¹And the boy Samuel ministered to Jehovah before Eli. And the word of Jehovah was rare in those days; a vision was not frequent.

¹わらべサムエルは、エリの前で、主に仕えていた。そのころ、主の言葉はまれで、黙示も常ではなかった。

²And it came to pass at that time, when Eli lay in his place (now his eyes began to grow dim, he could not see),

²さてエリは、しだいに目がかすんで、見ることができなくなり、そのとき自分のへやで寝ていた。

³and the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel lay in the temple of Jehovah, where the ark of God was,

³神のともしびはまだ消えず、サムエルが神の箱のある主の神殿に寝ていた時、

⁴that Jehovah called to Samuel. And he said, Here am I.

⁴主は「サムエルよ、サムエルよ」と呼ばれた。彼は「はい、ここにおります」と言って、

⁵And he ran to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I did not call: lie down again. And he went and lay down.

⁵エリの所へ走っていって言った、「あなたがお呼びになりました。わたしは、ここにおります」。しかしエリは言った、「わたしは呼ばない。帰って寝なさい」。彼は行って寝た。

⁶And Jehovah called again, Samuel! And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I did not call, my son: lie down again.

⁶主はまたかさねて「サムエルよ、サムエルよ」と呼ばれた。サムエルは起きてエリのもとへ行って言った、「あなたがお呼びになりました。わたしは、ここにおります」。エリは言った、「子よ、わたしは呼ばない。もう一度寝なさい」。

⁷Now Samuel did not yet know Jehovah, neither had the word of Jehovah yet been revealed to him.

⁷サムエルはまだ主を知らず、主の言葉がまだ彼に現されなかった。

⁸And Jehovah called again the third time, Samuel! And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And Eli perceived that Jehovah was calling the boy.

⁸主はまた三度目にサムエルを呼ばれたので、サムエルは起きてエリのもとへ行って言った、「あなたがお呼びになりました。わたしは、ここにおります」。その時、エリは主がわらべを呼ばれたのであることを悟った。

⁹And Eli said to Samuel, Go, lie down; and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, Jehovah, for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

⁹そしてエリはサムエルに言った、「行って寝なさい。もしあなたを呼ばれたら、『しもべは聞きます。主よ、お話しください』と言いなさい」。サムエルは行って自分の所で寝た。

¹⁰And Jehovah came, and stood, and called as at the other times, Samuel, Samuel! And Samuel said, Speak, for thy servant heareth.

¹⁰主はきて立ち、前のように、「サムエルよ、サムエルよ」と呼ばれたので、サムエルは言った、「しもべは聞きます。お話しください」。

¹¹And Jehovah said to Samuel, Behold, I do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.

¹¹その時、主はサムエルに言われた、「見よ、わたしはイスラエルのうちに一つの事をする。それを聞く者はみな、耳が二つとも鳴るであろう。

¹²In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house; I will begin and make an end.

¹²その日には、わたしが、かつてエリの家について話したことを、はじめから終りまでことごとく、エリに行うであろう。

¹³For I have declared to him that I will judge his house for ever, for the iniquity which he hath known: because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.

¹³わたしはエリに、彼が知っている悪事のゆえに、その家を永久に罰することを告げる。その子らが神をけがしているのに、彼がそれをとめなかったからである。

¹⁴And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be expiated with sacrifice or oblation for ever.

¹⁴それゆえ、わたしはエリの家に誓う。エリの家の悪は、犠牲や供え物をもってしても、永久にあがなわれないであろう」。

¹⁵And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of Jehovah. And Samuel feared to declare the vision to Eli.

¹⁵サムエルは朝まで寝て、主の宮の戸をあけたが、サムエルはその幻のことをエリに語るのを恐れた。

¹⁶And Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he said, Here am I.

¹⁶しかしエリはサムエルを呼んで言った、「わが子サムエルよ」。サムエルは言った、「はい、ここにおります」。

¹⁷And he said, What is the word that he has spoken to thee? I pray thee, keep it not back from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou keep back anything from me of all the word that he spoke to thee.

¹⁷エリは言った、「何事をお告げになったのか。隠さず話してください。もしお告げになったことを一つでも隠して、わたしに言わないならば、どうぞ神があなたを罰し、さらに重く罰せられるように」。

¹⁸And Samuel told him all the words, and kept nothing back from him. And he said, It is Jehovah: let him do what is good in his sight.

¹⁸そこでサムエルは、その事をことごとく話して、何も彼に隠さなかった。エリは言った、「それは主である。どうぞ主が、良いと思うことを行われるように」。

¹⁹And Samuel grew, and Jehovah was with him, and let none of his words fall to the ground.

¹⁹サムエルは育っていった。主が彼と共におられて、その言葉を一つも地に落ちないようにされたので、

²⁰And all Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, knew that Samuel was established a prophet of Jehovah.

²⁰ダンからベエルシバまで、イスラエルのすべての人は、サムエルが主の預言者と定められたことを知った。主はふたたびシロで現れられた。すなわち主はシロで、主の言葉によって、サムエルに自らを現された。こうしてサムエルの言葉は、あまねくイスラエルの人々に及んだ。

²¹And Jehovah appeared again at Shiloh; for Jehovah revealed himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of Jehovah.

²¹主はふたたびシロで現れられた。すなわち主はシロで、主の言葉によって、サムエルに自らを現された。こうしてサムエルの言葉は、あまねくイスラエルの人々に及んだ。
