1And it came to pass when king Hezekiah heard [it], that he rent his garments, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of Jehovah.
1ヒゼキヤ王はこれを聞いて、衣を裂き、荒布を身にまとって主に宮に入り、
2And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz.
2宮内卿エリアキムと書記官セブナおよび祭司のうちの年長者たちに荒布をまとわせて、アモツの子預言者イザヤのもとにつかわした。
3And they said to him, Thus says Hezekiah: This day is a day of trouble and of rebuke and of reviling; for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.
3彼らはイザヤに言った、「ヒゼキヤはこう申されます、『きょうは悩みと、懲しめと、はずかしめの日です。胎児がまさに生れようとして、これを産み出す力がないのです。
4It may be Jehovah thy God will hear all the words of Rab-shakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to reproach the living God; and will rebuke the words which Jehovah thy God has heard. Therefore lift up a prayer for the remnant that is left.
4あなたの神、主はラブシャケがその主君アッスリヤの王につかわされて、生ける神をそしったもろもろの言葉を聞かれたかもしれません。そしてあなたの神、主はその聞いた言葉をとがめられるかもしれません。それゆえ、この残っている者のために祈をささげてください』」。
5And the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
5ヒゼキヤ王の家来たちがイザヤのもとに来たとき、
6And Isaiah said to them, Thus shall ye say to your master: Thus saith Jehovah: Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.
6イザヤは彼らに言った、「あなたがたの主君にこう言いなさい、『主はこう仰せられる、アッスリヤの王の家来たちが、わたしをそしった言葉を聞いて恐れるには及ばない。
7Behold, I will put a spirit into him, and he shall hear tidings, and shall return to his own land; and I will make him to fall by the sword in his own land.
7見よ、わたしは一つの霊を彼らのうちに送って、一つのうわさを聞かせ、彼を自分の国へ帰らせて、自分の国でつるぎに倒れさせるであろう』」。
8And Rab-shakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he had departed from Lachish.
8ラブシャケは引き返して、アッスリヤの王がリブナを攻めているところへ行った。彼が王のラキシを去ったことを聞いたからである。
9And he heard say of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, Behold, he has come forth to make war with thee. And he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying,
9この時アッスリヤの王はエチオピヤの王テルハカについて、「彼はあなたと戦うために出てきた」と人々がいうのを聞いたので、再び使者をヒゼキヤにつかわして言った、
10Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah saying: Let not thy God, upon whom thou reliest, deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
10「ユダの王ヒゼキヤにこう言いなさい、『あなたは、エルサレムはアッスリヤの王の手に陥ることはない、と言うあなたの信頼する神に欺かれてはならない。
11Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all countries, destroying them utterly; and shalt thou be delivered?
11あなたはアッスリヤの王たちがもろもろの国々にした事、彼らを全く滅ぼした事を聞いている。どうしてあなたが救われることができようか。
12Have the gods of the nations which my fathers have destroyed delivered them: Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden that were in Thelassar?
12わたしの父たちはゴザン、ハラン、レゼフ、およびテラサルにいたエデンの人々を滅ぼしたが、その国々の神々は彼らを救ったか。
13Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?
13ハマテの王、アルパデの王、セパルワイムの町の王、ヘナの王およびイワの王はどこにいるのか』」。
14And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up into the house of Jehovah, and spread it before Jehovah.
14ヒゼキヤは使者の手から手紙を受け取ってそれを読み、主の宮にのぼっていって、主の前にそれをひろげ、
15And Hezekiah prayed before Jehovah and said, Jehovah, God of Israel, who sittest [between] the cherubim, thou, the Same, thou alone art the God of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made the heavens and the earth.
15そしてヒゼキヤは主の前に祈って言った、「ケルビムの上に座しておられるイスラエルの神、主よ、地のすべての国のうちで、ただあなただけが神でいらせられます。あなたは天と地を造られました。
16Incline thine ear, Jehovah, and hear; open, Jehovah, thine eyes, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, who hath sent him to reproach the living God.
16主よ、耳を傾けて聞いてください。主よ、目を開いてごらんください。セナケリブが生ける神をそしるために書き送った言葉をお聞きください。
17Of a truth, Jehovah, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands,
17主よ、まことにアッスリヤの王たちはもろもろの民とその国々を滅ぼし、
18and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone; therefore have they destroyed them.
18またその神々を火に投げ入れました。それらは神ではなく、人の手の作ったもので、木や石だから滅ぼされたのです。
19And now, Jehovah our God, I beseech thee, save us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou, Jehovah, art God, thou only.
19われわれの神、主よ、どうぞ、今われわれを彼の手から救い出してください。そうすれば地の国々は皆、主であるあなただけが神でいらせられることを知るようになるでしょう」。
20And Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith Jehovah the God of Israel: That which thou hast prayed to me concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard.
20その時アモツの子イザヤは人をつかわしてヒゼキヤに言った、「イスラエルの神、主はこう仰せられる、『アッスリヤの王セナケリブについてあなたがわたしに祈ったことは聞いた』。
21This is the word that Jehovah has spoken against him: The virgin-daughter of Zion despiseth thee, laugheth thee to scorn; The daughter of Jerusalem shaketh her head at thee.
21主が彼について語られた言葉はこうである、『処女であるシオンの娘はあなたを侮り、あなたをあざける。エルサレムの娘はあなたのうしろで頭を振る。
22Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted the voice? Against the Holy one of Israel hast thou lifted up thine eyes on high.
22あなたはだれをそしり、だれをののしったのか。あなたはだれにむかって声をあげ、目を高くあげたのか。イスラエルの聖者にむかってしたのだ。
23By thy messengers thou hast reproached the Lord, and hast said, With the multitude of my chariots have I come up To the height of the mountain, to the recesses of Lebanon, And I will cut down its tall cedars, the choice of its cypresses; And I will enter into its furthest lodging-place, [into] the forest of its fruitful field.
23あなたは使者をもって主をそしって言った、「わたしは多くの戦車をひきいて山々の頂にのぼり、レバノンの奥に行き、たけの高い香柏と最も良いいとすぎを切り倒し、またその果の野営地に行き、その密林にはいった。
24I have digged, and have drunk strange waters, And with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the streams of Matsor.
24わたしは井戸を掘って外国の水を飲んだ。わたしは足の裏で、エジプトのすべての川を踏みからした」。
25Hast thou not heard long ago that I have done it? And that from ancient days I formed it? Now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest lay waste fortified cities [into] ruinous heaps.
25あなたは聞かなかったか、昔わたしがこれを定めたことを。堅固な町々をあなたが荒塚とすることも、いにしえの日からわたしが計画して今これをおこなうのだ。
26And their inhabitants were powerless, They were dismayed and put to shame; They were [as] the growing grass, and [as] the green herb, [As] the grass on the housetops, and grain blighted before it be grown up.
26そのうちに住む民は力弱くおののき、恥をいだいて、野の草のように、青菜のようになり、育たないで枯れる屋根の草のようになった。
27But I know thine abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, And thy raging against me.
27わたしはあなたのすわること、出入りすること、わたしにむかって怒り叫んだことをも知っている。
28Because thy raging against me and thine arrogance is come up into mine ears, I will put my ring in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, And I will make thee go back by the way by which thou camest.
28あなたがわたしにむかって怒り叫んだことと、あなたの高慢がわたしの耳にはいったため、わたしはあなたの鼻に輪をつけ、あなたの口にくつわをはめて、あなたをもときた道へ引きもどすであろう』。
29And this [shall be] the sign unto thee: They shall eat this year such as groweth of itself, And in the second year that which springeth of the same; But in the third year sow ye and reap, And plant vineyards and eat the fruit thereof.
29『あなたに与えるしるしはこれである。すなわち、ことしは落ち穂からはえたものを食べ、二年目にはまたその落ち穂からはえたものを食べ、三年目には種をまき、刈り入れ、ぶどう畑を作ってその実を食べるであろう。
30And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah Shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward;
30ユダの家ののがれて残る者は再び下に根を張り、上に実を結ぶであろう。
31For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, And out of mount Zion they that escape: The zeal of Jehovah [of hosts] shall do this.
31すなわち残る者がエルサレムから出てき、のがれた者がシオンの山から出て来るであろう。主の熱心がこれをされるであろう』。
32Therefore thus saith Jehovah concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come into this city, Nor shoot an arrow there, Nor come before it with shield, Nor cast a bank against it.
32それゆえ、主はアッスリヤの王について、こう仰せられる、『彼はこの町にこない、またここに矢を放たない、盾をもってその前に来ることなく、また塁を築いてこれを攻めることはない。
33By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, And shall not come into this city, saith Jehovah.
33彼は来た道を帰って、この町に、はいることはない。主がこれを言う。
34And I will defend this city, to save it, For mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.
34わたしは自分のため、またわたしのしもべダビデのためにこの町を守って、これを救うであろう』」。
35And it came to pass that night, that an angel of Jehovah went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and eighty-five thousand. And when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead bodies.
35その夜、主の使が出て、アッスリヤの陣営で十八万五千人を撃ち殺した。人々が朝早く起きて見ると、彼らは皆、死体となっていた。
36And Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and abode at Nineveh.
36アッスリヤの王セナケリブは立ち去り、帰って行ってニネベにいたが、その神ニスロクの神殿で礼拝していた時、その子アデランメレクとシャレゼルが、つるぎをもって彼を殺し、ともにアララテの地へ逃げて行った。そこでその子エサルハドンが代って王となった。
37And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer [his sons] smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.
37その神ニスロクの神殿で礼拝していた時、その子アデランメレクとシャレゼルが、つるぎをもって彼を殺し、ともにアララテの地へ逃げて行った。そこでその子エサルハドンが代って王となった。
