¹And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,

¹時に主の言葉がわたしに臨んだ、

²Son of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable unto the house of Israel,

²「人の子よ、イスラエルの家になぞをかけ、たとえを語って、

³and say, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: A great eagle with great wings, long-pinioned, full of feathers, which was of divers colours, came unto Lebanon, and took the highest branch of the cedar.

³言え。主なる神がこう言われる、さまざまの色の羽毛を多く持ち、大きな翼と、長い羽根とを持つ大わしがレバノンに来て、香柏のこずえにとまり、

⁴He cropped off the top of its young shoots, and carried it into a merchants' land; he set it in a city of traders.

⁴その若枝の頂を摘み切り、これを商業の地に運び、商人の町に置いた。

⁵And he took of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful field; he placed it by great waters, he set it as a willow tree.

⁵またその地の種をとって、これを肥えた土に植えた。すなわち水の多い所にもって行って、柳を植えるようにこれを植えた。

⁶And it grew, and became a spreading vine of low stature, so that its branches should turn toward him, and the roots thereof be under him; and it became a vine, and brought forth branches, and shot forth sprigs.

⁶これが成長して、たけ低く、はびこるぶどうの木となり、枝はわしに向かい、根はわしの下にあり、こうしてついにぶどうの木となり、枝を伸ばし、葉を出した。

⁷And there was another great eagle with great wings and many feathers; and behold, from the beds of her plantation, this vine did bend her roots unto him, and shot forth her branches toward him, that he might water it.

⁷ここにまた大きな翼と、羽毛の多いほかの一羽の大わしがあった。見よ、このぶどうの木は、潤いを得るために、その根をわしに向かってまげ、その枝をわしに向かって伸ばした。

⁸It was planted in a good field by many waters, that it might bring forth branches and bear fruit, that it might be a noble vine.

⁸これが枝を出し、実を結び、みごとなぶどうの木となるために、わしはこれを植えた苗床から水の多い良い地に移し植えた。

⁹Say, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Shall it prosper? Shall he not pull up its roots, and cut off its fruit, that it may wither? All its fresh sprouting leaves shall wither, even without a great arm and many people to pluck it up by its roots.

⁹あなたは、主なる神がこう言われると言え、これは栄えるであろうか。わしはその根を抜き、その枝を切り、その若葉を皆枯らさないであろうか。これをその根からあげるには、強い腕や多くの民を必要としない。

¹⁰And behold, being planted, shall it prosper? shall it not utterly wither when the east wind toucheth it? It shall wither in the beds where it grew.

¹⁰見よ、それが移し植えられたら、また栄えるであろうか。東風がこれを打つ時、それは枯れてしまわないであろうか。その育った苗床で枯れないであろうか」。

¹¹And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,

¹¹主の言葉がまたわたしに臨んだ、

¹²Say now to the rebellious house, Know ye not what these things are? Say, Behold, the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, and took its king and its princes, and led them with him to Babylon.

¹²「反逆の家に言え。これらがなんであるかをあなたがたは知らないのか。彼らに言え、見よ、バビロンの王がエルサレムにきて、その王とつかさとを捕え、これをバビロンに引いて行った。

¹³And he took of the king's seed, and made a covenant with him, and brought him under an oath, and he took away the mighty of the land;

¹³また王の子孫のひとりを捕えて、これと契約を結び、誓いを立てさせ、また国のおもだった人々を捕えて行った。

¹⁴that the kingdom might be abased, that it might not lift itself up, that it might keep his covenant in order to stand.

¹⁴これはこの国を卑しくして、みずから立つことができないようにし、その契約を守ることによって立たせるためである。

¹⁵But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and much people. Shall he prosper? shall he escape that doeth such things? shall he break the covenant, and yet escape?

¹⁵しかし彼はバビロンの王にそむき、使者をエジプトに送って、馬と多くの兵とをそこから獲ようとした。彼は成功するだろうか。このようなことをなす者は、のがれることができようか。

¹⁶[As] I live, saith the Lord Jehovah, verily in the place of the king that made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he broke, even with him, in the midst of Babylon, shall he die.

¹⁶契約を破ってなおのがれることができようか。主なる神は言われる、わたしは生きている、必ず彼は自分を王となした王の住む所、彼が立てた誓いを軽んじ、その契約を破った相手の王のいるバビロンで彼は死ぬ。

¹⁷Neither shall Pharaoh with a mighty army and a great assemblage do anything for him in the war, when they cast up mounds and build forts to cut off many persons.

¹⁷多くの命を断つために塁を築き、雲梯を建てるとき、パロは決して大いなる軍勢と、多くの人とをもって、彼を助けて戦いをしない。

¹⁸He despised the oath, and broke the covenant; and behold, he had given his hand, yet hath he done all these things: he shall not escape.

¹⁸彼は誓いを軽んじ、契約を破り、その手を与えて誓いながら、なおこれらの事をしたゆえ、のがれることはできない。

¹⁹Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: [As] I live, verily, mine oath which he hath despised, and my covenant which he hath broken, even it will I recompense upon his head.

¹⁹それゆえ、主なる神はこう言われる、わたしは生きている、彼がわたしの誓いを軽んじ、わたしの契約を破ったことを、必ず彼のこうべに報いる。

²⁰And I will spread my net upon him, and he shall be taken in my snare; and I will bring him to Babylon, and will enter into judgment with him there for his unfaithfulness in which he hath been unfaithful against me.

²⁰わたしはわが網を彼の上に打ちかけ、彼をわがわなに捕えて、バビロンに引いて行き、彼がわたしにむかって犯した反逆のために、その所で彼をさばく。

²¹And all his fugitives with all his bands shall fall by the sword, and they that remain shall be scattered toward every wind; and ye shall know that I Jehovah have spoken.

²¹彼のすべての軍隊のえり抜きの兵士は皆つるぎに倒れ、生き残った者は八方に散らされる。そしてあなたがたは主なるわたしが、これを語ったことを知るようになる」。

²²Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: I will also take of the highest branch of the lofty cedar, and will set it; I will crop off from the top of its young shoots a tender one, and I will plant it upon a high and eminent mountain:

²²主なる神はこう言われる、「わたしはまた香柏の高いこずえから小枝をとって、これを植え、その若芽の頂から柔かい芽を摘みとり、これを高いすぐれた山に植える。

²³upon the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it; and it shall bring forth branches, and bear fruit, and become a noble cedar; and under it shall dwell all birds of every wing; in the shadow of the branches thereof shall they dwell.

²³わたしはイスラエルの高い山にこれを植える。これは枝を出し、実を結び、みごとな香柏となり、その下にもろもろの種類の獣が住み、その枝の陰に各種の鳥が巣をつくる。そして野のすべての木は、主なるわたしが高い木を低くし、低い木を高くし、緑の木を枯らし、枯れ木を緑にすることを知るようになる。主であるわたしはこれを語り、これをするのである」。

²⁴And all the trees of the field shall know that I Jehovah have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and made the dry tree to flourish: I Jehovah have spoken, and will do [it].

²⁴そして野のすべての木は、主なるわたしが高い木を低くし、低い木を高くし、緑の木を枯らし、枯れ木を緑にすることを知るようになる。主であるわたしはこれを語り、これをするのである」。
