¹And it came to pass after this [that] the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them certain of the Maonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle.

¹この後モアブびと、アンモンびとおよびメウニびとらがヨシャパテと戦おうと攻めてきた。

²And they came and told Jehoshaphat saying, A great multitude is come against thee from beyond the sea, from Syria; and behold, they are in Hazazon-tamar, which is Engedi.

²その時ある人がきて、ヨシャパテに告げて言った、「海のかなたのエドムから大軍があなたに攻めて来ます。見よ、彼らはハザゾン・タマル（すなわちエンゲデ）にいます」。

³And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek Jehovah, and proclaimed a fast throughout Judah.

³そこでヨシャパテは恐れ、主に顔を向けて助けを求め、ユダ全国に断食をふれさせた。

⁴And Judah gathered themselves together to ask [help] of Jehovah: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek Jehovah.

⁴それでユダはこぞって集まり、主の助けを求めた。すなわちユダのすべての町から人々が来て主を求めた。

⁵And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of Jehovah, before the new court;

⁵そこでヨシャパテは主の宮の新しい庭の前で、ユダとエルサレムの会衆の中に立って、

⁶and he said, Jehovah, God of our fathers, art not thou God in the heavens, and rulest thou not over all the kingdoms of the nations? And in thy hand there is power and might, and none can withstand thee.

⁶言った、「われわれの先祖の神、主よ、あなたは天にいます神ではありませんか。異邦人のすべての国を治められるではありませんか。あなたの手には力があり、勢いがあって、あなたに逆らいうる者はありません。

⁷Hast not thou, our God, dispossessed the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and given it for ever to the seed of Abraham, thy friend?

⁷われわれの神よ、あなたはこの国の民をあなたの民イスラエルの前から追い払って、あなたの友アブラハムの子孫に、これを永遠に与えられたではありませんか。

⁸And they have dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying,

⁸彼らはここに住み、あなたの名のためにここに聖所を建てて言いました、

⁹If evil come upon us, sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, and we stand before this house and before thee -- for thy name is in this house -- and cry unto thee in our distress, then thou wilt hear and save.

⁹『つるぎ、審判、疫病、ききんなどの災がわれわれに臨む時、われわれはこの宮の前に立って、あなたの前におり、その悩みの中であなたに呼ばわります。すると、あなたは聞いて助けられます。あなたの名はこの宮にあるからです』と。

¹⁰And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab, and those of mount Seir, amongst whom thou wouldest not let Israel go when they came out of the land of Egypt, (for they turned from them, and destroyed them not,)

¹⁰今アンモン、モアブ、およびセイル山の人々をごらんなさい。昔イスラエルがエジプトの国から出てきた時、あなたはイスラエルに彼らを侵すことをゆるされなかったので、イスラエルは彼らを離れて、滅ぼしませんでした。

¹¹behold, they reward us, in coming to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to possess.

¹¹彼らがわれわれに報いるところをごらんください。彼らは来て、あなたがわれわれに賜わったあなたの領地からわれわれを追い払おうとしています。

¹²Our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might in presence of this great company which cometh against us, neither know we what to do; but our eyes are upon thee.

¹²われわれの神よ、あなたは彼らをさばかれないのですか。われわれはこのように攻めて来る大軍に当る力がなく、またいかになすべきかを知りません。ただ、あなたを仰ぎ望むのみです」。

¹³And all Judah stood before Jehovah, with their little ones, their wives, and their sons.

¹³ユダの人々はその幼な子、その妻、および子供たちと共に皆主の前に立っていた。

¹⁴And upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, upon him came the Spirit of Jehovah, in the midst of the congregation;

¹⁴その時主の霊が会衆の中でアサフの子孫であるレビびとヤハジエルに臨んだ。ヤハジエルはゼカリヤの子、ゼカリヤはベナヤの子、ベナヤはエイエルの子、エイエルはマッタニヤの子である。

¹⁵and he said, Be attentive, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat! Thus saith Jehovah unto you: Fear not, nor be dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.

¹⁵ヤハジエルは言った、「ユダの人々、エルサレムの住民、およびヨシャパテ王よ、聞きなさい。主はあなたがたにこう仰せられる、『この大軍のために恐れてはならない。おののいてはならない。これはあなたがたの戦いではなく、主の戦いだからである。

¹⁶To-morrow go down against them: behold, they come up by the ascent of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the valley, before the wilderness of Jeruel.

¹⁶あす、彼らの所へ攻め下りなさい。見よ、彼らはヂヅの坂から上って来る。あなたがたはエルエルの野の東、谷の端でこれに会うであろう。

¹⁷Ye shall not have to fight on this occasion: set yourselves, stand and see the salvation of Jehovah [who is] with you! Judah and Jerusalem, fear not nor be dismayed; to-morrow go out against them, and Jehovah will be with you.

¹⁷この戦いには、あなたがたは戦うに及ばない。ユダおよびエルサレムよ、あなたがたは進み出て立ち、あなたがたと共におられる主の勝利を見なさい。恐れてはならない。おののいてはならない。あす、彼らの所に攻めて行きなさい。主はあなたがたと共におられるからである』」。

¹⁸And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before Jehovah, worshipping Jehovah.

¹⁸ヨシャパテは地にひれ伏した。ユダの人々およびエルサレムの民も主の前に伏して、主を拝した。

¹⁹And the Levites, of the sons of the Kohathites, and of the sons of the Korahites, stood up to praise Jehovah the God of Israel with an exceeding loud voice.

¹⁹その時コハテびとの子孫、およびコラびとの子孫であるレビびとが立ち上がり、大声をあげてイスラエルの神、主をさんびした。

²⁰And they rose early in the morning, and went forth towards the wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believe in Jehovah your God, and ye shall be established; believe his prophets, and ye shall prosper!

²⁰彼らは朝早く起きてテコアの野に出て行った。その出て行くとき、ヨシャパテは立って言った、「ユダの人々およびエルサレムの民よ、わたしに聞きなさい。あなたがたの神、主を信じなさい。そうすればあなたがたは堅く立つことができる。主の預言者を信じなさい。そうすればあなたがたは成功するでしょう」。

²¹And he consulted with the people, and appointed singers to Jehovah, and those that should praise in holy splendour, as they went forth before the armed men, and say, Give thanks to Jehovah; for his loving-kindness [endureth] for ever!

²¹彼はまた民と相談して人々を任命し、聖なる飾りを着けて軍勢の前に進ませ、主に向かって歌をうたい、かつさんびさせ、「主に感謝せよ、そのいつくしみはとこしえに絶えることがない」と言わせた。

²²And when they began the song of triumph and praise, Jehovah set liers-in-wait against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, who had come against Judah, and they were smitten.

²²そして彼らが歌をうたい、さんびし始めた時、主は伏兵を設け、かのユダに攻めてきたアンモン、モアブ、セイル山の人々に向かわせられたので、彼らは打ち敗られた。

²³And the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, to exterminate and destroy [them]; and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another.

²³すなわちアンモンとモアブの人々は立ち上がって、セイル山の民に敵し、彼らを殺して全く滅ぼしたが、セイルの民を殺し尽すに及んで、彼らもおのおの互に助けて滅ぼしあった。

²⁴And Judah came on to the mountain-watch in the wilderness, and they looked toward the multitude; and behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none had escaped.

²⁴ユダの人々は野の物見やぐらへ行って、かの群衆を見たが、地に倒れた死体だけであって、ひとりものがれた者はなかった。

²⁵And Jehoshaphat and his people came to plunder the spoil of them, and they found among them in abundance, both riches with the dead bodies, and precious things, and they stripped off for themselves more than they could carry away; and they were three days in plundering the spoil, it was so much.

²⁵それでヨシャパテとその民は彼らの物を奪うために来て見ると、多数の家畜、財宝、衣服および宝石などおびただしくあったので、おのおのそれをはぎ取ったが、運びきれないほどたくさんで、かすめ取るに三日もかかった。それほど物が多かったのである。

²⁶And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Berachah, for there they blessed Jehovah; therefore the name of that place was called The valley of Berachah, to this day.

²⁶四日目に彼らはベラカの谷に集まり、その所で主を祝福した。それでその所の名を今日までベラカの谷と呼んでいる。

²⁷And they returned, all the men of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat at their head, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for Jehovah had made them to rejoice over their enemies.

²⁷そしてユダとエルサレムの人々は皆ヨシャパテを先に立て、喜んでエルサレムに帰ってきた。主が彼らにその敵のことによって喜びを与えられたからである。

²⁸And they came to Jerusalem with lutes and harps and trumpets, to the house of Jehovah.

²⁸すなわち彼らは立琴、琴およびラッパをもってエルサレムの主の宮に来た。

²⁹And the terror of God was on all the kingdoms of the lands, when they had heard that Jehovah fought against the enemies of Israel.

²⁹そしてもろもろの国の民は主がイスラエルの敵と戦われたことを聞いて神を恐れた。

³⁰And the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet; and his God gave him rest round about.

³⁰こうして神が四方に安息を賜わったので、ヨシャパテの国は穏やかであった。

³¹And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty-five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Azubah, daughter of Shilhi.

³¹このようにヨシャパテはユダを治めた。彼は三十五歳の時、王となり、二十五年の間エルサレムで世を治めた。彼の母の名はアズバといってシルヒの娘である。

³²And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and turned not aside from it, doing what was right in the sight of Jehovah.

³²ヨシャパテは父アサの道を歩んでそれを離れず、主の目に正しいと見られることを行った。

³³Only, the high places were not removed; and as yet the people had not directed their hearts to the God of their fathers.

³³しかし高き所は除かず、また民はその先祖の神に心を傾けなかった。

³⁴And the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the words of Jehu the son of Hanani, which are inserted in the book of the kings of Israel.

³⁴ヨシャパテのその他の始終の行為は、ハナニの子エヒウの書にしるされ、イスラエルの列王の書に載せられてある。

³⁵And after this Jehoshaphat king of Judah joined himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly.

³⁵この後ユダの王ヨシャパテはイスラエルの王アハジヤと相結んだ。アハジヤは悪を行った。

³⁶And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish; and they made the ships in Ezion-geber.

³⁶ヨシャパテはタルシシへ行く船を造るためにアハジヤと相結び、エジオン・ゲベルで一緒に船数隻を造った。その時マレシャのドダワの子エリエゼルはヨシャパテに向かって預言し、「あなたはアハジヤと相結んだので、主はあなたの造った物をこわされます」と言ったが、その船は難破して、タルシシへ行くことができなかった。

³⁷And Eliezer the son of Dodavah, of Mareshah, prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, Jehovah has broken thy works. And the ships were broken, and could not go to Tarshish.

³⁷その時マレシャのドダワの子エリエゼルはヨシャパテに向かって預言し、「あなたはアハジヤと相結んだので、主はあなたの造った物をこわされます」と言ったが、その船は難破して、タルシシへ行くことができなかった。
