¹Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broadways thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be [any] that doeth justice, that seeketh fidelity; and I will pardon it.

¹Hai penduduk Yerusalem, susurilah jalan-jalan di kotamu! Carilah di mana-mana, dan saksikanlah sendiri. Periksalah di alun-alun kota apakah ada satu orang jujur yang berusaha setia kepada Allah. Kalau ada, maka TUHAN akan mengampuni Yerusalem.

²And if they say, [As] Jehovah liveth! surely they swear falsely.

²Kamu berkata bahwa kamu menyembah TUHAN, padahal kamu tidak bermaksud demikian.

³Jehovah, are not thine eyes upon fidelity? Thou hast smitten them, but they are not sore; thou hast consumed them, they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.

³Sesungguhnya yang dituntut oleh TUHAN ialah kesetiaan. TUHAN memukul kamu, tapi kamu tidak peduli. Ia meremukkan kamu, tapi kamu tidak mau diajar. Kamu keras kepala, dan tak mau bertobat dari dosa-dosamu.

⁴And I said, Surely these are the wretched ones, they are foolish; for they know not the way of Jehovah, the judgment of their God.

⁴Aku berpikir, "Ah, mereka hanyalah rakyat jelata yang tidak tahu apa-apa. Mereka bertindak bodoh, karena tidak tahu apa yang diinginkan dan dituntut TUHAN Allah dari mereka.

⁵I will go unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they know the way of Jehovah, the judgment of their God; but these have altogether broken the yoke, have burst the bonds.

⁵Baiklah aku pergi kepada para pembesar, dan berbicara dengan mereka. Pastilah mereka tahu apa yang diinginkan dan dituntut TUHAN Allah dari mereka." Tapi, mereka semua juga tidak mau diperintah oleh TUHAN; mereka tidak mau taat kepada-Nya.

⁶Therefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, a wolf of the evenings shall waste them; the leopard lurketh against their cities, every one that goeth out thence is torn in pieces: for their transgressions are multiplied, their backslidings are increased.

⁶Itu sebabnya mereka akan dibunuh oleh singa dari hutan, dan dikoyak-koyak oleh serigala dari padang gurun. Macan tutul akan berkeliaran mencari mangsa di dekat kota-kota mereka, dan setiap orang yang keluar akan diterkam. Semuanya itu terjadi karena mereka telah banyak berdosa, dan berkali-kali membelakangi Allah.

⁷Wherefore should I pardon thee? Thy children have forsaken me, and swear by them that are not God. I have satiated them, and they have committed adultery, and they troop to the harlots' house.

⁷TUHAN berkata, "Mengapa Aku harus mengampuni dosa-dosa umat-Ku? Mereka telah meninggalkan Aku dan menyembah yang bukan Allah. Aku memberi makanan kepada mereka sampai mereka kenyang, tapi mereka berbuat zinah, dan sering mengunjungi pelacur-pelacur.

⁸[As] well fed horses, they roam about, every one neigheth after his neighbour's wife.

⁸Mereka seperti kuda jantan yang gemuk dan kuat nafsu berahinya; masing-masing menginginkan istri kawannya.

⁹Shall I not visit for these things? saith Jehovah, and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

⁹Apakah tidak seharusnya Aku menghukum bangsa yang semacam itu dan membalas apa yang telah mereka lakukan?

¹⁰Go up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end; take away her battlements, for they are not Jehovah's.

¹⁰Aku akan mengutus musuh untuk merusak kebun anggur mereka, tapi bukan untuk memusnahkannya. Aku akan menyuruh musuh itu memangkas carang pohon-pohon anggur mereka, sebab carang-carang itu bukan milik-Ku.

¹¹For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith Jehovah.

¹¹Umat Israel dan Yehuda sungguh-sungguh telah mengkhianati Aku. Aku, TUHAN, telah berbicara."

¹²They have denied Jehovah, and say, He is not; and evil shall not come upon us, nor shall we see sword nor famine;

¹²Umat TUHAN mengatakan yang tidak benar mengenai TUHAN. Mereka berkata, "Ah, Ia tidak akan berbuat apa-apa. Kita tidak akan kena bencana dan tidak pula akan mengalami perang atau kelaparan.

¹³and the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.

¹³Anggaplah nabi-nabi itu angin saja, sebab pesan TUHAN tidak ada pada mereka."

¹⁴Therefore thus saith Jehovah, the God of hosts: Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.

¹⁴Lalu TUHAN Yang Mahakuasa berkata kepadaku, "Yeremia, karena orang-orang itu berbicara begitu, maka mereka akan kena malapetaka yang menurut mereka tidak akan terjadi. Aku akan menjadikan kata-kata-Ku seperti api di dalam mulutmu. Bangsa ini akan seperti kayu bakar, dan api itu akan membakar mereka sampai habis."

¹⁵Behold, I bring a nation upon you from afar, house of Israel, saith Jehovah: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest thou what they say.

¹⁵Hai umat Israel, TUHAN sedang mendatangkan suatu bangsa dari negeri yang jauh untuk menyerang kamu. Bangsa itu sudah ada sejak dulu kala, bahasanya tidak kamu kenal. Mereka kuat sekali,

¹⁶Their quiver is as an open sepulchre; they are all mighty men.

¹⁶dan pemanah-pemanah mereka gagah berani; mereka membunuh tanpa belas kasihan.

¹⁷And they shall eat up thy harvest and thy bread, they shall eat up thy sons and thy daughters, they shall eat up thy flocks and thy herds, they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig-trees; they shall destroy with the sword thy strong cities, wherein thou trustedst.

¹⁷Mereka akan menghabiskan hasil tanah dan makananmu serta membunuh anak-anakmu. Ternak sapi dan dombamu akan mereka sembelih, dan kebun-kebun anggur serta pohon-pohon aramu akan mereka musnahkan. Kota-kota berbenteng yang kamu andalkan akan mereka hancurkan.

¹⁸Nevertheless in those days, saith Jehovah, I will not make a full end with you.

¹⁸TUHAN berkata, "Sekalipun demikian, pada waktu itu pun umat-Ku tidak akan Kumusnahkan.

¹⁹And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore hath Jehovah our God done all these things unto us? then shalt thou say to them, As ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours.

¹⁹Tetapi kalau mereka bertanya mengapa Aku melakukan semuanya itu terhadap mereka, katakanlah hai Yeremia, bahwa sebagaimana mereka meninggalkan Aku di negeri mereka sendiri untuk mengabdi kepada dewa-dewa bangsa lain, begitu pula mereka akan menjadi hamba orang-orang asing di negeri lain."

²⁰Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,

²⁰TUHAN menyuruh aku menyampaikan pesan-Nya ini kepada keturunan Yakub yang tinggal di Yehuda,

²¹Hear now this, O foolish and heartless people, who have eyes and see not; who have ears, and hear not.

²¹"Dengarkan, hai kamu orang bodoh dan tolol! Kamu punya mata tapi tidak melihat, punya telinga tapi tidak mendengar!

²²Will ye not fear me? saith Jehovah. Will ye not tremble at my presence, who have set the sand a bound for the sea by a perpetual decree, and it shall not pass it? and its waves toss themselves, but they do not prevail; and they roar, yet can they not pass over it?

²²Akulah TUHAN; mengapa kamu tidak takut kepada-Ku? Seharusnya kamu gemetar terhadap Aku! Akulah yang membuat pantai menjadi perbatasan laut yang tidak dapat dilampauinya untuk selama-lamanya. Laut dapat bergelora dan gelombang dapat mengamuk, tapi tidak dapat melewati perbatasan itu.

²³But this people hath a stubborn and a rebellious heart; they have turned aside and are gone.

²³Tetapi kamu keras kepala dan suka melawan; kamu telah menyeleweng dan meninggalkan Aku.

²⁴And they say not in their heart, Let us now fear Jehovah our God, that giveth rain, both the early and the latter, in its season; who preserveth unto us the appointed weeks of harvest.

²⁴Tidak pernah kamu ingat untuk menghormati Aku, padahal Akulah yang mengirim hujan, baik pada awal maupun pada akhir musim hujan. Aku pula yang memberikan kepadamu musim panen setiap tahun.

²⁵Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden from you what is good.

²⁵Tetapi dosa-dosamu itulah yang menghambat semua yang baik itu sehingga kamu tidak menikmatinya.

²⁶For among my people are found wicked [men]: they lay wait, as fowlers stoop down; they set a trap, they catch men.

²⁶Hai umat-Ku, di antara kamu ada orang-orang jahat. Seperti orang menunggui jerat yang dipasangnya untuk menangkap burung, begitulah mereka memasang jerat untuk menangkap manusia.

²⁷As a cage full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and have enriched themselves.

²⁷Seperti pemburu burung mengisi sangkarnya dengan burung, begitu pula mereka mengisi rumah mereka dengan barang-barang hasil tipuan. Demikianlah mereka menjadi berkuasa dan kaya

²⁸They are become fat, they shine, yea, they surpass in deeds of wickedness; they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, and they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not adjudge.

²⁸serta gemuk dan makmur. Kejahatan mereka tak ada batasnya. Mereka tidak berlaku adil dalam perkara anak-anak yatim piatu, dan tidak membela hak orang-orang yang tertindas.

²⁹Shall I not visit for these things? saith Jehovah; shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

²⁹Tetapi, Aku, TUHAN, akan menghukum mereka karena semuanya itu; Aku akan membalas perbuatan-perbuatan bangsa ini.

³⁰An appalling and horrible thing is committed in the land:

³⁰Sesuatu yang dahsyat dan mengerikan telah terjadi di negeri ini:

³¹the prophets prophesy falsehood, and the priests rule by their means; and my people love [to have it] so. But what will ye do in the end thereof?

³¹nabi-nabi berdusta, imam-imam melayani menurut kemauannya sendiri dan kamu umat-Ku suka akan hal itu. Tetapi apa yang akan kamu lakukan bila tiba hari terakhir?"
