1And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
1Lalu berkatalah Elifas, "Di antara umat manusia, tidak seorang pun berguna bagi Allah. Orang yang sangat berakal budi, hanya berguna bagi dirinya sendiri.
2Can a man be profitable to ùGod? surely it is unto himself that the wise man is profitable.

3Is it any pleasure to the Almighty if thou art righteous? And is it gain [to him] that thou makest thy ways perfect?
3Apakah ada faedahnya bagi Allah, jika engkau melakukan kehendak-Nya? Apakah ada untung bagi-Nya, jika hidupmu sempurna?
4Will he reason with thee for fear of thee? Will he enter with thee into judgment?
4Bukan karena takutmu kepada Allah, engkau dituduh dan dianggap bersalah,
5Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities without end?
5melainkan karena sangat banyak dosamu, dan amat jahat tindakan dan kelakuanmu.
6For thou hast taken a pledge of thy brother for nought, and stripped off the clothing of the naked.
6Jika saudaramu tak dapat membayar hutangnya, kaurampas semua pakaiannya.
7Thou hast not given water to the fainting to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.
7Orang yang lelah tidak kauberi minuman, yang lapar tidak kautawari makanan.
8But the powerful man, he had the land; and the man of high rank dwelt in it.
8Kaupakai jabatan dan kuasa untuk menyita tanah seluruhnya.
9Widows hast thou sent empty away, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.
9Bukan saja kau tidak menolong para janda, tetapi yatim piatu kautindas pula.
10Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;
10Karena itu di sekitarmu, kini penuh jebakan, dan dengan tiba-tiba hatimu diliputi ketakutan.
11Or darkness, that thou canst not see, and floods of waters cover thee.
11Hari semakin gelap, tak dapat engkau melihat; engkau tenggelam dilanda banjir yang dahsyat.
12Is not +God in the height of the heavens? And behold the summit of the stars: how exalted are they!
12Bukankah Allah mendiami langit yang tertinggi, dan memandang ke bawah, ke bintang-bintang yang tinggi sekali?
13And thou sayest, What doth ùGod know? will he judge through the dark cloud?
13Namun engkau bertanya, "Tahu apa Dia? Ia ada di balik awan dan tak dapat mengadili kita."
14Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh on the vault of the heavens.
14Engkau menyangka bahwa pandangan-Nya tertutup awan dan bahwa hanya pada batas antara langit dan bumi Ia berjalan?
15Dost thou mark the ancient path which wicked men have trodden?
15Apakah engkau tetap hendak lewat di jalan yang dipilih orang-orang jahat?
16Who were carried off before the time, whose foundation was overflowed with a flood;
16Mereka direnggut sebelum tiba saat kematiannya, dan dihanyutkan oleh banjir yang melanda.
17Who said unto ùGod, Depart from us! and what could the Almighty do to them?
17Mereka itulah yang berani menolak Yang Mahakuasa, dan mengira Ia tak dapat berbuat apa-apa kepada mereka.
18Yet he filled their houses with good. But the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
18Padahal Allah yang telah menjadikan mereka kaya! Sungguh aku tak mengerti pikiran orang durjana!
19The righteous see it, and are glad; and the innocent laugh them to scorn:
19Orang yang baik, tertawa penuh kegembiraan, bila melihat orang jahat mendapat hukuman.
20Is not he who rose against us destroyed, and doth not the fire consume his residue?
20Segala milik orang jahat telah hancur binasa, dan api membakar habis apa yang masih tersisa.
21Reconcile thyself now with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.
21Nah, Ayub, berdamailah dengan TUHAN, supaya engkau mendapat ketentraman. Kalau itu kaulakukan, pasti engkau mendapat keuntungan.
22Receive, I pray thee, instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in thy heart.
22Terimalah apa yang diajarkan TUHAN kepadamu; simpanlah itu semua di dalam hatimu.
23If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up. If thou remove unrighteousness far from thy tents,
23Kembalilah kepada TUHAN dengan rendah hati kejahatan di rumahmu hendaknya kauakhiri.
24And put the precious ore with the dust, and [the gold of] Ophir among the stones of the torrents,
24Buanglah emasmu yang paling murni; lemparlah ke dasar sungai yang tidak berair lagi.
25Then the Almighty will be thy precious ore, and silver heaped up unto thee;
25Biarlah Yang Mahakuasa menjadi emasmu, dan perakmu yang sangat bermutu.
26Yea, then shalt thou delight thyself in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto +God:
26Maka kau boleh percaya kepada Allah selalu, dan mengetahui bahwa Dia sumber bahagiamu.
27Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he will hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows;
27Bila engkau berdoa, Ia akan menjawabmu, dan engkau dapat menepati segala janjimu.
28And thou shalt decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; and light shall shine upon thy ways.
28Usahamu akan berhasil selalu, dan terang akan menyinari hidupmu.
29When they are made low, then thou shalt say, Rise up! and he shall save him that is of downcast eyes.
29Orang yang sombong direndahkan TUHAN, tetapi yang rendah hati diselamatkan.
30[Even] him that is not innocent shall he deliver; yea, he shall be delivered by the pureness of thy hands.
30Allah akan menolongmu jika kau tidak bersalah, dan jika kau melakukan kehendak-Nya."
