1And it came to pass when all the kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, who were by the sea, heard that Jehovah had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel, until they had passed over, that their heart melted, and there was no spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.
1ヨルダンの向こう側、すなわち西の方におるアモリびとの王たちと、海べにおるカナンびとの王たちとは皆、主がイスラエルの人々の前で、ヨルダンの水を干しからして、彼らを渡らせられたと聞いて、イスラエルの人々のゆえに、心は消え、彼らのうちに、もはや元気もなくなった。
2At that time Jehovah said to Joshua, Make thee stone-knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.
2その時、主はヨシュアに言われた、「火打石の小刀を造り、重ねてまたイスラエルの人々に割礼を行いなさい」。
3And Joshua made him stone-knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of Araloth.
3そこでヨシュアは火打石の小刀を造り、陽皮の丘で、イスラエルの人々に割礼を行った。
4And this is the cause why Joshua circumcised [them]: all the people that had come out of Egypt, the males, all the men of war, had died in the wilderness on the way, after they came out of Egypt.
4ヨシュアが人々に割礼を行った理由はこうである。エジプトから出てきた民のうちの、すべての男子、すなわち、いくさびとたちは皆、エジプトを出た後、途中、荒野で死んだが、
5For all the people that came out were circumcised; but all the people that were born in the wilderness on the way, after they came out of Egypt, [them] had they not circumcised.
5その出てきた民は皆、割礼を受けた者であった。しかし、エジプトを出た後に、途中、荒野で生まれた民は、みな割礼を受けていなかった。
6For the children of Israel had walked forty years in the wilderness, till the whole nation of men of war had perished who had come out of Egypt, who had not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah; to whom Jehovah had sworn that he would not show them the land which Jehovah had sworn unto their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
6イスラエルの人々は四十年の間、荒野を歩いていて、そのエジプトから出てきた民、すなわち、いくさびとたちは、みな死に絶えた。これは彼らが主の声に聞き従わなかったので、主は彼らの先祖たちに誓って、われわれに与えると仰せられた地、乳と蜜の流れる地を、彼らに見させないと誓われたからである。
7And their sons [whom] he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised, for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them on the way.
7ヨシュアが割礼を行ったのは、この人々についで起されたその子どもたちであった。彼らは途中で割礼を受けていなかったので、無割礼の者であったからである。
8And it came to pass when the whole nation had finished being circumcised, that they abode in their place in the camp, till they were whole.
8すべての民に割礼を行うことが終ったので、民は宿営のうちの自分の所にとどまって傷の直るのを待った。
9And Jehovah said to Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. And the name of the place was called Gilgal to this day.
9その時、主はヨシュアに言われた、「きょう、わたしはエジプトのはずかしめを、あなたがたからころがし去った」。それでその所の名は、今日までギルガルと呼ばれている。
10And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and held the passover on the fourteenth day of the month, at even, in the plains of Jericho.
10イスラエルの人々はギルガルに宿営していたが、その月の十四日の夕暮、エリコの平野で過越の祭を行った。
11And they ate of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened loaves, and roasted [corn] on that same day.
11そして過越の祭の翌日、その地の穀物、すなわち種入れぬパンおよびいり麦を、その日に食べたが、
12And the manna ceased on the morrow, when they had eaten of the old corn of the land; and there was no more manna for the children of Israel; and they ate of the produce of the land of Canaan that year.
12その地の穀物を食べた翌日から、マナの降ることはやみ、イスラエルの人々は、もはやマナを獲なかった。その年はカナンの地の産物を食べた。
13And it came to pass when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, there stood a man before him with his sword drawn in his hand. And Joshua went to him, and said to him: Art thou for us, or for our enemies?
13ヨシュアがエリコの近くにいたとき、目を上げて見ると、ひとりの人が抜き身のつるぎを手に持ち、こちらに向かって立っていたので、ヨシュアはその人のところへ行って言った、「あなたはわれわれを助けるのですか。それともわれわれの敵を助けるのですか」。
14And he said, No; for [as] captain of the army of Jehovah am I now come. Then Joshua fell upon his face to the earth, and worshipped, and said to him, What saith my lord unto his servant?
14彼は言った、「いや、わたしは主の軍勢の将として今きたのだ」。ヨシュアは地にひれ伏し拝して言った、「わが主は何をしもべに告げようとされるのですか」。すると主の軍勢の将はヨシュアに言った、「あなたの足のくつを脱ぎなさい。あなたが立っている所は聖なる所である」。ヨシュアはそのようにした。
15And the captain of Jehovah's army said to Joshua, Loose thy sandal from off thy foot: for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.
15すると主の軍勢の将はヨシュアに言った、「あなたの足のくつを脱ぎなさい。あなたが立っている所は聖なる所である」。ヨシュアはそのようにした。
