¹And the men of Kirjath-jearim came, and fetched up the ark of Jehovah, and brought it into the house of Abinadab on the hill, and hallowed Eleazar his son to keep the ark of Jehovah.

¹キリアテ・ヤリムの人々は、きて、主の箱を携え上り、丘の上のアビナダブの家に持ってきて、その子エレアザルを聖別して、主の箱を守らせた。

²And it came to pass, from the day that the ark abode in Kirjath-jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years. And all the house of Israel lamented after Jehovah.

²その箱は久しくキリアテ・ヤリムにとどまって、二十年を経た。イスラエルの全家は主を慕って嘆いた。

³And Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, If ye return to Jehovah with all your heart, put away the strange gods and the Ashtoreths from among you, and apply your hearts unto Jehovah, and serve him only; and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.

³その時サムエルはイスラエルの全家に告げていった、「もし、あなたがたが一心に主に立ち返るのであれば、ほかの神々とアシタロテを、あなたがたのうちから捨て去り、心を主に向け、主にのみ仕えなければならない。そうすれば、主はあなたがたをペリシテびとの手から救い出されるであろう」。

⁴And the children of Israel put away the Baals and the Ashtoreths and served Jehovah only.

⁴そこでイスラエルの人々はバアルとアシタロテを捨て去り、ただ主にのみ仕えた。

⁵And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray Jehovah for you.

⁵サムエルはまた言った、「イスラエルびとを、ことごとくミヅパに集めなさい。わたしはあなたがたのために主に祈りましょう」。

⁶And they gathered together to Mizpah, and drew water, and poured it out before Jehovah, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against Jehovah. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpah.

⁶人々はミヅパに集まり、水をくんでそれを主の前に注ぎ、その日、断食してその所で言った、「われわれは主に対して罪を犯した」。サムエルはミヅパでイスラエルの人々をさばいた。

⁷And the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together at Mizpah; and the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel; and the children of Israel heard [it], and were afraid of the Philistines.

⁷イスラエルの人々のミヅパに集まったことがペリシテびとに聞えたので、ペリシテびとの君たちは、イスラエルに攻め上ってきた。イスラエルの人々はそれを聞いて、ペリシテびとを恐れた。

⁸And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry to Jehovah our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.

⁸そしてイスラエルの人々はサムエルに言った、「われわれのため、われわれの神、主に叫ぶことを、やめないでください。そうすれば主がペリシテびとの手からわれわれを救い出されるでしょう」。

⁹And Samuel took a sucking-lamb, and offered it as a whole burnt-offering to Jehovah; and Samuel cried to Jehovah for Israel, and Jehovah answered him.

⁹そこでサムエルは乳を飲む小羊一頭をとり、これを全き燔祭として主にささげた。そしてサムエルはイスラエルのために主に叫んだので、主はこれに答えられた。

¹⁰And as Samuel was offering up the burnt-offering, the Philistines advanced to battle against Israel. And Jehovah thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were routed before Israel.

¹⁰サムエルが燔祭をささげていた時、ペリシテびとはイスラエルと戦おうとして近づいてきた。しかし主はその日、大いなる雷をペリシテびとの上にとどろかせて、彼らを乱されたので、彼らはイスラエルびとの前に敗れて逃げた。

¹¹And the men of Israel went out of Mizpah, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, as far as below Beth-car.

¹¹イスラエルの人々はミヅパを出てペリシテびとを追い、これを撃って、ベテカルの下まで行った。

¹²And Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and called the name of it Eben-ezer, and said, Hitherto Jehovah has helped us.

¹²その時サムエルは一つの石をとってミヅパとエシャナの間にすえ、「主は今に至るまでわれわれを助けられた」と言って、その名をエベネゼルと名づけた。

¹³And the Philistines were subdued, and came no more into the borders of Israel; and the hand of Jehovah was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

¹³こうしてペリシテびとは征服され、ふたたびイスラエルの領地に、はいらなかった。サムエルの一生の間、主の手が、ペリシテびとを防いだ。

¹⁴And the cities that the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even to Gath; and their territory did Israel deliver out of the hand of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorite.

¹⁴ペリシテびとがイスラエルから取った町々は、エクロンからガテまで、イスラエルにかえり、イスラエルはその周囲の地をもペリシテびとの手から取りかえした。またイスラエルとアモリびととの間には平和があった。

¹⁵And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.

¹⁵サムエルは一生の間イスラエルをさばいた。

¹⁶And he went from year to year in circuit to Bethel, and Gilgal, and Mizpah, and judged Israel in all those places.

¹⁶年ごとにサムエルはベテルとギルガル、およびミヅパを巡って、その所々でイスラエルをさばき、ラマに帰った。そこに彼の家があったからである。その所でも彼はイスラエルをさばき、またそこで主に祭壇を築いた。

¹⁷And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house, and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar to Jehovah.
