¹And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Eben-ezer to Ashdod.

²And the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.

²そしてペリシテびとはその神の箱を取ってダゴンの宮に運びこみ、ダゴンのかたわらに置いた。

³And when they of Ashdod arose early the next day, behold, Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of Jehovah. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.

³アシドドの人々が、次の日、早く起きて見ると、ダゴンが主の箱の前に、うつむきに地に倒れていたので、彼らはダゴンを起して、それをもとの所に置いた。

⁴And when they arose early the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of Jehovah; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the fish-stump was left to him.

⁴その次の朝また早く起きて見ると、ダゴンはまた、主の箱の前に、うつむきに地に倒れていた。そしてダゴンの頭と両手とは切れて離れ、しきいの上にあり、ダゴンはただ胴体だけとなっていた。

⁵Therefore neither the priests of Dagon nor any that come into Dagon's house tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.

⁵それゆえダゴンの祭司たちやダゴンの宮にはいる人々は、だれも今日にいたるまで、アシドドのダゴンのしきいを踏まない。

⁶And the hand of Jehovah was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he laid them waste, and smote them with hemorrhoids, -- Ashdod and its borders.

⁶そして主の手はアシドドびとの上にきびしく臨み、主は腫物をもってアシドドとその領域の人々を恐れさせ、また悩まされた。

⁷And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us; for his hand is severe upon us, and upon Dagon our god.

⁷アシドドの人々は、このありさまを見て言った、「イスラエルの神の箱を、われわれの所に、とどめ置いてはならない。その神の手が、われわれと、われわれの神ダゴンの上にきびしく臨むからである」。

⁸And they sent and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they said, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about to Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about [thither].

⁸そこで彼らは人をつかわして、ペリシテびとの君たちを集めて言った、「イスラエルの神の箱をどうしましょう」。彼らは言った、「イスラエルの神の箱はガテに移そう」。人々はイスラエルの神の箱をそこに移した。

⁹And it came to pass that, after they had carried it about, the hand of Jehovah was against the city with very great panic; and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and hemorrhoids broke out upon them.

⁹彼らがそれを移すと、主の手がその町に臨み、非常な騒ぎが起った。そして老若を問わず町の人々を撃たれたので、彼らの身に腫物ができた。

¹⁰And they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, when the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to kill us and our people.

¹⁰そこで人々は神の箱をエクロンに送ったが、神の箱がエクロンに着いた時、エクロンの人々は叫んで言った、「彼らがイスラエルの神の箱をわれわれの所に移したのは、われわれと民を滅ぼすためである」。

¹¹And they sent and gathered all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to its own place, that it kill us not, and our people. For there was deadly alarm throughout the city: the hand of God was very heavy there;

¹¹そこで彼らは人をつかわして、ペリシテびとの君たちをみな集めて言った、「イスラエルの神の箱を送り出して、もとの所に返し、われわれと民を滅ぼすことのないようにしよう」。恐ろしい騒ぎが町中に起っていたからである。そこには神の手が非常にきびしく臨んでいたので、死なない人は腫物をもって撃たれ、町の叫びは天に達した。

¹²and the men that died not were smitten with the hemorrhoids; and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
