1And Ben-Hadad king of Syria assembled all his host; and there were thirty-two kings with him, and horses and chariots; and he went up and besieged Samaria, and fought against it.
1スリヤの王ベネハダデはその軍勢をことごとく集めた。三十二人の王が彼と共におり、また馬と戦車もあった。彼は上ってサマリヤを囲み、これを攻めた。
2And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel into the city, and said to him, Thus says Ben-Hadad:
2また彼は町に使者をつかわし、イスラエルの王アハブに言った、「ベネハダデはこう申します、
3Thy silver and thy gold is mine; thy wives also and thy children, the goodliest, are mine.
3『あなたの金銀はわたしのもの、またあなたの妻たちと子供たちの最も美しい者もわたしのものです』」。
4And the king of Israel answered and said, My lord, O king, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I have.
4イスラエルの王は答えた、「王、わが主よ、仰せのとおり、わたしと、わたしの持ち物は皆あなたのものです」。
5And the messengers came again, and said, Thus speaks Ben-Hadad saying: I sent to thee indeed, saying, Thou shalt deliver me thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children;
5使者は再びきて言った、「ベネハダデはこう申します、『わたしはさきに人をつかわして、あなたの金銀、妻子を引きわたせと言いました。
6but to-morrow about this time I will send my servants to thee, and they shall search thy house, and the houses of thy servants; and it shall be, that whatsoever is pleasant in thy sight, they shall put in their hand and take away.
6しかし、あすの今ごろ、しもべたちをあなたにつかわします。彼らはあなたの家と、あなたの家来の家を探って、すべて彼らの気にいる物を手に入れて奪い去るでしょう』」。
7And the king of Israel called all the elders of the land and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this [man] seeks mischief; for he sent to me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not.
7そこでイスラエルの王は国の長老をことごとく召して言った、「よく注意して、この人が無理な事を求めているのを知りなさい。彼は人をつかわして、わたしの妻子と金銀を求めたが、わたしはそれを拒まなかった」。
8And all the elders and all the people said to him, Hearken not, nor consent.
8すべての長老および民は皆彼に言った、「聞いてはなりません。承諾してはなりません」。
9And he said to the messengers of Ben-Hadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do; but this thing I cannot do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again.
9それで彼はベネハダデの使者に言った、「王、わが主に告げなさい。『あなたが初めに要求されたことは皆いたしましょう。しかし今度の事はできません』」。使者は去って復命した。
10And Ben-Hadad sent to him and said, The gods do so to me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me!
10ベネハダデは彼に人をつかわして言った、「もしサマリヤのちりが、わたしに従うすべての民の手を満たすに足りるならば、神々がどんなにでも、わたしを罰してくださるように」。
11And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell [him], Let not him that girdeth on boast himself as he that putteth off!
11イスラエルの王は答えた、「『武具を帯びる者は、それを脱ぐ者のように誇ってはならない』と告げなさい」。
12And it came to pass when he heard this word, as he was drinking, he and the kings in the tents, that he said to his servants, Set yourselves. And they set themselves against the city.
12ベネハダデは仮小屋で、王たちと酒を飲んでいたが、この事を聞いて、その家来たちに言った、「戦いの備えをせよ」。彼らは町にむかって戦いの備えをした。
13And behold, a prophet drew near to Ahab king of Israel, and said, Thus saith Jehovah: Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thy hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am Jehovah.
13この時ひとりの預言者がイスラエルの王アハブのもとにきて言った、「主はこう仰せられる、『あなたはこの大軍を見たか。わたしはきょう、これをあなたの手にわたす。あなたは、わたしが主であることを、知るようになるであろう』」。
14And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith Jehovah: By the servants of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall begin the battle? And he said, Thou.
14アハブは言った、「だれにさせましょうか」。彼は言った、「主はこう仰せられる、『地方の代官の家来たちにさせよ』」。アハブは言った、「だれが戦いを始めましょうか」。彼は答えた、「あなたです」。
15And he numbered the servants of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty-two; and after them he numbered all the people, all the children of Israel, seven thousand.
15そこでアハブは地方の代官の家来たちを調べたところ二百三十二人あった。次にすべての民、すなわちイスラエルのすべての人を調べたところ七千人あった。
16And they went out at noon; and Ben-Hadad drank himself drunk in the tents, he and the kings, the thirty-two kings that helped him.
16彼らは昼ごろ出ていったが、ベネハダデは仮小屋で、味方の三十二人の王たちと共に酒を飲んで酔っていた。
17And the servants of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben-Hadad sent out, and they told him saying, There are men come out of Samaria.
17地方の代官の家来たちが先に出ていった。ベネハダデは斥候をつかわしたが、彼らは「サマリヤから人々が出てきた」と報告したので、
18And he said, Whether they be come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they be come out for war, take them alive.
18彼は言った、「和解のために出てきたのであっても、生どりにせよ。また戦いのために出てきたのであっても、生どりにせよ」。
19And these servants of the princes of the provinces came out of the city, and the army that followed them.
19地方の代官の家来たちと、それに従う軍勢が町から出ていって、
20And they slew every one his man; and the Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them; and Ben-Hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with the horsemen.
20おのおのその相手を撃ち殺したので、スリヤびとは逃げた。イスラエルはこれを追ったが、スリヤの王ベネハダデは馬に乗り、騎兵を従えてのがれた。
21And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter.
21イスラエルの王は出ていって、馬と戦車をぶんどり、また大いにスリヤびとを撃ち殺した。
22And the prophet drew near to the king of Israel, and said to him, Go, strengthen thyself, and understand, and see what thou shalt do; for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.
22時に、かの預言者がイスラエルの王のもとにきて言った、「行って、力を養い、なすべき事をよく考えなさい。来年の春にはスリヤの王が、あなたのところに攻め上ってくるからです」。
23And the servants of the king of Syria said to him, Their gods are gods of the mountains; therefore they were stronger than we; but if we fight against them on the plateau, shall we not be stronger than they?
23スリヤの王の家来たちは王に言った、「彼らの神々は山の神ですから彼らがわれわれよりも強かったのです。もしわれわれが平地で戦うならば、必ず彼らよりも強いでしょう。
24And do this: take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put governors in their stead;
24それでこうしなさい。王たちをおのおのその地位から退かせ、総督を置いてそれに代らせなさい。
25and number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot; and we will fight against them on the plateau: shall we not be stronger than they? And he hearkened to their voice, and did so.
25またあなたが失った軍勢に等しい軍勢を集め、馬は馬、戦車は戦車をもって補いなさい。こうしてわれわれが平地で戦うならば必ず彼らよりも強いでしょう」。彼はその言葉を聞きいれて、そのようにした。
26And it came to pass, at the return of the year, that Ben-Hadad numbered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.
26春になって、ベネハダデはスリヤびとを集めて、イスラエルと戦うために、アペクに上ってきた。
27And the children of Israel were numbered and victualled, and they went against them; and the children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of goats; but the Syrians filled the land.
27イスラエルの人々は召集され、糧食を受けて彼らを迎え撃つために出かけた。イスラエルの人々はやぎの二つの小さい群れのように彼らの前に陣取ったが、スリヤびとはその地に満ちていた。
28And the man of God drew near, and spoke to the king of Israel and said, Thus saith Jehovah: Because the Syrians have said, Jehovah is a god of the mountains, but he is not a god of the valleys, I will give all this great multitude into thy hand, and ye shall know that I am Jehovah.
28その時神の人がきて、イスラエルの王に言った、「主はこう仰せられる、『スリヤびとが、主は山の神であって、谷の神ではないと言っているから、わたしはこのすべての大軍をあなたの手にわたす。あなたは、わたしが主であることを知るようになるであろう』」。
29And they encamped one over against the other seven days; and it came to pass that on the seventh day the battle was joined; and the children of Israel smote of the Syrians a hundred thousand footmen in one day.
29彼らは七日の間、互にむかいあって陣取り、七日目になって戦いを交えたが、イスラエルの人々は一日にスリヤびとの歩兵十万人を殺した。
30And the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and the wall fell on twenty-seven thousand men of them that were left. And Ben-Hadad fled, and came into the city, [from] chamber to chamber.
30そのほかの者はアペクの町に逃げこんだが、城壁がくずれて、その残った二万七千人の上に倒れた。ベネハダデは逃げて町に入り、奥の間にはいった。
31And his servants said to him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel; perhaps he will save thy life.
31家来たちは彼に言った、「イスラエルの家の王たちはあわれみ深い王であると聞いています。それでわれわれの腰に荒布をつけ、くびになわをかけて、イスラエルの王の所へ行かせてください。たぶん彼はあなたの命を助けるでしょう」。
32And they girded sackcloth on their loins, and ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben-Hadad says, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.
32そこで彼らは荒布を腰にまき、なわをくびにかけてイスラエルの王の所へ行って言った、「あなたのしもべベネハダデが『どうぞ、わたしの命を助けてください』と申しています」。アハブは言った、「彼はまだ生きているのですか。彼はわたしの兄弟です」。
33And the men took it as a good omen, and hastened to catch what came from him, and they said, Thy brother Ben-Hadad. ... And he said, Go, bring him. And Ben-Hadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.
33その人々はこれを吉兆としてすみやかに彼の言葉をうけ、「そうです。ベネハダデはあなたの兄弟です」と言ったので、彼は言った、「行って彼をつれてきなさい」。それでベネハダデは彼の所に出てきたので、彼はこれを自分の車に乗せた。
34And [Ben-Hadad] said to him, The cities that my father took from thy father I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thyself in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. And I [said Ahab] will send thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and sent him away.
34ベネハダデは彼に言った、「わたしの父が、あなたの父上から取った町々は返します。またわたしの父がサマリヤに造ったように、あなたはダマスコに、あなたのために市場を設けなさい」。アハブは言った、「わたしはこの契約をもってあなたを帰らせましょう」。こうしてアハブは彼と契約を結び、彼を帰らせた。
35And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said to another by the word of Jehovah, Smite me, I pray thee. But the man refused to smite him.
35さて預言者のともがらのひとりが主の言葉に従ってその仲間に言った、「どうぞ、わたしを撃ってください」。しかしその人は撃つことを拒んだので、
36Then said he to him, Because thou hast not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, behold, when thou departest from me, the lion will slay thee. And when he had departed from him, the lion found him and slew him.
36彼はその人に言った、「あなたは主の言葉に聞き従わないゆえ、わたしを離れて行くとすぐ、ししがあなたを殺すでしょう」。その人が彼のそばを離れて行くとすぐ、ししが彼に会って彼を殺した。
37Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man smote him violently, and wounded [him].
37彼はまたほかの人に会って言った、「どうぞ、わたしを撃ってください」。するとその人は彼を撃ち、撃って傷つけた。
38And the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with a sash over his eyes.
38こうしてその預言者は行って、道のかたわらで王を待ち、目にほうたいを当てて姿を変えていた。
39And as the king passed by, he cried to the king and said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man to me and said, Keep this man; if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or thou shalt pay a talent of silver.
39王が通り過ぎる時、王に呼ばわって言った、「しもべはいくさの中に出て行きましたが、ある軍人が、ひとりの人をわたしの所につれてきて言いました、『この人を守っていなさい。もし彼がいなくなれば、あなたの命を彼の命に代えるか、または銀一タラントを払わなければならない』。
40And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said to him, So [is] thy judgment: thyself hast decided [it].
40ところが、しもべはあちらこちらと忙しくしていたので、ついに彼はいなくなりました」。イスラエルの王は彼に言った、「あなたはそのとおりにさばかれなければならない。あなたが自分でそれを定めたのです」。
41Then he hastily took the sash away from his face; and the king of Israel discerned him, that he was of the prophets.
41そこで彼が急いで目のほうたいを取り除いたので、イスラエルの王はそれが預言者のひとりであることを知った。
42And he said to him, Thus saith Jehovah: Because thou hast let go out of thy hand the man that I had devoted to destruction, thy life shall be for his life, and thy people for his people.
42彼は王に言った、「主はこう仰せられる、『わたしが滅ぼそうと定めた人を、あなたは自分の手から放して行かせたので、あなたの命は彼の命に代り、あなたの民は彼の民に代るであろう』と」。イスラエルの王は悲しみ、かつ怒って自分の家におもむき、サマリヤに帰った。
43And the king of Israel went to his house sullen and vexed, and came to Samaria.
