Israel concerning this thing.

²Kemudian Sekhanya anak Yehiel dari kaum Elam, berkata kepada Ezra, "Kami berdosa kepada TUHAN karena telah mengawini bangsa asing. Meskipun demikian masih ada harapan bagi Israel.

³And now let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of [my] lord, and of those that tremble at the commandments of our God; and let it be done according to the law.

³Marilah kita bersumpah kepada Allah, bahwa kita akan mengusir semua wanita itu bersama dengan anak-anak mereka. Kami akan menuruti segala nasihatmu serta nasihat orang-orang lain yang menghormati perintah Allah. Kami akan mentaati Hukum Allah.

⁴Arise, for this matter is incumbent on thee, and we will be with thee: be of good courage, and do [it].

⁴Engkaulah yang harus bertindak. Kami akan membantu engkau sepenuhnya. Bertindaklah dengan tegas sampai tuntas."

⁵Then Ezra arose, and made the chiefs of the priests, of the Levites, and of all Israel, to swear that they would do according to this word. And they swore.

⁵Maka mulailah Ezra bertindak. Ia menyuruh imam-imam kepala, orang-orang Lewi dan orang-orang Israel lainnya bersumpah bahwa mereka akan melaksanakan usul Sekhanya itu.

⁶And Ezra arose from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib; and when he came thither, he ate no bread and drank no water; for he mourned because of the unfaithfulness of them that had been carried away.

⁶Setelah mereka bersumpah, pergilah Ezra dari depan Rumah TUHAN dan masuk ke dalam tempat tinggal Yohanan anak Elyasib dan bermalam di situ. Ia tidak mau makan atau minum karena sedih memikirkan perbuatan orang-orang buangan itu.

⁷And they made proclamation in Judah and Jerusalem to all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem;

⁷Kemudian disiarkan sebuah maklumat ke seluruh Yerusalem dan Yehuda kepada semua orang yang telah kembali dari pembuangan, supaya berkumpul di Yerusalem.

⁸and that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be confiscated, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.

⁸Barangsiapa tidak datang dalam tiga hari, akan disita seluruh hartanya dan ia tidak lagi dianggap anggota masyarakat. Maklumat itu ditandatangani oleh para pemimpin rakyat.

⁹Then were all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered together at Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth of the month; and all the people sat in the open space of the house of God, trembling because of the matter, and because of the pouring rain.

⁹Sesudah tiga hari, pada tanggal dua puluh bulan sembilan, semua orang laki-laki yang tinggal di daerah Yehuda dan Benyamin datang ke Yerusalem dan berkumpul di halaman Rumah TUHAN. Pada waktu itu hujan turun dengan lebatnya. Semua orang menggigil karena dinginnya udara dan juga karena pentingnya pertemuan itu.

¹⁰And Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, Ye have acted unfaithfully, and have taken foreign wives, to increase the trespass of Israel.

¹⁰Kemudian Ezra berdiri dan berbicara kepada mereka. Ia berkata, "Kalian telah berdosa dan menambah kesalahan Israel karena mengawini wanita bangsa asing.

¹¹And now make confession to Jehovah the God of your fathers, and do his pleasure, and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the foreign wives.

¹¹Sebab itu, akuilah dosamu kepada TUHAN, Allah yang disembah nenek moyang kita, dan lakukanlah apa yang menyenangkan hati-Nya. Jauhilah orang asing yang tinggal di negeri kita dan usirlah istri-istrimu dari bangsa asing itu."

¹²And the whole congregation answered and said with a loud voice, Yes, it is for us to do according to thy words.

¹²Orang-orang itu menjawab dengan nyaring, "Kami akan menuruti nasihatmu."

¹³But the people are many, and it is a time of pouring rain, and it is not possible to stand without: neither is this a work for one day or two; for we are many that have transgressed in this thing.

¹³Lalu kata mereka lagi, "Tetapi yang hadir di sini banyak sekali dan hujan begitu lebat. Kami tidak tahan berdiri di luar begini. Lagipula ini bukan perkara yang dapat diselesaikan dalam satu dua hari, sebab banyak sekali dari kami yang terlibat dalam dosa ini.

¹⁴Let now our princes, while this matter is going on, stand for all the congregation, and let all those that have taken foreign wives in our cities come at the appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce anger of our God be turned from us.

¹⁴Izinkanlah para pemimpin kami tinggal di Yerusalem dan mengurus soal itu. Lalu setiap orang di kota-kota kami, yang mempunyai istri dari bangsa asing, harus datang pada waktu yang ditentukan, bersama dengan para pemimpin dan para hakim kotanya masing-masing. Dengan demikian Allah tidak akan marah lagi kepada kita karena perkara itu."

¹⁵Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah stood up against this; and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them.

¹⁵Tidak seorang pun mengajukan keberatan terhadap rencana itu, kecuali Yonatan anak Asael dan Yahzeya anak Tikwa, disokong oleh dua orang Lewi, yaitu Mesulam dan Sabetai.

¹⁶And the children of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest [and] certain of the chief fathers were separated according to their fathers' houses, and all of them [expressed] by name; and they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.

¹⁶Orang-orang buangan yang telah kembali itu tetap hendak menjalankan rencana itu, sebab itu Imam Ezra memilih beberapa orang di antara kepala-kepala kaum, lalu mencatat nama mereka. Pada tanggal satu bulan sepuluh mereka mulai bersidang untuk menyelidiki perkara itu.

¹⁷And they ended with all the men that had taken foreign wives by the first day of the first month.

¹⁷Dalam tiga bulan berikutnya berhasillah mereka menyelesaikan pemeriksaan terhadap semua pria yang telah mengawini wanita dari bangsa asing.

¹⁸And among the sons of the priests there were found that had taken foreign wives, of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren: Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah.

¹⁸Inilah daftar dari orang-orang yang mempunyai istri dari bangsa asing: Para Imam, terdaftar dengan kaumnya: Kaum Yesua dengan saudara-saudaranya, anak-anak Yozadak: Maaseya, Eliezer, Yarib dan Gedalya.

¹⁹And they gave their hand to send away their wives; and they offered a ram of the flock, as trespass-offering for their guilt.

¹⁹Mereka berjanji akan menceraikan istri mereka, lalu mereka mempersembahkan domba jantan untuk kurban pengampunan dosa mereka.

²⁰And of the children of Immer: Hanani, and Zebadiah.

²⁰Kaum Imer: Hanani dan Zebaja.

²¹And of the children of Harim: Maaseiah, and Elijah, and Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah.

²¹Kaum Harim: Maaseya, Elia, Semaya, Yehiel dan Uzia.

²²And of the children of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethaneel, Jozabad, and Elasah.

²²Kaum Pasyhur: Elyoenai, Maaseya, Ismael, Netaneel, Yozabad, dan Elasa.

²³And of the Levites: Jozabad, and Shimei, and Kelaiah (that is, Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.

²⁴And of the singers: Eliashib. And of the doorkeepers: Shallum, and Telem, and Uri.

²⁵And of Israel; of the children of Parosh: Ramiah, and Jizzijah, and Malchijah, and Mijamin, and Eleazar, and Malchijah, and Benaiah.

²⁵Orang-orang Israel yang lain: Kaum Paros: Ramya, Yezia, Malkia, Miyamin, Eleazar, Malkia dan Benaya.

²⁶And of the children of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, and Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Elijah.

²⁶Kaum Elam: Matanya, Zakharia, Yehiel, Abdi, Yeremot dan Elia.

²⁷And of the children of Zattu: Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and Aziza.

²⁷Kaum Zatu: Elyoenai, Elyasib, Matanya, Yeremot, Zabad dan Aziza.

²⁸And of the children of Bebai: Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, Athlai.

²⁹And of the children of Bani: Meshullam, Malluch, and Adaiah, Jashub, and Sheal, and Ramoth.

⁴⁴Semua orang itu telah mengawini wanita dari bangsa asing. Maka istri-istri itu diceraikan dan diusir bersama dengan anak-anak mereka.
