¹Then Samuel took the vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because Jehovah has anointed thee prince over his inheritance?

¹その時サムエルは油のびんを取って、サウルの頭に注ぎ、彼に口づけして言った、「主はあなたに油を注いで、その民イスラエルの君とされたではありませんか。あなたは主の民を治め、周囲の敵の手から彼らを救わなければならない。主があなたに油を注いで、その嗣業の君とされたことの、しるしは次のとおりです。

²When thou goest from me to-day, thou shalt meet two men by Rachel's sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say to thee, The asses are found which thou wentest to seek, and behold, thy father has dismissed the matter of the asses, and is anxious about you, saying, What shall I do for my son?

²あなたがきょう、わたしを離れて、去って行くとき、ベニヤミンの領地のゼルザにあるラケルの墓のかたわらで、ふたりの人に会うでしょう。そして彼らはあなたに言います、『あなたが捜しに行かれたろばは見つかりました。いま父上は、ろばよりもあなたがたの事を心配して、「わが子のことは、どうしよう」と言っておられます』。

³And thou shalt go on forward from thence, and shalt come to the oak of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God, to Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three cakes of bread, and another carrying a flask of wine.

³あなたが、そこからなお進んで、タボルのかしの木の所へ行くと、そこでベテルに上って神を拝もうとする三人の者に会うでしょう。ひとりは三頭の子やぎを連れ、ひとりは三つのパンを携え、ひとりは、ぶどう酒のはいった皮袋一つを携えている。

⁴And they will ask after thy welfare, and give thee two loaves, which thou shalt receive of their hands.

⁴彼らはあなたにあいさつし、二つのパンをくれるでしょう。あなたはそれを、その手から受けなければならない。

⁵After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where are the outposts of the Philistines; and it shall come to pass, when thou comest thither, into the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with lute and tambour and pipe and harp before them; and they themselves prophesying.

⁵その後、あなたは神のギベアへ行く。そこはペリシテびとの守備兵のいる所である。あなたはその所へ行って、町にはいる時、立琴、手鼓、笛、琴を執る人々を先に行かせて、預言しながら高き所から降りてくる一群の預言者に会うでしょう。

⁶And the Spirit of Jehovah will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.

⁶その時、主の霊があなたの上にもはげしく下って、あなたは彼らと一緒に預言し、変って新しい人となるでしょう。

⁷And it shall be, when these signs shall come to thee, thou shalt do as thy hand shall find; for God is with thee.

⁷これらのしるしが、あなたの身に起ったならば、あなたは手当たりしだいになんでもしなさい。神があなたと一緒におられるからです。

⁸And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and behold, I will come down to thee, to offer up burnt-offerings, [and] to sacrifice sacrifices of peace-offerings: seven days shalt thou wait, until I come to thee and inform thee what thou shalt do.

⁸あなたはわたしに先立ってギルガルに下らなければならない。わたしはあなたのもとに下っていって、燔祭を供え、酬恩祭をささげるでしょう。わたしがあなたのもとに行って、あなたのしなければならない事をあなたに示すまで、七日のあいだ待たなければならない」。

⁹And it was [so] that when he turned his back to go away from Samuel, God gave him another heart; and all those signs came to pass that day.

⁹サウルが背をかえしてサムエルを離れたとき、神は彼に新しい心を与えられた。これらのしるしは皆その日に起った。

¹⁰And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.

¹⁰彼らはギベアにきた時、預言者の一群に出会った。そして神の霊が、はげしくサウルの上に下り、彼は彼らのうちにいて預言した。

¹¹And it came to pass, when all that knew him before saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?

¹¹もとからサウルを知っていた人々はみな、サウルが預言者たちと共に預言するのを見て互に言った、「キシの子に何事が起ったのか。サウルもまた預言者たちのうちにいるのか」。

¹²And a man of that place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?

¹²その所のひとりの者が答えた、「彼らの父はだれなのか」。それで「サウルもまた預言者たちのうちにいるのか」というのが、ことわざとなった。

¹³And when he had ended prophesying, he came to the high place.

¹³サウルは預言することを終えて、高き所へ行った。

¹⁴And Saul's uncle said to him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses; and when we saw that they were nowhere, we went to Samuel.

¹⁴サウルのおじが、サウルとそのしもべとに言った、「あなたがたは、どこへ行ったのか」。サウルは言った、「ろばを捜しにいったのですが、どこにもいないので、サムエルのもとに行きました」。

¹⁵And Saul's uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said to you.

¹⁵サウルのおじは言った、「サムエルが、どんなことを言ったか、どうぞ話してください」。

¹⁶And Saul said to his uncle, He told us for certain that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, of which Samuel had spoken, he told him not.

¹⁶サウルはおじに言った、「ろばが見つかったと、はっきり、わたしたちに言いました」。しかしサムエルが言った王国のことについて、おじには何も告げなかった。

¹⁷And Samuel called the people together to Jehovah to Mizpah.

¹⁷さて、サムエルは民をミヅパで主の前に集め、

¹⁸And he said to the children of Israel, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, *I* brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all the kingdoms that oppressed you;

¹⁸イスラエルの人々に言った、「イスラエルの神、主はこう仰せられる、『わたしはイスラエルをエジプトから導き出し、あなたがたをエジプトびとの手、およびすべてあなたがたをしえたげる王国の手から救い出した』。

¹⁹but *ye* have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your troubles, and have said unto him, [Nay,] but a king shalt thou set over us. Now therefore present yourselves before Jehovah by your tribes, and by your thousands.

¹⁹しかしあなたがたは、きょう、あなたがたをその悩みと苦しみの中から救われるあなたがたの神を捨て、その上、『いいえ、われわれの上に王を立てよ』と言う。それゆえ今、あなたがたは、部族にしたがい、また氏族にしたがって、主の前に出なさい」。

²⁰And Samuel caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken.

²⁰こうしてサムエルがイスラエルのすべての部族を呼び寄せた時、ベニヤミンの部族が、くじに当った。

²¹And he caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, and the family of Matri was taken; and Saul the son of Kish was taken. And they sought him, but he was not to be found.

²¹またベニヤミンの部族をその氏族にしたがって呼び寄せた時、マテリの氏族が、くじに当り、マテリの氏族を人ごとに呼び寄せた時、キシの子サウルが、くじに当った。しかし人々が彼を捜した時、見つからなかった。

²²Therefore they inquired of Jehovah further, Will the man yet come hither? And Jehovah answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the baggage.

²²そこでまた主に「その人はここにきているのですか」と問うと、主は言われた、「彼は荷物の間に隠れている」。

²³And they ran and fetched him thence; and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.

²³人々は走って行って、彼をそこから連れてきた。彼は民の中に立ったが、肩から上は、民のどの人よりも高かった。

²⁴And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom Jehovah has chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted and said, May the king live.

²⁴サムエルはすべての民に言った、「主が選ばれた人をごらんなさい。民のうちに彼のような人はないではありませんか」。民はみな「王万歳」と叫んだ。

²⁵And Samuel told the people the right of the kingdom, and wrote it in the book, and laid it before Jehovah. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.

²⁵その時サムエルは王国のならわしを民に語り、それを書にしるして、主の前におさめた。こうしてサムエルはすべての民をそれぞれ家に帰らせた。

²⁶And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and with him went the band, whose hearts God had touched.

²⁶サウルもまたギベアにある彼の家に帰った。そして神にその心を動かされた勇士たちも彼と共に行った。しかし、よこしまな人々は「この男がどうしてわれわれを救うことができよう」と言って、彼を軽んじ、贈り物をしなかった。しかしサウルは黙っていた。

²⁷But the children of Belial said, How should this man save us? And they despised him, and brought him no gifts. But he was as one deaf.
