¹And Jehovah spoke to Joshua, saying,

¹そこで主はヨシュアに言われた、

²Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Appoint for yourselves the cities of refuge, whereof I spoke unto you through Moses,

²「イスラエルの人々に言いなさい、『先にわたしがモーセによって言っておいた、のがれの町を選び定め、

³that the slayer who unwittingly without intent smiteth any one mortally may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.

³あやまって、知らずに人を殺した者を、そこへのがれさせなさい。これはあなたがたが、あだを討つ者をさけて、のがれる場所となるでしょう。

⁴And he shall flee unto one of those cities and stand at the entrance of the city-gate, and shall declare his matter in the ears of the elders of that city; and they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.

⁴その人は、これらの町の一つにのがれて行って、町の門の入口に立ち、その町の長老たちに、そのわけを述べなければならない。そうすれば、彼らはその人を町に受け入れて、場所を与え、共に住ませるであろう。

⁵And if the avenger of blood pursue after him, they shall not deliver the slayer up into his hand; for he smote his neighbour unwittingly, and hated him not previously.

⁵たとい、あだを討つ者が追ってきても、人を殺したその者を、その手に渡してはならない。彼はあやまって隣人を殺したのであって、もとからそれを憎んでいたのではないからである。

⁶And he shall dwell in that city, until he have stood before the assembly in judgment, until the death of the high-priest that shall be in those days; then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.

⁶その人は、会衆の前に立って、さばきを受けるまで、あるいはその時の大祭司が死ぬまで、その町に住まなければならない。そして後、彼は自分の町、自分の家に帰って行って、逃げ出してきたその町に住むことができる』」。

⁷And they hallowed Kedesh in Galilee in the hill-country of Naphtali, and Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and Kirjath-Arba, that is, Hebron, in the hill-country of Judah.

⁷そこで、ナフタリの山地にあるガリラヤのケデシ、エフライムの山地にあるシケム、およびユダの山地にあるキリアテ・アルバすなわちヘブロンを、これがために選び分かち、

⁸And beyond the Jordan from Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness, in the plateau, out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan of the tribe of Manasseh.

⁸またヨルダンの向こう側、エリコの東の方では、ルベンの部族のうちから、高原の荒野にあるベゼル、ガドの部族のうちから、ギレアデのラモテ、マナセの部族のうちから、バシャンのゴランを選び定めた。これらは、イスラエルのすべての人々、およびそのうちに寄留する他国人のために設けられた町々であって、すべて、あやまって人を殺した者を、そこにのがれさせ、会衆の前に立たないうちに、あだを討つ者の手にかかって死ぬことのないようにするためである。

⁹These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that whosoever smiteth any one mortally without intent might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the assembly.

⁹これらは、イスラエルのすべての人々、およびそのうちに寄留する他国人のために設けられた町々であって、すべて、あやまって人を殺した者を、そこにのがれさせ、会衆の前に立たないうちに、あだを討つ者の手にかかって死ぬことのないようにするためである。
