1And Abraham was old, [and] advanced in age; and Jehovah had blessed Abraham in all things.
1アブラハムは年が進んで老人となった。主はすべての事にアブラハムを恵まれた。
2And Abraham said to his servant, the eldest of his house, who ruled over all that he had, Put thy hand, I pray thee, under my thigh,
2さてアブラハムは所有のすべてを管理させていた家の年長のしもべに言った、「あなたの手をわたしのももの下に入れなさい。
3and I will make thee swear by Jehovah, the God of the heavens and the God of the earth, that thou take not a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am dwelling;
3わたしはあなたに天地の神、主をさして誓わせる。あなたはわたしが今一緒に住んでいるカナンびとのうちから、娘をわたしの子の妻にめとってはならない。
4but thou shalt go to my land and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Isaac.
4あなたはわたしの国へ行き、親族の所へ行って、わたしの子イサクのために妻をめとらなければならない」。
5And the servant said to him, Perhaps the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land: must I, then, bring thy son again in any case to the land from which thou hast removed?
5しもべは彼に言った、「もしその女がわたしについてこの地に来ることを好まない時は、わたしはあなたの子をあなたの出身地に連れ帰るべきでしょうか」。
6And Abraham said to him, Beware that thou bring not my son thither again.
6アブラハムは彼に言った、「わたしの子は決して向こうへ連れ帰ってはならない。
7Jehovah the God of the heavens, who took me out of my father's house, and out of the land of my nativity, and who has spoken to me, and who has sworn to me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land -- he will send his angel before thee, that thou mayest take a wife for my son thence.
7天の神、主はわたしを父の家、親族の地から導き出してわたしに語り、わたしに誓って、おまえの子孫にこの地を与えると言われた。主は、み使をあなたの前につかわされるであろう。あなたはあそこからわたしの子に妻をめとらねばならない。
8And if the woman be not willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be quit of this my oath: only, bring not my son thither again.
8けれどもその女があなたについて来ることを好まないなら、あなたはこの誓いを解かれる。ただわたしの子を向こうへ連れ帰ってはならない」。
9And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore unto him concerning that matter.
9そこでしもべは手を主人アブラハムのももの下に入れ、この事について彼に誓った。
10And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; now all the treasure of his master was under his hand; and he arose and went to Aram-naharaim, to the city of Nahor.
10しもべは主人のらくだのうちから十頭のらくだを取って出かけた。すなわち主人のさまざまの良い物を携え、立ってアラム・ナハライムにむかい、ナホルの町へ行った。
11And he made the camels kneel down outside the city by a well of water, at the time of the evening, when the women came out to draw [water].
11彼はらくだを町の外の、水の井戸のそばに伏させた。時は夕暮で、女たちが水をくみに出る時刻であった。
12And he said, Jehovah, God of my master Abraham, meet me, I pray thee, [with thy blessing] this day, and deal kindly with my master Abraham.
12彼は言った、「主人アブラハムの神、主よ、どうか、きょう、わたしにしあわせを授け、主人アブラハムに恵みを施してください。
13Behold, I stand [here] by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water.
13わたしは泉のそばに立っています。町の人々の娘たちが水をくみに出てきたとき、
14And let it come to pass, [that] the maiden to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink, and who will say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also, be she whom thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and hereby I shall know that thou hast dealt kindly with my master.
14娘に向かって『お願いです、あなたの水がめを傾けてわたしに飲ませてください』と言い、娘が答えて、『お飲みください。あなたのらくだにも飲ませましょう』と言ったなら、その者こそ、あなたがしもべイサクのために定められた者ということにしてください。わたしはこれによって、あなたがわたしの主人に恵みを施されることを知りましょう」。
15And it came to pass before he had ended speaking, that behold, Rebecca came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother; and [she had] her pitcher upon her shoulder.
15彼がまだ言い終らないうちに、アブラハムの兄弟ナホルの妻ミルカの子ベトエルの娘リベカが、水がめを肩に載せて出てきた。
16And the maiden was very fair in countenance; a virgin, and no man had known her. And she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.
16その娘は非常に美しく、男を知らぬ処女であった。彼女が泉に降りて、水がめを満たし、上がってきた時、
17And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, sip a little water out of thy pitcher.
17しもべは走り寄って、彼女に会って言った、「お願いです。あなたの水がめの水を少し飲ませてください」。
18And she said, Drink, my lord! And she hasted and let down her pitcher on her hand, and gave him to drink.
18すると彼女は「わが主よ、お飲みください」と言って、急いで水がめを自分の手に取りおろして彼に飲ませた。
19And when she had given him enough to drink, she said, I will draw [water] for thy camels also, until they have drunk enough.
19飲ませ終って、彼女は言った、「あなたのらくだもみな飲み終るまで、わたしは水をくみましょう」。
20And she hasted and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again to the well to draw [water]; and she drew for all his camels.
20彼女は急いでかめの水を水ぶねにあけ、再び水をくみに井戸に走って行って、すべてのらくだのために水をくんだ。
21And the man was astonished at her, remaining silent, to know whether Jehovah had made his journey prosperous or not.
21その間その人は主が彼の旅の祝福されるか、どうかを知ろうと、黙って彼女を見つめていた。
22And it came to pass when the camels had drunk enough, that the man took a gold ring, of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands, ten [shekels] weight of gold,
22らくだが飲み終ったとき、その人は重さ半シケルの金の鼻輪一つと、重さ十シケルの金の腕輪二つを取って、
23and said, Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee. Is there room [in] thy father's house for us to lodge?
23言った、「あなたはだれの娘か、わたしに話してください。あなたの父の家にわたしどもの泊まる場所がありましょうか」。
24And she said to him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.
24彼女は彼に言った、「わたしはナホルの妻ミルカの子ベトエルの娘です」。
25And she said to him, There is straw, and also much provender with us; also room to lodge.
25また彼に言った、「わたしどもには、わらも、飼葉もたくさんあります。また泊まる場所もあります」。
26And the man stooped, and bowed down before Jehovah,
26その人は頭を下げ、主を拝して、
27and said, Blessed be Jehovah, God of my master Abraham, who has not withdrawn his loving-kindness and his faithfulness from my master; I being in the way, Jehovah has led me to the house of my master's brethren.
27言った、「主人アブラハムの神、主はほむべきかな。主はわたしの主人にいつくしみと、まこととを惜しまれなかった。そして主は旅にあるわたしを主人の兄弟の家に導かれた」。
28And the maiden ran and told these things to her mother's house.
28娘は走って行って、母の家のものにこれらの事を告げた。
29And Rebecca had a brother, named Laban; and Laban ran out to the man, to the well.
29リベカにひとりの兄があって、名をラバンといった。ラバンは泉のそばにいるその人の所へ走って行った。
30And it came to pass when he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister's hand, and when he heard the words of Rebecca his sister, saying, Thus spoke the man to me -- that he came to the man, and behold, he was standing by the camels, by the well.
30彼は鼻輪と妹の手にある腕輪とを見、また妹リベカが「その人はわたしにこう言った」というのを聞いて、その人の所へ行ってみると、その人は泉のほとりで、らくだのそばに立っていた。
31And he said, Come in, blessed of Jehovah! why standest thou outside? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.
31そこでその人に言った、「主に祝福された人よ、おはいりください。なぜ外に立っておられますか。わたしは家を準備し、らくだのためにも場所を準備しておきました」。
32And the man came into the house; and he ungirded the camels, and gave the camels straw and provender, and water to wash his feet, and the feet of the men who were with him.
32その人は家にはいった。ラバンはらくだの荷を解いて、わらと飼葉をらくだに与え、また水を与えてその人の足と、その従者たちの足を洗わせた。
33And there was set [meat] before him to eat; but he said, I will not eat until I have made known my business. And he said, Speak on.
33そして彼の前に食物を供えたが、彼は言った、「わたしは用向きを話すまでは食べません」。ラバンは言った、「お話しください」。
34And he said, I am Abraham's servant.
34そこで彼は言った、「わたしはアブラハムのしもべです。
35And Jehovah has blessed my master greatly, and he is become great; and he has given him sheep and cattle, and silver and gold, and bondmen and bondwomen, and camels and asses.
35主はわたしの主人を大いに祝福して、大いなる者とされました。主はまた彼に羊、牛、銀、金、男女の奴隷、らくだ、ろばを与えられました。
36And Sarah, my master's wife, bore a son to my master after she had grown old; and unto him has he given all that he has.
36主人の妻サラは年老いてから、主人に男の子を産みました。主人はその所有を皆これに与えました。
37And my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanite, in whose land I am dwelling;
37ところで主人はわたしに誓わせて言いました、『わたしの住んでいる地のカナンびとの娘を、わたしの子の妻にめとってはならない。
38but thou shalt by all means go to my father's house and to my family, and take a wife for my son.
38おまえはわたしの父の家、親族の所へ行って、わたしの子に妻をめとらなければならない』。
39And I said to my master, Perhaps the woman will not follow me?
39わたしは主人に言いました、『もしその女がわたしについてこない時はどういたしましょうか』。
40And he said to me, Jehovah, before whom I have walked, will send his angel with thee, and prosper thy way, that thou mayest take a wife for my son of my family, and out of my father's house.
40主人はわたしに言いました、『わたしの仕えている主は、み使をおまえと一緒につかわして、おまえの旅にさいわいを与えられるであろう。おまえはわたしの親族、わたしの父の家からわたしの子に妻をめとらなければならない。
41Then shalt thou be quit of my oath, when thou shalt have come to my family. And if they give thee not [one], thou shalt be quit of my oath.
41そのとき、おまえはわたしにした誓いから解かれるであろう。またおまえがわたしの親族に行く時、彼らがおまえにその娘を与えないなら、おまえはわたしにした誓いから解かれるであろう』。
42And I came this day to the well, and said, Jehovah, God of my master Abraham, if now thou wilt prosper my way on which I go,
42わたしはきょう、泉のところにきて言いました、『主人アブラハムの神、主よ、どうか今わたしのゆく道にさいわいを与えてください。
43behold, I stand by the well of water, and let it come to pass that the damsel who cometh forth to draw [water], and to whom I shall say, Give me, I pray thee, a little water out of thy pitcher to drink,
43わたしはこの泉のそばに立っていますが、水をくみに出てくる娘に向かって、「お願いです。あなたの水がめの水を少し飲ませてください」と言い、
44and she shall say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels -- that she should be the woman whom Jehovah hath appointed for my master's son.
44「お飲みください。あなたのらくだのためにも、くみましょう」とわたしに言うなら、その娘こそ、主がわたしの主人の子のために定められた女ということにしてください』。
45Before I ended speaking in my heart, behold, Rebecca came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder, and went down to the well, and drew [water]; and I said to her, Give me, I pray thee, to drink.
45わたしが心のうちでそう言い終らないうちに、リベカが水がめを肩に載せて出てきて、水をくみに泉に降りたので、わたしは『お願いです、飲ませてください』と言いますと、
46And she hasted and let down her pitcher from her [shoulder], and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also. And I drank; and she gave the camels drink also.
46彼女は急いで水がめを肩からおろし、『お飲みください。わたしはあなたのらくだにも飲ませましょう』と言いました。それでわたしは飲みましたが、彼女はらくだにも飲ませました。
47And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bore to him. And I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her hands.
47わたしは彼女に尋ねて、『あなたはだれの娘ですか』と言いますと、『ナホルとその妻ミルカの子ベトエルの娘です』と答えました。そこでわたしは彼女の鼻に鼻輪をつけ、手に腕輪をつけました。
48And I stooped, and bowed down before Jehovah; and I blessed Jehovah, God of my master Abraham, who has led me the right way to take my master's brother's daughter for his son.
48そしてわたしは頭をさげて主を拝し、主人アブラハムの神、主をほめたたえました。主は主人の兄弟の娘を子にめとらせようと、わたしを正しい道に導かれたからです。
49And now, if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me; and I will turn to the right hand or to the left.
49あなたがたが、もしわたしの主人にいつくしみと、まことを尽そうと思われるなら、そうとわたしにお話しください。そうでなければ、そうでないとお話しください。それによってわたしは右か左に決めましょう」。
50And Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceeds from Jehovah: we cannot speak to thee bad or good.
50ラバンとベトエルは答えて言った、「この事は主から出たことですから、わたしどもはあなたによしあしを言うことができません。
51Behold, Rebecca is before thee: take [her], and go away; and let her be wife of thy master's son, as Jehovah has said.
51リベカがここにおりますから連れて行って、主が言われたように、あなたの主人の子の妻にしてください」。
52And it came to pass, when Abraham's servant heard their words, that he bowed down to the earth before Jehovah.
52アブラハムのしもべは彼らの言葉を聞いて、地に伏し、主を拝した。
53And the servant brought forth silver articles, and gold articles, and clothing, and he gave [them] to Rebecca; and he gave to her brother, and to her mother, precious things.
53そしてしもべは銀の飾りと、金の飾り、および衣服を取り出してリベカに与え、その兄と母とにも価の高い品々を与えた。
54And they ate and drank, he and the men that were with him, and lodged. And they rose up in the morning; and he said, Send me away to my master.
54彼と従者たちは飲み食いして宿ったが、あくる朝彼らが起きた時、しもべは言った、「わたしを主人のもとに帰らせてください」。
55And her brother and her mother said, Let the maiden abide with us [some] days, or [say] ten; after that she shall go.
55リベカの兄と母とは言った、「娘は数日、少なくとも十日、わたしどもと共にいて、それから行かせましょう」。
56And he said to them, Do not hinder me, seeing Jehovah has prospered my way: send me away, and I will go to my master.
56しもべは彼らに言った、「主はわたしの道にさいわいを与えられましたから、わたしを引きとめずに、主人のもとに帰らせてください」。
57And they said, Let us call the maiden and inquire at her mouth.
57彼らは言った、「娘を呼んで聞いてみましょう」。
58And they called Rebecca and said to her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go.
58彼らはリベカを呼んで言った、「あなたはこの人と一緒に行きますか」。彼女は言った、「行きます」。
59And they sent away Rebecca their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men.
59そこで彼らは妹リベカと、そのうばと、アブラハムのしもべと、その従者とを送り去らせた。
60And they blessed Rebecca, and said to her, Thou art our sister; mayest thou become thousands of tens of thousands; and may thy seed possess the gate of their enemies!
60彼らはリベカを祝福して彼女に言った、「妹よ、あなたは、ちよろずの人の母となれ。あなたの子孫はその敵の門を打ち取れ」。
61And Rebecca arose, and her maids, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man. And the servant took Rebecca, and went away.
61リベカは立って侍女たちと共にらくだに乗り、その人に従って行った。しもべはリベカを連れて立ち去った。
62And Isaac had just returned from Beer-lahai-roi; for he was dwelling in the south country.
62さてイサクはベエル・ラハイ・ロイからきて、ネゲブの地に住んでいた。
63And Isaac had gone out to meditate in the fields toward the beginning of evening. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, camels were coming.
63イサクは夕暮、野に出て歩いていたが、目をあげて、らくだの来るのを見た。
64And Rebecca lifted up her eyes and saw Isaac, and she sprang off the camel.
64リベカは目をあげてイサクを見、らくだからおりて、
65And she had said to the servant, Who is the man that is walking in the fields to meet us? And the servant said, That is my master! Then she took the veil, and covered herself.
65しもべに言った、「わたしたちに向かって、野を歩いて来るあの人はだれでしょう」。しもべは言った、「あれはわたしの主人です」。するとリベカは、被衣で身をおおった。
66And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done.
66しもべは自分がしたことのすべてをイサクに話した。イサクはリベカを天幕に連れて行き、リベカをめとって妻とし、彼女を愛した。こうしてイサクは母の死後、慰めを得た。
67And Isaac led her into his mother Sarah's tent; and he took Rebecca, and she became his wife, and he loved her. And Isaac was comforted after [the death of] his mother.
67イサクはリベカを天幕に連れて行き、リベカをめとって妻とし、彼女を愛した。こうしてイサクは母の死後、慰めを得た。
